This is a conservative estimate. Since these kids are mostly ESL learners, the actual cost is much higher."

Unaccompanied minors are a drop in the bucket. If they all disappeared tomorrow, with vigorous monitoring we'd be lucky to save enough to cut the tax rate by one cent. More likely any savings would be frittered away. The tsunami is the combination of immigrants, special needs kids and others on F&RL. Throw in underperforming kids and you'd have 40% of the school population that is consuming close to 60% of the school resources. For this investment we are getting a damn poor return.

Federal law imposes some restrictions what we can and can't do with these groups. Even with these restrictions we ought to be able to reorganize how programs are offered so that we can receive better results and save a few dollars as well.

Bill, we've always had special needs kids, etc. 4220 is not a drop in the bucket, look at the cost to educate each child. Most of these are probably special needs. They probably require instruction in spanish, costing us more than the average.

The post I copied says it amounts to $62,316,740. That would be their budget shortfall in Fairfax.

Let us face the facts. You have it, they want it, and you will have to pay it.

This entire area of FFX has gone down the sh-t can. Just look at who takes walks up and down your street, the DMV, bus stops, just to name a few. If you can, best to move out of this pool of dung.

What is relatively new to an area that was traditionally known as a middle class bedroom community for government workers is having 29% of the student body population on free & reduced lunch, 14% receiving special ed services and 29% receiving language services (FCPS supplied numbers). Even if you assume considerable overlap between these groups, and if you add in kids who don't fall within those groups but who are underperforming, it is reasonable to assume that we are looking at 40% of the student population of over 180,000 students falling into one or more of those four catagories. We are heading full speed into a demographic disaster, the quality of education our kids are getting is declining, the status of Fairfax County Schools is declining, and you are worried about 4,000 students.

Unaccompanied minors is a divisive issue. You want to fight under that banner in this area, the Karen Keyes Gamarras will win. Improving educational quality and getting our money's worth from our educational dollars is a uniting issue.

I am sick of paying for all these illegal aliens. Our schools need so many resources because of them. It is time to centralize them into a few facilities and consolidate resources. So much money could be saved.

Yet we have major pushes to eliminate sports and activities which are a whopping 1% of the budget.

My school is overcrowded yet the ESL students have small classes. Why don’t all the students get small sized classrooms?

I never thought about centralizing ESL students but if it is good enough for the gifted, it makes a whole lot of sense! So much money could be saved.

The money they earn is exported to other countries, which is a net loss to our American economy, as dollars illegals earn in Fairfax are spent to buy goods and services in El Salvador, pumping up the economy of El Salvador.
