Didn't DC United figure that putting the Screaming Eagles in charge of mentoring kids was a bad idea?
Posted by: Turn your head and Goff ()

I understand putting Barra Brava and District Ultras on ice, if DC United doesn't disassociate from the more unruly and uncontrollable supporters groups when moving into the new stadium when would they ever make the break. I also understand the team making the Screaming Eagles the official fan club for distributing supporter section tickets and charity work. SE are easier to work with, they won't openly defy team wishes and rules, they won't embarrass the team with songs that don't belong in the new stadium,(and they had no issue making a deal at the expense of the other groups).

But the big red flag is having the Screaming Eagles pair up with young fans with the bizarre mandate of teaching the kids how to root for the team. Matching up a bunch of single guys with local at risk kids is a disaster waiting to happen. Really makes me question the motivations of the decision making powers in the team office.

Screw the DCU front office, their ownership , and the screaming eagles. I’ve supported this clubs through everything since 1996. Season tickets from 03-10 with Barra Barvva. This is how you treat them? Despicable. You should be ashamed of yourselves and the Scraming Eagles and their leadership should be to! Well you can kiss my support goodbye.

This is embarrassing. I keep telling myself "wait and see, this may work out after all" but I'm getting closer and closer to just chucking my Screaming Eagles jersey in the trash. What's lost in all this is that Ben Olsen and the players aren't at fault for this at all, and we need to keep supporting them as we always have. I'm just gonna do so from the comfort of my living room from now on.

The excitement is palpable as the energy builds towards Audi Field judging by the positive responses and yes, a few brickbats from some quarters, to our Valentine's Day partnership announcement.

While all of the details are still being worked out, the Academy will be an integral piece of our partnership with nonprofit DC SCORES and with D.C. United. DC SCORES provides kids in need in Washington, D.C. with after-school soccer programs, teaches them how to write and perform poetry and spoken-word pieces, and teaches them how to research and address community service projects in their own neighborhoods.

The Supporters’ Academy concept is being closely developed in conjunction with DC SCORES, and is intended to bring DC SCORES kids cost-free to attend United matches. We believe that by bringing kids to United matches regularly and bringing them into our community, we can encourage them to become lifelong supporters of D.C. United and have a positive impact on their lives. We are excited to share our passion and love for the game and the team with them, and in turn discover the unique ways they will support United.

Chico was the man, but it's a new stadium and time to move on. Chico will always be remembered by the old time fans from RFK days. For the new kids coming to Audi Field there needs to be new traditions.

The escalating personal attacks on individual members of the Screaming Eagles need to stop now. These have been directed at dedicated supporters and volunteers who have done nothing to warrant such baseless attacks on their characters. Threats of violence, even ones indirectly implied, have no place in United supporters' culture and we will not tolerate those who make them. Such attacks, even the ones defended as only jokes, only drive supporters farther apart. Substantive concerns and questions should be directed to the Screaming Eagles board or to your own club leadership, should you be a member of another group.

Seriously, though, this infighting needs to stop before the new stadium opens. When you have a single supporters area for all the groups, they’re going to have to figure out how to deal with each other. Like it or not, they’re going to be sitting in the same area of Audi Field, and sooner or later they need to stop squabbling or things could get ugly.

The Screaming Eagles won't last, they're done. They're going to be sitting between two groups who hate them and who will be taunting them the entire game. It won't be any fun so they'll quit and abandon the supporters section.

Our partnership with D.C. United ensures all supporters can access single-match tickets in the Audi Field supporters’ section. But that section will not be “our section” any more than it could be any one group’s section–it is your section, our section, everyone’s section.

Let’s talk. We have scheduled a meeting open to all supporters this Saturday 4/7, 12:30–2 pm, at the Northeast Public Library, 330 7th Street NE, with SE President to answer questions about the partnership & discuss the formation of an independent supporters council.

As stated in our FAQ, we support the formation of an independent council to formalize collaboration between all supporters on section conduct & activities. We believe it should be structured to ensure broad-based support across all SGs for decision-making for the section. We believe council initiatives should have broad support, with the caveat that there should be no compromise on bans on racism, sexism, homo/transphobia, intimidation, or violence. We believe these expectations are noncontroversial & shared by all D.C. SGs.

