At least two students have died and 19 others were injured after a 15-year-old male student opened fire on his classmates at a Kentucky high school.
Police said the shooting erupted at Marshall County High School in Benton on Tuesday just before 8am when the teenager walked in armed with a handgun.
A 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 15-year-old male student later died in hospital from his injuries.
At least 14 people were taken to hospital, some via helicopter, suffering gunshot wounds. Another five were also injured but were not shot. All of the victims are believed to be students.
Police were seen leading a teenager away in handcuffs after he was apprehended by a Marshall County Sheriff's Deputy roughly 15 minutes after the shooting broke out.
He has not been named but will be charged with murder and attempted murder.
Nearly 100 children ran out of the school seeking safety when the shots rang out. The shooting is believed to have taken place in a commons room before classes began.
The school was placed in lock down and the entrances to the school were blocked off by first responders.
A half-dozen ambulances and numerous police cars converged on the school. Officers in black fatigues carrying assault rifles showed up as well.
Cars lined up on both sides of an adjacent road as parents desperately tried to find their children.
Two of the victims were taken to Nashville, Tennessee's Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
A student inside the school tweeted just after 8am that multiple people had been injured.
'Pray for Marshall County High School, I am a student there and we just had a school shooter, multiple students injured, please pray for us,' she wrote.
High school students were being bused to North Marshall Middle School so they could be safely picked up by their parents.
