Dallas wants NRA to go elsewhere

As the pushback against guns spreads and spreads, officials in Dallas have asked the NRA to cancel its scheduled May convention there, noting that anti-gun rallies and demonstrations would disrupt the city and its budget.

They might lose some one-time money, but in the long-run, it's the right thing to do.

The NRA should stick to towns like Hicksburg and East Dustbowl -- places where the guntards are.

The NRA is crumbling. I think it's days are numbered.

Yeah. Still not buying the flack you're capable of independent thought. You're just not wired for it.

The first time I heard that was back in the mid 70's but they're still around.

The NRA today is a different organization than it was in the 70's. Before 1977 the NRA was an apolitical organization of gun enthusiasts that played only a limited role in the gun control debate. The NRA we know today was the result of a takeover of the organization in 1977 by militant gun advocates which was known as the Cincinnati Revolution, and which turned the NRA into the cash cow lobbying organization it is today.

So, you're telling us the NRA today is not the same one in the 1970s, but it is the result of a takeover in 1977. You do know that 1977 was in the 1970s, don't you?

More tax dollars for Fairfax when it relocates to the Dulles Expo Center. We can funnel those extra tax dollars to teachers salaries

You probably think everything changed overnight. 1980 was the first year that the NRA endorsed a presidential candidate, and in 1980 the NRA only spent around $1.5 million on all campaigns combined, including an anti-Ted Kennedy campaign. Even in 1980 a large portion of the NRA membership had joined because the NRA had a program that allowed members to acquire certain weapons at a discount.

The NRA claims membership on the order of 3M. That's pretty tiny. Yet they've bought so many politicians that they make policy. Something wrong there...

Not surprised at this. From Ralph Yarborough, to Sam Rayburn, to Lyndon Johnson, to Lloyd Bentsen, Texas is a historically blue state. Just like Virginia is.

Nobody should spend their money where it isn't welcome. That includes the NRA.

Try five million, snowflake, and they all vote and pay dues every year. The REAL reason you progressives want to get rid of guns has absolutely nothing to do with a sincere concern about public safety and EVERYTHING to do with destroying the NRA. The NRA is the single most effective lobbying group in America, and it represents 5% of every Presidential election tally. There is no such thing as "Big Gun" - gun makers are relatively small companies with revenues that don't come close to the technocrats that fund the DNC. The NRA is a legitimate political movement made of 5 million REAL people, not technocrat billionaires, and they all feel so strongly about their rights that they are willing to pay $35 a year in dues to defend them.

The NRA isn't a faceless organization, it is the political will of five million Americans, and THAT is why you progressives hate it so much. The NRA routinely kicks the shit out of the progressive media political machine, and you will do anything - including dragging around the dead bodies of children or making kids skip school a repeat talking points - to destroy it.

Your backward mind not surprisingly has it backwards True part. Progressives don't see gun control as a way to break the NRA's power. The NRA sees aligning with those who oppose the progressive agenda as a way to enhance its own power. There is a large amount of money to be obtained from those who oppose progressive agendas in this country, and the NRA has seen by aligning itself with right wing politics it can access that money.

Whoa, somebody was triggered! Get a grip, sonny. 3M, 5M -- the point is, it's a tiny minority, yet wields an inordinate amount of power. Remember, we're supposed to be a *democracy*. So if 5M folks are dictating policy, that would seem...what's the word? un-democratic! Yeah, that's it.

In fact, your observation that it's effective at lobbying is exactly the point I was making. Yet you're so oversensitive that you had to froth at the mouth *when agreeing with me*.

Really, you might consider talking to someone about that massive chip on your shoulder.

It's not a "tiny minority," retard, it's five million people. That's 5% of the total votes casted in the last presidential election. There are very few organizations that represent that many people. So, it's in fact very democratic that so many politically-motivated people - not astroturfed shaved-headed dyke kids, real, live people who aren't being paid by Bloomberg to skip school - are working to make sure their Constitutionally-gurnateed rights are protected.

5% is a tiny minority. See, if it's less than 50%, it's a minority. And not all 5M even vote (for a certainty). So...your "logic" is, again, not present.