Regarding the supporters’ section itself, we are committed to being part of a section with as much freedom for supporters as possible. We also support full transparency regarding MLS and United’s speech & conduct rules and consequences for violations. The move of supporters from sideline sections at RFK, located in front of more casual fans, to a separate endline section at Audi Field can & should open up greater freedom for all supporters to show their passion for D.C. United & create an electric, imposing atmosphere.

We remain committed to pursuing partnership with both La Barra Brava and District Ultras. Talks have been held with leadership from each group on multiple occasions and, moving forward, our door is open at any time to more talks regarding collaboration on the section. The birth of the Audi Field supporters section was never going to be easy, and compromise is going to be required by all sides as supporters come together in one section at AF. We recognize that our communication of the details of the partnership added to that strain.

So we commit to keeping all supporters informed & will provide regular updates on all supporter section issues going forward. In return, as we provide openness & pursue cross-group partnership, we ask that our members & volunteers be treated w/respect during this process. We want to be part of a matchday atmosphere at Audi Field that includes a unified community of D.C. supporters, one creating a home field advantage unlike any other for our players on the field. Please join us 4/7 & help us build a bridge to each other & towards that goal.

Leadership of the Screaming Eagles knows that there is a repeat offender in their group and has done nothing about it tells me that they value the illusion of “All Welcome All United” over the safety of the women in their group.

Leadership is brushing incidents under the rug…Not confronting and banning men from the section for abusive and harassing behavior...

What good does waving a pink and rainbow flag and yelling “ALL WELCOME” do if there are no actions to back it up? Empty words and empty promises.

SE members are ready to branch off and get back to the basics of drinking beer and cheering for the team. All they need is a name.

At long last! After many months of searching high and low to find the right venue, we are delighted to announce our tailgate location for the 2018 D.C. United season: The Matthew Henson Earth Conservation Center! This fantastic spot, just two blocks from Audi Field, is run by the Earth Conservation Corps (ECC). The ECC is a nonprofit youth development and environmental service organization that has been part of our new neighborhood for over 26 years, and we are thrilled to be working with them. For more about the ECC, check out our website.

A rotating selection of beers and cider will be available, and for those who don't drink alcohol, water and soda will be on hand. Current SE members drink for free.

Non-SE members are also welcome to enjoy our beverages with the purchase of a tailgate pass. In a departure from our previous Lot 8 tradition, the Screaming Eagles will no longer be preparing our own food.

However, food trucks will be present to make sure you don't go hungry, and you're always welcome to bring your own tailgate setup. Plus, you might want to save some space to sample the offerings Chef Jose Andres and his team are cooking up for Audi Field!

Parking is not available at the Henson Center, but it is easy walking distance from two metro stops: Waterfront-SEU and Navy Yard. It is also accessible via bus (#74). The address is 2000 Half Street SW.

The Henson Center is a terrific venue, one we believe will offer our members the festive and friendly tailgate atmosphere the Screaming Eagles are known for. Large indoor spaces, as well as outdoor decks and walkways, provide beautiful views of the Anacostia River. A grassy area in front provides plenty of space for outdoor activities.

Best of all, the Henson Center is home to beautiful, amazing birds of prey, and SE members can visit them! Want to meet an owl or an osprey? Now's your chance (under the supervision of the ECC staff, of course).

Screaming Eagles tailgates are open to all D.C. United fans, regardless of membership status. We're excited to provide a pre-game venue for all fans to enjoy. Even if you're not an SE member, you're welcome to join the party! However, we hope you'll consider purchasing a membership, as having a current SE membership does confer a number of benefits, and the more, the merrier! If you're interested in helping out at our tailgates, you can contact us via Facebook, or via email at tailgates@screaming-eagles.com.

We'll see you July 14th!

A bunch of us non-leadership folks put together a FB group open to all, designed to be a collaborative space for sharing ideas on how to make everyone's shared exp the best it can be. Pls consider signing up. We understand why people are pissed and we have concerns too. This group is designed to help foster collaboration and give people a place to discuss and volunteer to assist with game-day activities at Audi Field, including tifo.

