Which are worse: Teachers or Real Estate Agents?

Both are over-paid, both failed at everything else in life and ended up in their professions as a last resort, both do little actual work.

Computer programmers are worse than both. It is no longer the 1970s. You are nothing special. Computer science majors are flooding the market and many high school grads have the necessary skills to do computer programming work.

But you still have to be SMART to get CS degree, which is not the case with teaching or being a real estate agent.

I love how people b**** about real estate agents.

As in, they don't do anything, they're completely unnecessary, etc.

If they are so unnecessary, don't use one.

But, people end up using them...why?

Because real estate agents have a monopoly on access to the market, and they won't show your house to their clients if they know you're selling it yourself? They even freeze out agents whom they think are coming from outside "their" territory.

This isn't a stupid board, so don't post stupid replies - everyone knows real estates are just left of the mob when it comes to racketeering. Silicon Valley is finally starting to take notice of the residential real estate sales market, and hopefully some sort of social media service will finally break the backs of real estate agents. No more 6% for taking some photos, throwing them on the MLS, and hosting an open house.

Lots of startups like Redfin and EXP are finally changing things up.

It is best to use a realtor when selling a property. I haggle a lower commission, and if something in the paperwork gets screwed up, I have can blame the realtor, and sue the shit out of the reality company.

Let's not forget car salespeople. They deserve a spot right there with the real estate agents and teachers.

Not based on what I have been seeing. There are some smart CS grads. Most seem to have gone into CS because they were told that is where the money is. They came out lacking the ability to THINK abount how their job fits in with the broader picture of what the company is trying to accomplish.

Teaching in a present day FFX county school is not easy. More baby sitting takes place than actual educating.

IMO real estate agents take the lead for being the worst. Their mantra- "you must update your bathroom and kitchen before I can ever consider selling your home" is mind numbing!

A desirable property is a desirable area will sell itself. To move a less than desirable property and/or one in a less desirable area takes considerably more work. Then there are the large number of potential homebuyers out there who have completely unrealistic expectations of what they can afford and the large number of potential homebuyers who have no clue how the process works.

I dated some teachers when I was single. They are some of the most pathetic miserable people out there. I mean...bless their hearts for doing what they do, but there's no way I could come home to one of those whiney bitches every day.

What business doesn't have a "monopoly" (as you call it) on information...or their time?

Yeah,,,lawyers, accountants, etc...any other businesses...just give their information, time and advice away.

"Silicon Valley is finally starting to take notice"? If you mean internet entrepreneurs, and if you mean the last 15 or 20 years as "finally"...

Where have you been? The internet has been involved with residential real estate since the mid 90's.

Look...if you think real estate agents don't provide a service, or don't add value, don't use them. It's that simple. Do it yourself.

There has always been cut rate real estate services, and for the about the last 20 years, the internet has provided real estate information...

Is that what you mean by "finally"?, Like, the last 20 years?

Way to be cutting edge.

Very simple...if you don't think a real estate agent provides value, don't use them.

Do it yourself...research the sales prices, talk to all the agents nearby that might have a contract pending on a similar house, take pictures and put together a flier, put it on the internet, have an open house, put a contract together, negotiate the deal, etc.

Have at it!

I have a couple of neighbors that like to b**** about realtors. They have both at one time put their houses on the market for sale, at about $200 above what the market would bear.

They stand around at neighborhood cocktail parties telling stories of the contractors they've sued, and the Sh***y jobs real estate agents do (because their houses wouldn't sell for some ridiculous price).

Meanwhile, I've hired contractors and haven't had to sue them, interviewed and hired a real estate agent, agreed on a price, got my house sold, and moved on.

I still see these neighbors, who are smarter than everyone else, they are still in their old houses, still telling stories about stupid real estate agents, and about the contractors they've sued.

Who is stupid in that crowd?

You. You continue to see your former idiot neighbors. Once I discover someone is an idiot, I essentially cross them off my list. Why do you torture yourself like that?

It's not torture to hear idiot neighbors, as you call them, prattle on for a few minutes.

In small doses, it is actually entertaining for a while.

Not everyone in the old neighborhood is worthless.

Your story is a fabriction - it never happened. You should have picked a less ridiculous number than 200k, then you might have had a chance at credibility. I mean, if you moved, why would you still see your neighbors?

Look, we get it - your wife (or more pathetically, you) is a real estate agent. But let’s be honest: it’s a racket populated by anyone with a pulse who can pass a multiple choice test. Now here’s a true story: one week the guy pouring coffee at my local Dunkin‘ Donuts told me he was taking the RE agent exam. I asked if it was difficult, and he told me making coffee was harder. I guess he passed, because I haven’t seen him since. That’s the caliber of mind taking 6% for pushing a sign into the ground.

Wait - are you a real estate agent? In the residential market? Why would a man take a job that is the domain of women?

GOOD IDEA. WE COULD HAVE RE-BOOTING ECG HEART MONITORS, BUILDINGS THAT SET FIRE ALARMS CONTINUALLY FOR NO REASON, AIR PORTS THAT HAVE 3 DAY WAITS DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES, MILITARY MISSILES THAT FIRE WHEN WE'RE SLEEPING, AND BANKING SOFTWARE THAT SHADOW TRANSFERS FUNDS TO CHINA WITHOUT OUR KNOWING WHY OUR DEBT ISN'T AS POTENT AS THEIR DEBT
