Cox boosts speed to 5 Mbps down/2 Mbps up, 15/2 for premier!

I heard these numbers from a Cox employee tonight and sure enough when I got home the speeds had increased. Right now I'm actually testing closer to 6mbps down, and exactly 1mbps up. [edit: now getting 2Mbps up. 235k/sec sustained, not bad at all] The upstream jump is awesome. Definitely a big improvement over 4mbps/512kbps

The 15/2 premier service is a great stab at Verizon's fiber service. Competition with FIOS is very good. I'm pretty sure we're the only Cox market with this kind of bandwidth.

I should say that none of this is confirmed final as it hasn't shown up on Cox's webpage http://www.cox.com/fairfax/highspeedinternet/default.asp yet. I've also heard rumors that it's 5/2 instead of 5/1 but I'm definitely not seeing that kind of bandwidth right now. [edit: the new upstream speed is 2Mbps. Cox must have phased in the upstream increase in two parts]

You can test your speed with:
dslreports.com
testmy.net
this flash tester I put on Cox's webserver
or you can just download a big file

Post your speeds and location!

Yeah it's official: http://www.cox.com/fairfax/pressreleases.asp (press release).
The PR says 2Mbps upstream, but I'm not seeing it. But if the PR says it, it has to be true, right? Or at least they have to make it come true now or else it's false advertising, maybe? Whatever, 2Mbps up would be freaking sweet. Hopefully my Cox friend was wrong about the new upsteram only being 1Mbps.

Well, when it was advertized at 4 I was only getting 3.2 max. Maybe now I'll get 4 but who knows... they must be fucking around with something because over Friday and Saturday my connection was really flakey.

My internet was dead late night into lunchtime today. It's up now, and I guess it seems faster.

This is great news. I've been a very happy cox internet customer for the last 3 years or so. A lot of people have always worried about cable becoming slower and more saturated, but I think Cox has done a great job of keeping up with demand and staying ahead of the curve by periodically increasing the speed.

All I know is that I was uploading at 180KBps last night. I don't know if it was a fluke, but yay! nonetheless.

You have to use a DOCSIS 1.1 compatible modem to see the new speed upgrades (that means not the POS Toshiba PCX 1000 that came with your service 4 years ago).

kbps/8 = kBps. So 2Mbps down means a theoretical maximum of 250k/sec. Probably 235k/sec max with overhead.

My speed still sucks. I live off of Olley Lane which is off of braddock and Main St.(236). I need to bitch at Cox. My upload speed is good, but I dont care much about that.

Cox is pretty inconsistent, I admit, check out my stats over here in cville:

Down:
Your connection is: 5745 Kbps (about 5.7 Mbps)
You downloaded at: 701 kB/s
Your TRuSPEED: ^info^ 6147 Kbps :: 750 kB/s (7% overhead factored)
Bottom Line: You are running: 103 times faster than 56K and can download 1 megabyte in 1.46 second(s)
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 78.25 % faster than the average for host (cox.net)

Up:
Your connection is: 1049 Kbps (about 1 Mbps)
You uploaded at: 128 kB/s
Your TRuSPEED: ^info^ 1122 Kbps :: 137 kB/s (7% overhead factored)
Bottom Line: You are running: 19 times faster than 56K and can upload 1 megabyte in 8 second(s)
Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 166.24 % faster than the average for host (cox.net)

It just gets better the smaller the chunk size I set, I guess living around a bunch of internet-hating foreigners has perks...

heh... they will claim that my speed is due to the fact that cable internet is a shared resource. This is pure bullshit. I have never gone above 1.5Mbs at any time of the day, ever. I'm connected all the damn time. Fuckers.

My connection is still dropping occasionally and I haven't seen better speeds. I'm wondering if my area was one affected by Verizon's alleged clipping and poor patching of lines that Cox is suing them over.

I'm starting to see the same thing. When I was living in Herndon, I had no problems with speeds. Now that I moved down to Centreville, I get the speed every so often. Usually I am seeing 5-6 megs during the evening and at 3am I am getting finally the 15mb.. It's getting a bit upsetting. If they don't work out the issues, I'm going to FIOS.

Why is it that Fairfax city doesn't have Fios yet?!?! This is such crap. Anyways, I'd consider getting the premier service from Cox if they didn't want to rape me just to get it installed in my house. I want to put the cable in my office where there is no cable connection and they want me to bend over and open wide just so they can install a service that I'll pay them money for each month...freaking idiots. At least with Verizon it's free. I have no incentive to go out and pay money for something I can get for free later on.

Why not just use wifi? Don't buy into the crap about it being unsecure. Then you can have your computer wherever the fuck you want.

then don't use WEP, genius

that's why I said "don't buy into the crap", because ignorants think it's the only thing around for wifisec.

In the Enterprise Use a RADIUS server and 802.1x to rotate keys and you can use WPA-PSK. In a household you can just NOT use passphrase generation and use long keylengths.

and if that site was not so fucking annoying I'd stick around to find INFO EVERYONE ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT CRACKING WIFI. But I bet you feel like you know something special.