Again. This is open to anyone and everyone. As blazindw said on FB, we're doing this as a Field Team and quite frankly without support from the board. We were tired of them standing around waiting to reach out and we have taken the initiative. In the end, we're all there for the guys on the field. They deserve the support, the atmosphere, and that's the approach we personally are taking. It's not about the SEs, DU, BB or any other group. It's about all of us supporting our team.

If you're not interested, I respect that. Do you. We're just doing what we can to try and help and decided to stop waiting around for something to happen. If folks are mad and have made up their mind, that's cool. maybe some folks will see this and want to help. if that happens, i'll take whatever. people trying and helping is cool stuff.

It's *way* late, but maybe we can make something happen. We're just trying to be positive and keep it moving.

Supporters' March
July 14, 2018 @ Canal Park to Audi Field

Years ago DC United Supporters and Fans marched united in support of a new stadium for DC United. Everyone was promised a #StadiumForAll, but on July 14, when Audi Field opens many of those these same Supporters' have been intentionally excluded by DC United, as it refuses to treat all fans equally and sell tickets to all Supporter's Groups. Audi Field is not a #StadiumForAll it is a #StadiumForTheFew.

For years La Barra Brava and District Ultras dedicated themselves to supporting the team and the DC United Community on and off the field. Now we call upon our members, all Supporters and all fans of DC United to stand with us as we fight for a #StadiumForAll. Bring your drums, flags, signs and voices. Join us for the March, whether you are attending the match or not. Make a difference.

Event Details

3:00 Event officially begins at Finn McCool's 713 8th Street SE, Washington, DC 20003

5:00 Free shuttle bus begins to run from Finn McCool's to Canal Park.

6:30 Last shuttle from Finn McCool's to Canal Park (the shuttle will run from Finn McCool's to Audit Field after 6:45)

6:45 March from Canal Park to Audi Field (about .9 miles)

8:00 Kickoff (prior to kickoff shuttle bus will transport anyone not attending the match back to Finn McCool's, including flags and drums, where the match will be on the TVs with sound.)

Good Morning. Yesterday D.C. United messaged the Founder and President of the Barra, offering North end tickets on the same terms as their other supporters, and offered website and/or box office assistance to help set members up.

Hopefully this helps towards some resolution

This back of the bus offer is not a resolution.

(There will be no Puta chants)

The last offer from DC United was an insult. Those of us going are going to spend the whole game fucking with the Screaming Chickens.

I'm one of those people convinced that the BB leadership overplayed their hand and are now being deliberately misleading about the specifics of their negotiations in order to save face.

District Ultras are thugs and Barra Brava are price gougers I will never share a stand with “fellow” supporters like that.

Oh, and we heard about the plan to disrupt the march from the Conservation Center to Audi Field. The cops have been informed, so might as well call that off.

Funny that the Screaming Eagles were the only supporters club to not come out against the FloSports deal, almost like they had a secret arrangement ahead of time. But that would be out of character for them, right?

Two questions for the SE: 1) is the Lot 8 Life profile a one time thing or is this going to be a weekly deal with FloSports? 2) Are the SE leadership subjects being profiled or are they paid hosts on the show?

Once again when DCU takes an action that has a negative impact on the fan base the SE leadership already has a deal in place to profit from that action.

DC United is working with the embassy of Qatar to bring a taste of their culture to Audi Field. United season ticket members will enjoy entertainment from indentured guest workers falling to their deaths, a flogging will be provided with each beer serving, female fans will receive a half serving of food, gays will be stoned, and there will be a kids zone.

It's a rainy Thursday and I've been thinking about this for a few weeks, so I think it's time we discussed the first anniversary of the Strategic Partnership.

Here's a post about soccer supporter culture and how a hobby can become a blood feud.

In the fall of 2017, we were saying goodbye to RFK, us lunatics who love DC United. The crowds were starting to enlarge to give the old girl her proper respects. I still miss her today. Rusty, cavernous, oversized for our needs, but those STANDS. Those beautiful stands.

In one of those final games, I was approached by a member of the Screaming Eagles. I'm a District Ultra, and we tended to fraternize quietly; we all support the same team, after all, and we'd worked on quite a few combined efforts for travel and tifo. They were fine. I liked 'em.

He knew I liked organizing charitable works. He asked how I'd feel about doing it on a larger scale. How large? Stand by, he said. Keep it under your hat.

I should've known something stupid was about to happen.

