It is a man made lake that was created by damming the Barcroft River back in the 1890's. Early dairy farmers needed a reliable water source for their dairy cattle, so Lake Barcroft was created.
The dam also controlled the yearly flooding of the Barcroft River, but we did lose the fantastic Class 5 rapids that were in the upper branches of the river.

"Lake Barcroft came into being in 1915. An increasing need for water by the City of Alexandria led the Alexandria Water Company to build the dam and establish a reservoir to store the waters from the branches of Holmes Run. The North Branch of Holmes Run is now called Tripps Run.
Dam construction was begun in 1913 under contract with the Piedmont Construction Company. Specifications for the Barcroft Dam were severe and the construction was massive. The structure is of cyclopean masonry and concrete. The foundation is laid upon bed rock. A railway was built to transport the masonry stones to the dam site. The contractor went broke completing the job."

Lake Barcroft was originally created as a reservoir for the Alexandria Water Company, which constructed a dam impounding the Tripps and Holmes Run near the old Barcroft Mill starting in 1913.
In 1950, with the completion of its first dam on the Occoquan River imminent, Alexandria Water put the reservoir and the surrounding property up for sale. It was purchased and developed into the Lake Barcroft neighborhood.
Lake Barcroft is the deadliest body of water in Fairfax County, with at least 12 people having drowned in the lake since 1953.

Not true. Mountain Lake is man-made. It was made to power a grist mill in a nearby settlement. Construction began on the dam on the Mountain river in 1734. It was completed in 1736 with the loss of only four souls.
Lake Drummond was created in 1936 by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Drummond river was dammed to create a source of heavy water for Project Pisces. That project remains classified to this day.
