JEWEelry, I know plenty of broke people who spend thousands on engagement rings. I don't see the appeal of having a $20k rolex either. If you must wear a watch, you can get a seiko style rolex for a few hundred bucks, and it will keep better time.

Exactly. So jealous. Lease it and get a new car every three years.

Cars, no question. Nothing depreciates like them, and the carry costs are ridiculous for an asset that doesn't appreciate. The ride-sharing economy will really free up a lot of consumer capital, especially when it goes autonomous in ten or twenty years.

You really think there are hundreds of thousands of people involved in our current space program? No f'ing way.

As others have stated, luxury vehicles are the biggest waste of money anyone could spend. Warren Buffett has never spent more than 50k on a vehicle. The winklevoss twins drive rav-4’s, anyone with any sense doesn’t waste money on a depreciating asset like an automobile. I suppose if you have piles of cash laying around you can afford to splurge, but I suspect 8/10 users of this board do not have that kind of money. Buy used and invest the rest.

Says the moron who is writing this on a computer or phone using a network, both of which were created using technology advanced by the space program.
Or did you think technology just evolved by natural selection?

Please - so I guess every technology that wasn't a byproduct of the space industry doesn't exist?
As the other person pointed out, there's very little utility to space besides what we've already developed. We will never live on the moon or Mars or any other planet (it's a biology problem, not an engineering one; we are not built to live in low gravity environments), and we will never travel beyond our own solar system through conventional propulsion as it's practiced by the space industry, NASA, like so many other government agencies, is largely a make-work program that has been flailing about, desperately trying to justify it's own existence by pushing false narratives like "climate change" and other politics.
No, let the private sector (which includes the defense industry) do whatever low-orbit stuff is worth doing and which can be done at a profit. This "pay nerds to play around with rockets" nonsense is just giant boondoggle that we can't afford.

Who said that? Not I.

Missing the point, you are.

At this point, that seems to be the likeliest path. Still doesn't refute my point.

What was your point? The fallacy that, if we didn't have a space race, we wouldn't have any technological advancement? That the only way to develop technology was to do it in furtherance of a space program?
Are you one of those government agency welfare queens? You sound like one of those government agency welfare queens.

No, but the rate of technological advancement was accelerated by the requirements of building spacecraft in an era of 8-bit computers.

Piss off, sonny. Your ignorance is equaled only by your inability to sling a decent insult.

Triggered boomer is triggered. Sorry, gramps, but the world would have still turned without your pointless space program. You know how we know it was pointless? Because we stopped going - everyone knew there wasn't a point. Now enjoy that government pension I'm paying for.

I wonder what Little Rocket Man thinks.

You don't make enough to pay federal income taxes.

I'm including the percentage of the population who do not work in the space industry but are enablers/cheerleaders who insist, despite the lack of any evidence, that all manner of amazing and life-changing research is being accomplished. Can ants live in zero-gravity? Let's spend eighty billion dollars to find out!

The USA has been WAAAAY underfunding research of all sorts. Waiting until for-profit people come along to look into things is a major reason why we are losing so much ground internationally. Remember bans on stem cells? Just plain stupid.

What's he doing that has already been done? Does he have a moon shot program? Do you ever make a cogent point?
Like I said, government welfare recipient, enjoy that pension.

This is true. We have let so-called basic research languish in a big way. The corporate world has no interest unless the bean-counters can see dollar signs just ahead. Advantage China.
