Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Old school buildings are cool and I’m glad some of these are still standing. I wish more, if not all were saved. The historical significance in craftsmanship and materials alone would have been worth the keep, I think.

That is a trash chute that allows trash to be directly fed to the furnace for disposal.

A fire escape to the basement of the building? Are you a fucking idiot?
That's a fire escape. I remember seeing them on an old school back in the 70s. I think it was a 1950's solution for a fire escape, and eventually they were all taken down, but I know a school that still had them in the mid 70s (not around Fairfax).
It's an escape chute for fire safety, which were common in the early 20th century. Designed to get people OUTSIDE of the building, not like trash which could just go down the regular interior chutes.
^^^ That's a common error among those who learned (sort of) from hearing words instead of seeing them. Meanwhile "Schools of Yesteryear" runs pretty regularly on FCPS Red Apple 21. Or you can find the episodes on YouTube.
