He is a good guy but unfortunately the "wrong" guy for the type of job that requires using a firearm. He didn't have it in him to put his life on the line for others. There are people like this out there. If you take a job that requires the use of a firearm you better know 100% that you would put your life on the line.

Nothing is going to change anyway. There will be another mass shooting before the year is over. The only 100% guarantee in life is death.

A gun is to be used for SELF DEFENSE only. The cop was not under attack so he had no obligation to risk his life to someone with superior firepower without backup.

I don't think anyone would sign up to be a police officer if they were told they must risk their own life to save someone. A cop is not going to charge into a building like Bruce Willis in Die Hard.

I am not sure of the exact situation but if the deputy was outgunned and did not know where the shooter was, he may have done the right thing by not walking blindly into a spot where he would be picked off immediately.

He may or may not be a coward.

When a municipality suspends someone without pay it means the process of firing them with cause is under way. Look at Scott Peterson and convince me he is anything but a washed up cop placed in the school system because he was completely dysfunctional in the field.

According to Broward County protocols, the "armed guard" had been trained to confront an active shooter and oppose with direct fire of his own. I was a Houston police officer for 43 years. After the Columbine shooting, the HPD ran active shooting trainings. This was in 2000. Back then, the protocol was, "Establish a perimeter, open communications with the gunman(men), nobody goes in and wait for SWAT."

On my first time through the training when we stood outside the building with the gunman, I could hear him shooting his weapon. My presumption was he was killing people. I told my fellow officers I was going in to try and stop the gunman. After locating the gunman, he shot me in the leg...AFTER I drilled him in the throat.

For many years afterwards, my actions were used as an example of what NOT to do. But, in reality, I was a man before my time.

Nine years later, I was contacted again by the HPD and told my way was now the way...

Rushing an active shooter is not even really about taking him out. Most active shooters when they observe a threat with a gun will stop murdering innocent, unarmed people and turn their gun on the threat. Depending on the situation, this time where the gunman is engaged with an opposing shooter might provide enough of an opportunity for the innocent people to get away.

The problem with this career...is that you never know what someone is going to do under live fire, until they are under live fire. All the training in the world is no substitute for one incident of live fire. And anybody who tells you that they aren't scared in a combat environment is either a lunatic psychopath or a PTSD zombie. The definition of bravery is being afraid and pushing ahead to do your job, regardless of the personal consequences to you.

Great post, and you're exactly right - the first response is to draw and return fire so the shooter has to change targets from unarmed innocents to armed response. When you trained, were you using simunitions?

If Florida is the same as most jurisdictions if you are fired you lose your pension, you normally get back your contributions and that is all.

exactly why willing and trained teachers with firearms would completely change these scenarios

the teachers themselves are under attack + often holed up in some room

imagine the shooter entering a room full of kids + an armed teacher, the teacher would just have to fire in the direction of the shooter and they would move on

now multiply that to 10-20 teachers - crazy coward shooters would avoid schools because there are armed people inside

really simple common sense

and before someone says "but the kids could get the teachers gun and kill people" - wrong! the teachers gun will be locked up safely

remember - shooters starts, school goes on lockdown - students gather wherever they are supposed to in the rooms - a teachers unlocks the gun (1 minute?) and readies for anyone who breaks through the locked classroom door

students would WANT to be in the classes with the teachers that have the guns and are trained

the teachers are not going to be asked to go find the shooter, just defend their area

and for anyone who will say "the teacher could shoot the police or vice versa, coming into the classroom" - wrong!

the communication in modern day is way too advanced for the police and teachers to not know when the situation is over

it may be 4 hours before the all clear is communicated, but living children will walk out of these classrooms

and for the "what about between classes when the kids are in the halls?"
- that is why they have drills, every kid would run to the nearest classroom as they went on lockdown

for the "but the cops might shoot the teacher thinking they are the shooter" - wrong! the teachers are not going to be roaming the halls, like in a movie, tracking down the shooter(s)