At the same time, negotiations for the new stadium between the team and the supporters were ongoing. Where would we stand? How much would it cost? What would we call it? Everyone had an idea, everyone had an opinion. But suddenly all the meetings were canceled.

Why?

The SE executive board, who are the sort of "democratically elected" kind that basically can only vote for themselves, had struck a deal with the team. Nobody would be able to purchase single tickets into the new section...except through them.

In the middle of Valentine's Day, a new order had been announced. Instead of three diverse, vibrant groups, only one would be recognized. "The Screaming Eagles," the press release read, "will take the lead role to manage all aspects of the supporter culture."

So, about that.

As we said, SE were only one of three groups at the time. La Barra Brava, the original, the famous, the proud, the alcohol-soaked mob. The District Ultras, a breakaway group, the smaller, the more intense, the more unruly, the anarchy to SE's order.

Can you imagine groups of immigrants, outcasts, lunatics and others would take an announcement that they were suddenly under the wing of a group they knew but didn't follow, led by a man that nearly no one knew?

Yes, let's talk about James for a minute.

James, the newly-minted president of SE, was suddenly the focus of an entire community. Thousands of people who were very concerned, and very, very angry. He's a nice enough guy. Loves his kids. Loves his group. Honestly believed he'd saved the scene.

He wasn't ready for us.

Imagine having no social media presence in a moment when everyone suddenly wants to kick your ass. Without even having a Twitter account, he managed to violate the prime directive - "Every day on here, there is a main character, and it is your job to never be it."

Tag. Yer it.

After days of demanding answers from our friends, who claimed (and, in nearly every case, had) no knowledge of what on earth had just transpired, James emerged. There would be a Q&A session on a Tuesday afternoon at a brewery in Lorton, which is highly-on-brand for SE.

Days of silence, the man with the account tried to laugh the outrage and hatred off as "brickbats being thrown our way."

As you can imagine, that phrase spawned merchandise for months.

So, being the enterprising lad I was, and having a short day on site (the benefits of the gig economy!), I went to Lorton. I went to that brewery. And I brought a brick from my front porch. Props are very important when you have a point to make.

Thing is, if you know me, you know I'm not a violent man, and I had no intention of being a violent man that day either. Nor did I become a violent man that day. It's important to have fun, after all.

But, and this is an important part of this story, they didn't know me.

Because what's the point of a community? It's to know each other and tend to their needs when things are rough. It's about keeping the peace in times of anger. If you don't know the people you're working with, you can't lead. It's a paradox - the best leaders follow.

So when a dude shows up in a t-shirt, tactical pants, work boots and a brick, sits himself down at a table and folds his hands like he's waiting for a date, you do one of two things - you ask what the fuck, or you start squirming and debate calling law enforcement.

Nobody talked to me except James. James isn't stupid. This is important. We disagree, but I don't think he's stupid. He didn't know me, but he knew what I represented. "You brought a brick to the bar, so you must want to talk to me," he said with a smile and a handshake.

"I do."

We got to know each other for the next 90 minutes. I'll always grant him that. In the following months, when people would start dodging phone calls and pretending we weren't as friendly as we thought, he engaged.

That's good politics.

Didn't save him from bad policy.

We found out how he got a deal none of us could get for our people - he spent SE's money on a ton of season tickets, none of which were refundable, on the bet that he could sell them on. I'll be honest - I don't know if he was right, and I don't know if he turned a profit.

But he went for it. He decided a deal that saved his own group would be better than a top-down, FO enforcement of supporter culture. Srdan, the nominal leader of the Ultras (read: it's his charge account), laughed at that notion. "I'd like to see them try," he said with a grin.

So a funny thing happened along the way - Barra and the Ultras were suddenly talking. We were the outgroups now. And we agreed - if you won't work with us to help our guys go see a game in our loud, raucous way, we'd travel to aways and boycott at home.

Here's the fun part.

What's the point of following a soccer team? Love, of course. I've told stories of what this stupid culture of ours gave me. An extended family, the love of my life, and a thing to focus on besides work. These are vital. DCU Therapy is real, and our therapist just fucked us.

And who you are and where you come from shouldn't dictate the terms. Football is for everyone, yeah? Anyone can kick a ball. It's the great leveler. Except in America. In America, it's gentrified and pay-for-play and priced for the bourgeois. That's like NINE other threads.

