My heat pump is frozen solid white outside, should I be worried?

The heat is still working but the heat pump is running with the whole outside of it frozen solid. Will it blow up and kill me?

The heat pump has failed to go into the defrost cycle. I don't know the ramifications, but there is a purpose for the defrost cycle.

WTF! Are you keeping livestock in your living room?

That filter is fucking gross. Air filters for HVAC Systems should be changed every 2 months.

Change them more often if you have many people living in the home.

The filter was not the problem, as a previous poster stated it is a defrost issue. Turn to Emergency heat and call someone to service.

heat pumps aren't more efficient at providing heat - they are a DUAL PURPOSED device that provides both heat and cooling

it's cooling that costs more in warm areas and the heat pump does that fine (more energy to cool than heat no matter what device you have)

what electric heat and heat pumps do do right is they are FULLY VENTED (they do not rob indoor air, they do not pollute indoor air)

if it's not enough you'll need two or to run space heaters; so your "reversible" profits are not so good.

it's amazing that most heating systems for SFD these days (including mine) are only 1/2 vented

Benjamin Franklin tinkered with dual venting heating for God's sake and the assholes still refuse to put an extra pipe into the plans / install.

absolutely fucking pitiful

(p.s. one of the easiest ways to find a fully vented system other than electric is: A WOOD BURNING STOVE)

and that tells you about "man's progress" kinda and whether your government really gives a flying fuck about BEING GREEN

another almost laughable one (less energy lost): refridgerators that vent heat into an air-conditioned home instead of to the out-doors

(and then there's the refusal to allow rolling stops and stepping on the gas, spending millions or billions developign video games only the develpers that made them ever play, wasting water and food, goes on and on)

our decendants 2,000 years from now (if they aren't all niggers and spics eating each other), will be burning effigies of this generation because they have no fuel

Have you met Svennestle on this board? You just did.

He is the one that writes the crazy rants that make no sense and likes to enlarge and boldface his words- but it still doesn't make sense. You can tell by his writing style.

I get the basic idea of what he is trying to say though but I have been here for years and still can't decipher his comments half the time.

We just learn to ignore it and move on.

Actually, a dirty filter is one of the most common causes of defrost failures. When the unit defrosts it switches into the cooling mode and shuts the outdoor fan off. The unit has to extract heat from the indoor air to take outside and melt the ice. If the air filter is dirty it limits the amount of heat that is available. Most defrost controls give up on defrosting after 10 to 12 minutes so the partially defrosted coil will be put back into service and build up even more ice. Most big repair companies will sell you a new defrost board even though it was just a dirty filter.

Refrigerators just moved heat around. Ignoring the heating from the motor windings and compressor losses, the refrigerator increases the temperature of the house slightly in order to decrease the temperature of the space inside. As the heat from the house warms the refrigerated space, the compressor moves that heat back to the room air. So on average, inside the control surface of the house perimeter, the refrigerator has no effect.

thought i don't have one, a "made in USA" system with such a failure mode would usually have A BYPASS to prevent that kind of failure

if it does have an "immediate failure / replacement required" mode simply from an old filter, and if there is not bypass for air to allow for the event the filter is dirty: it is not a quality built product

Dual venting is sometimes called high-low venting. I have installed it in a few houses and have found it is usually not very effective. 95% of systems out there are single vented and most of them work fine. On the upper level of a home high venting is the preferred method. The lower level can go either way.

Yes I am a dumbass for not changing the air filter, I usually change it like every 3 months and I thought I had changed it but in reality it had been in there about a year. My heat pump is a Trane and they say it is hard to stop a trane but I stopped it by being a dumbass and not replacing the filter for a entire year. Alexa has ordered a case of air filters and she is going to remind me every 60 days to replace them.

Listen dipshit, "svennestle" brought up dual venting in the context of Benjamin Franklin. I don't remember my history as well as you do apparently, but old Ben wasn't big into heat pumps. Yes, the OP is a troll. We moved on in this thread. His filter wasn't dirty enough to cause his issue. Those things aren't filters. They just catch the big rocks and hair.

Natural gas and propane powered heat pumps have been around for many years you ignorant fuck. I have one in my cabin in the mountains and it works great.

My understanding is that you can go 90 days easy if you don't smoke or have lots of animals. Check it at 60 and see if it looks bad - you might be able to let it go another month. But I wouldn't let it go much more than that, especially in the winter when it's likely to be running a lot.

According to me, it's time to get worried about why your heat pump is getting frozen solid white from outside. I remember a few days ago one of my cousins who is living in Goleta was facing a similar type of issue with the heat pump. But then she contacted the professional heat pump repair Goleta, who looked after the issue and solved it properly. Likewise, you should also take some helpful hints from the professional near you.

Did you know that the most common cause of defrost failure is a dirty air filter? Most service techs will sell you a new board and termination switch but most of the time it is not needed.
During defrost the heat pump switches into cooling mode to pump some heat out of the house to melt the ice on the outdoor coil. If the filter is clogged the heat needed to defrost cannot reach the indoor coil and most defrost board algorithms give up on defrost after 10 or 12 minutes so some of the ice remains and it gets worse with every failed defrost cycle. Check your air filter before you call for service.

Yes, you should be worried that your heatpump outside is frozen solid.

Because that means it is broken and you will have to find someone capable of fixing it.

Because you are in Virginia, GOOD LUCK! Just prepare to empty your wallet as some illiterate meth-addicted piece of white trash changes every part in the unit in an attempt to get it working.

Or, you could hire some illegal alien to do the same shit and pay less money.

Ideally, what you would want is someone with a functioning brain who can read the service documentation, run some tests, and replace only the faulty component. But since you are in Virginia, such people are as rare as rocking horse shit.

Freezing rain. Because heat pumps extract heat from the outdoor air the are very cold. When freezing rain hits the ice cold coil it freezes on contact. Only happens a few times a winter.

Newer heatpumps that have demand defrost will automatically go into defrost long before they are a block of ice. And won't go into defrost when they don't need it.

Unlike the old ones that go into defrost every hour, 90 minutes, or whatever the timer is set to no matter whether it's needed or not.

And there is an aftermarket universal defrost control made by Emerson that runs about $80 and can be used to add demand defrost to an older unit. It would probably pay for itself after a year or two.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Leave this topic to the professionals.

Yea, a professional maintenance man.

I have a heat pump with demand defrost and I can assure you that I have NEVER seen it completely frozen over, even during freezing rain.

Since you probably have no idea what demand defrost is, why don't you go google it and learn something?

Actually...do you know even know that heat pumps are supposed to go into defrost, or are you the "maintenance man" at some low-rent apartment complex where none of that shit works right?

"Gee Cletus, sometimes the heat pump makes a "WHOOSH" noise, the fan stops, and a bunch of smoke comes out! That don't seem right so I started disconnecting the wires till I found the one that won't make it do that no more. Now it's all better"

If smoke comes out you got a serious problem. Only steam should shoot out of the outdoor unit at the end of the defrost cycle.

Ya think? Guess again, your coil in your air handler is probably filthy and needs cleaning too if your air filter looks like that. Sheesh!

You really think a guy named Cleetus would know the difference between smoke and steam???

I think a guy named Cleetus would be MORE likely to know the difference between smoke and steam. the Cleetuses of the world lack sophistication and book smarts, but they tend to be much better tinkerers. Knowing the difference between smoke and steam and what it means is a basic tinkering knowledge.

About all they're capable of doing is making anything with an engine louder.
