I-66 Construction Updates (outside the Beltway)
Posted by: Savage.Juegos ()

For all roadgeeks and curious commuters on FFXU~

It's definitely been a while since we saw something as interesting as the 495 Express Lanes project, the Springfield Interchange or the whole Woodrow Wilson Bridge complex go up. While the part of the tolling system inside the Beltway was quite a problem, I hope things are better outside with the project starting there.

Post the latest reports and photos you've seen of the project here.

My neighbor is the project manager. They have submitted a plan for 8 lanes in each direction from 495 to 81. They'll likely cut that plan back to 6 in each direction due to right of way concerns. No official word on tolls but, the legislature has been pushing for it.

Sure if you say so, that'll be eventually done. Heck, the product will be something even more interesting than two new lanes from I-495 to Gainesville.

Here's the way to fix traffic on I-66:

- Put one HOT lane and one HOV/buses only lane in each direction out to Rt. 15.
- Extend Metro out Gainesville (1 new station at Fair Lakes, 1 new station at Rt. 28, 1 new station at 236/236 bypass and 1 new station at Gainesville).
- Implement an infrastructure tax on builders to help fund the projects above

We can start with an express metro bus that goes up and down 66, with stops at these mentioned points.

That and a bus coming from manassas VRE, straight up 28 into centreville with a stop around the 28/29 intersection, then on up 28 stopping @ route 50, dulles expo center, wiehle avenue metro, ashburn, dulles airport, and as far north as dulles town center would be great, I would pay $4 each way to catch this bus and make the entire run in <1 hour! Instead of having to catch a feeder bus to vienna metro, then riding the orange/silver line all the way around to dulles which takes 3 hours each way on a good day.

Yes but I'm mostly looking for real-time updates and photos from anyone out there.

Two months into the 495 Express Lanes project they were already clearing, preparing bridge work and putting in those infamous lane stripes. Wonder if the same thing is going on over on I-66 as we speak?

Manassas to Dulles in 'three hours'? That is insane.

Found these neat I-66 plans on the WTOP website. I'm definitely looking forward to some of the bottlenecks being fixed, as well as the Nutley St. diverging-diamond interchange and the 28 stack. Hopefully they can even slot Metro further down 66 in the median!

Bus? That's the nigger hauler. That's for niggers. I'd rather sit in the peace and quiet of my car in traffic for 2 hours than ride the bus for 5 seconds.

Some pretty interesting news about the I-66 construction. May sound a little technical, but with this contract secured you should definitely see such work take place really soon.

This is all cool, but at least start a new thread where someone isn't claiming they live next to the PM. When in fact they probably live next to a dozer operator who claims he's a PM, and repeats what he overhear (and misinterpreted) at lunch. BTW, not even kidding.

Straight from Wmata.com website to get to dulles by 9am any given weekday coming from the Manassas VRE station- look at how much it costs too! You have to catch the VRE train to do it too...no bus option at ALL coming out of manassas (I know it is possible to catch the omniride/omnilink buses but would need to look this one up too it would likely take LONGER to do!)

Little late on this but this is quite an important update to the road, now construction has finally begun. Hopefully I can see more updates come in briefly, better get the pace going and get the road set in anticipation for the project to progress.