In RFK, for 21 years, our way was almost a black market. You went to the parking lot with food and drink. You shared. You mingled. You broke bread. Then you got a ticket from someone at SE's table, BB's van, or DU's tree. Then we would go to our places in the expanse and IGNITE.

Now, the only way in was to have a season ticket (which not everyone could afford), or to purchase a ticket from the very people who had politicked their way to the access. That wasn't ever going to fly.

You've brought petty politics to the therapy session. People remember that.

Suddenly, we were doing away trips for the first time as ourselves. The Ultras had always caucused with SE for that in the past; they had the infrastructure and past practice down, so we went along to get along. Clearly that won't work now.

Who's going to get tickets?

Me, obv.

Nobody else in DU had time, energy or interest. I don't really have time myself. At that point, I was buying a home, doing 50hrs a week at CBS News, organizing for my union, and it was to the point where people knew if I could make time for you, it mattered. It was important.

I was mad. The guy who had asked if I was interested in expanding charity was actually offering me a seat at their table, at the expense of my friends. I remember when you fuck people like that. You were hurting my friends and offering me favors to soothe the move.

Motivation.

Srdan asked if I was willing to do this year in and year out. I absolutely was. It's a chance to give back to people who, years and years ago when I was still counting my sobriety in days and didn't know where I belonged, told me I was one of them and took me in.

(A sidenote here: I originally was Barra Brava, and left when I sobered up. No disrespect to any of them; I just didn't know how to hang out with them without a drink in hand at that point, so I wandered into the group with straight-edge tendencies. Changing your life is messy.)

So I started with Columbus. It was too late for Orlando and Atlanta, so that would be our first stand. And that was the first shot. I cold-called them on a lunch break during AIPAC, asking about supporter group sales.

The reply I received was startling.

I wondered if the whole league had been directed to route away tickets through SE. Now I had someone claiming it. This particular salesman is no longer with Columbus, but followed the previous owner to Austin, and I think that tells me all I need to know about him in retrospect.

This was all three weeks in. But now I was on fire. I was calling the league. I was calling every team in it. I was bound and determined to find out why the money of my friends and allies wasn't any good to them.

This was now an MLS problem.

So here's the thing: as much as I treat this as a song about love, we all know that soccer is a business, and the teams in MLS exist to make money. That's the point. We're not stupid. But as happens so often, business people forget that the cells in their spreadsheets have souls.

Once you make it a soul problem, people get active. And, well, you know, you pissed off a trained organizer. Maybe don't do that. Organizers know how to tap into anger and make it action. So we acted.

The next day, we had ticket access for Columbus, and the rest of the aways.

I'll always treasure the phone call i got from that guy in SE, the one who offered me a chance to abandon my friends in exchange for photo-op activism. The barely-contained rage in his voice as he chided me for "going nuclear" without checking with him first.

I believe in nukes.

That road trip proved the love was still there - we all went hard, loved our team despite getting destroyed 3-1, and if it had stayed there, it would have been lovely.

If only it had. If only the drunk dude hadn't invaded personal space and made my friend uncomfortable.

Do I think he was setting out to harass her? No. In fact, he had been drunk and angsty enough to make a lot of us angry. He wanted to talk about the troubles while we were in the stadium. I didn't drive to Central Ohio and skip a gig for politics; I'm here for United. Fuggoff.

So he kept going from Ultra to Ultra, looking for someone who would engage him. He didn't MEANT to do the Ben Shapiro DEBATE MEEEEE thing. But he totally did. And so he cornered the girl. The blogger. The vocal critic. And she wasn't here for it either. But he insisted.

He wasn't a small man. Much like myself, he probably wouldn't hurt anyone. But we didn't know him like that. Just like me with a brick, if you don't know what you look like, you're gonna cause a scene. And the scene I saw was intimidation, however inadvertent. A friend agreed.

Dear friends, I have never in my life, until that day, had to ask a woman "Is This Man Bothering You?" In my shitty youth, it wouldn't have occurred to me. But now I'd dragged a lot of people into a road trip. I have a duty of care.

Fuck me. I'm the adult in the room.

