Libertarians while extremely idealistic and I do agree with many of their ideals, cannot be functionally pragmatic in today's society on a lot of issues.
Education and winning others over to the Libertarian point of view is necessary for any chance of having L Candidates win a marginal number of political offices.
If a state were to succeed and form its' own nation, then Libertarianism could work, but there is too much standing in the way for it to work nationwide or even within a single locale today.
Their are different types of Libertarians. I for one, would not use drugs which are currently illegal if they were legalized.
I also, draw the line at abortion. Ron Paul is correct. The most defenseless creature lives in the womb of a pregnant woman. Therefore the most terrible assault is one directed toward that creature.
About foreign policy, I believe in intervening when commerce is disrupted.
Policing the world, is too expensive.
Empowering nations which are being destroyed or oppressed OK, but mostly they should learn to fend for themselves.
Right now Russia and China are slowly raising their actions of imperialism, in small steps. Russia on land, with neighboring countries and China too, but mostly at sea with island building and weaponizing their fishing vessels.
Their encroachment and aggression towards commercial ships and US military ships is essentially an act of War, which we are tip toeing around and treating very carefully.
The conventional US first doctrine of having an enormous military and Naval presence is 2nd to a policy of a non-intervention, however the former may be the only viable choice in our age to deter aggression from nations whose aim is to expand by way of force.