So we separated him from her, and we flanked her for the rest of the night, and we all danced and sang for our soccer team, as we do. But the damage was done. And now SHE was mad. And she was going to investigate. She asked other female supporters if this was a thing.

It was.

Without naming names (or beards) - it's her investigation, not mine - she found the culture not just in DC, but nationwide. In USMNT circles. Names came out that broke my heart, because they were friends. (Justin Fairfax's revelations are just another in a long line of shitty men I liked.)

At this point, battle lines were drawn. SE felt under siege; they'd been accused of harassment, systemic racism, and general PTAness. DU's rank and file were being shitheads about it. BB were their normal belligerent selves, chucking their empties at the Eagles. And most folks just wanted to watch the fucking game.

Because I don't know how many paragraphs I'm into this at this point but let's be honest with ourselves. This is supposed to be a pastime, right? This is a break from the troubles of work and home and all that. And suddenly now I'm a travel agent and she's on that #MeToo and WHAT?

Why on earth does this matter? Just buy a ticket, right? Just go to the game and sit in your seat and watch. Just do it like other sports. You weirdos who can't just WATCH the game, who have to be a PART of it. Look how self important you must be.

And you know what? Yeah we are.

Like I said. Therapy. Like I've said before. Family. Like anyone who's been in the trenches - community, shared burden, shared joy, shared grief. We all cried for Chico and we all registered as bone marrow donors for Big Rob and we all donated to #kuykenstrong.

We've been there for each other, because we got together in common cause, however silly. No sillier than fez hats and go karts in a parade. No sillier than a fancy hat and a mint julep. No sillier than the fish fry after church. Of course it's nothing. Of course it's everything.

When you fuck up the family, there's gonna be ugliness. Of course there is. But you have to fix the family. And fix it we did. We marched on the stadium, then left it silent for the opener. I got That Phone Call in July. We came home. We were there. There's three symbols in there. The eagle shield of SE. The DC Punk laurel of DU. The skull and crossbones of BB. We were there, all of us, for the magic. And it didn't matter who we were aligned with that day. We hugged everyone and made OMG faces together.

Did it all get resolved in the end? No. We merely got access. SE rank and file still feel hard done by; I don't blame them. There's hard feelings that remain. People I liked won't be in the Chico Stand next year, because their leaders tried to make it the Eagles Nest.

We still aren't one cohesive group. BB and DU are still learning how to coexist in one space. SE have mostly retreated to the edges. At least one person has stated they're afraid of getting hurt.

And my friend? She doesn't come out to games much anymore. We all know why.

Next season is almost upon us. We'll get to start again. We're planning our work, as we do. Maybe we'll do well. Maybe we won't. But our family will be there, and I welcome anyone who wants to be a part of it. There's good people in it. And the bad?

Well.

We'll handle it.

If you're planning to be loud, be loud with me, with us. If you need a pal, I'll be your pal. If you need help, I'll come help. If you don't fuck anyone over, you're my friend. I'm easy like that.

Because we do this for love, right?

Of course we do.

It'd be stupid otherwise.

Soccer is the fastest rising sport in America. Look at all the fields in this county. Look at the TV ratings. Football is collapsing, baseball is for old men, basketball is too urban, and hockey is a Canadian thing. In ten years soccer will be #1.

I feel like the team culture is lacking in the DC. Our chants aren’t anything special, every team in the MLS uses the vamos! vamos! insert team name here chant, and we’ve been using it as our main chant for forever now. Don’t get me wrong, I think the chant is good, but we’re at the point where we’re overusing it as well as some other chants. Our club has been around since the beginning, more than 20 years now. We’ve had plenty of time to come up with new and creative chants to separate ourselves from other teams. And here we are, still singing the same 3 songs and borrowing another from Iceland.

I see teams such as Portland and become envious of them and what their supporters are capable of. They sing creative and unique songs(not to mention the anthem as well), they paint huge banners, and they chop a log with a chainsaw during their matches. But most importantly they take pride in being a timber.

I want to take pride in being a part of United. I believe that if we supporters can collaborate, we can separate ourselves from the bland and boring and create a fun and unique identity for ourselves. Make new and creative chants, paint banners that stretch over the entire stadium, do things that separate us from the pack. In doing this I believe that we’ll create an identity for ourselves, an identity that people will take pride in being a part of.
