I think PW top five schools proved last year that they are better than FCPS teams (except for WHS) will their dominance continue through this year?

When PWCPS actually wins something we'll talk. Until then it's like LCPS crowing about a some regular season wins and then not getting it done in the playoffs. Bottom line is that Westfield and Centreville have won a 4 state championships since anyone from either PWCPS or LCPS has.

If you can’t see the shift in talent you are a blind FCPS homer only a matter of time before PWCPS team breaks through. I don’t see WHS being able to contain a WBridge team this year and CVHS will be lucky to finish 3rd in their own district. Lucky playoffs are set up the way they are, PWC teams beat and knock each other out, otherwise put them in the pool wit FCPS and be a different story.

Woodbridge had 9 players on last year's team with D1 offers. And about another 4-5 that will play at D2. If they couldn't get past Westfield last year I don't think it's a given it will happen in 2018.

Woodbridge better worry about getting by Lake Braddock this year.

Doc has done such a good job rebuilding this program and will have this team ready to compete for a state championship this year.

Come on and ride on the Bruin train, because if you get in the way, the Bruins will run you over!

You must suffer from short term memory loss, did you forget the but whooping Vikings out down on you guys? You could see the fear as you all got off the school bus. Heard halftime players and coaches has to change their poopie drawers. 20-2, yeah that was a close game alright.

True statement.Difference in that game was Bulldogs won the turnover battle. Until WB improves their QB situation, don’t see how they will beat WHS or an OS.

So silly...

Plausible explanations why the top teams in PW have gotten better... and why the middling and bottom teams have become a shell of their former selves. Same for Loudoun. Fairfax not as much but still plenty of shenanigans and transfers for no other reason than to play sports.

Friends with coaches in all three local counties. Follow me, please...if you can.

Northern Virginia football is now a known commodity. I am not just talking about players like Jonathan Allen or Trace McSorley.

The top five teams in each county all have scholarship players and these kids have been doing well at the next level. A lot of them. Lineman, running backs, safeties - all positions. Success breeds more and more of it.

If you have a college-type kid at the bottom feeders, you are going to be "recruited" to come to schools that compete in the playoffs and regionals - where they get noticed. It is next to impossible to get a coach to look at a kid from places like Park View, Annandale, and Garfield.

These real good kids all get to know each other at the camps that they all go to. Football is now just about a year-round sport. These kids buddy up and push their talented new friends to join them. Plus, a lot of parents drink the Kool-Aid and move or, worse still, lie about their address.

Prince William and Loudoun each have four schools that would regularly beat the pants off of all the Fairfax schools (except for Westfield, which has an amazing number of accomplished coaches on their staff) because the talent has consolidated. Programs in Fairfax like Robinson and Oakton have become average. More of the talent drain is to come, because VHSL does little to prevent it.

I do enjoy it, however, when I see parents at a place like Stone Bridge pony up booster money every year, hoping to gain the good graces of the coaching staff, only to see their kid relegated to the bench for their senior seasons when some transfer waltzes in and takes their spot.

Very difficult to refute anything hear that I have had to say...

I agree with the bulk of your analysis. And judging by the number of repeat state champions across all classifications the consolidation of top players seems to be widespread. Will say that you rarely ever see a kid transfer to Westfield after they are already in high school. What happens before that who knows but their players almost exclusively spend four years with the program.

I don’t recall any transfers in recent memory that made a significant contribution for the Bulldogs. Their success has been on the coaching staffs ability to adapt to their personnel. Even with all their success hey don’t have kids moving into their area or transferring. They are lucky the kids who do come play are hard workers & are “coachable”.

Now some of those other areas esp LOCO is like the Wild Wild West, where their philosophy is “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” & “bend but don’t break” the rules philosophy. They seem to poach each other’s kids and bench players.

It's happening in Prince William and some in Fairfax County too. Nothing like paying your dues for 3 years and then someone transfers in your senior year and takes your spot. Really helps team spirit and camaraderie among the players.

Speaking of transfers, is the Oakton transfer to Stone Bridge expected to be the lead back (Jared Cole)? He's a good player, albeit not large. His parents are putting a lot of faith in those coaches by selling their house in Fox Mill and moving to Ashburn.

Hope it works out for the young man.

No way he is this year. They have a returning RB with size that is more their prototypical back. 6,1” 205lbs. JC will be change of pace and work out the slot.
PWCS with their lax rules regarding boundaries, it’s a wonder they haven’t won or even made it to states more than they have (last time being 2010?).

Yes, not just Rowley, virtually the entire coaching staff from Oakton. Including his sidekick, John Glufling.

Until Chantilly starts winning state titles like Westfield, I doubt anyone will be trolling Chantilly.

Not this year. 35-10 halftime. MHS JV did not do so well last year & Fr team even worse. They are on a downward cycle.

SB doesn’t get the impact transfers until the kids JR year.
CVHS is a mess. Not what it once was.
SYC (youth program) is a mess (they don’t win at any level). Takes SOCO HS coaches a couple of years to get those players where they need to be.

>>> True. But Madison? Oakton?

CYA, SYA and SC Youth have, in the past, when good at Youth, passed it on to Centerville, Chantilly, and South County HS's. Even BRYC passed it on to Robinson and Lake Braddock. Once even to Woodson where the band is more important.

Oakton sucks. Madison is marginal. Why?

Madison is going to be just fine. Probably about the same results as last year 7-3 to 8-2. 1 or 2 playoff wins - just depends on how the team gels. They have players.

James Madison

2017 yeah...South Lakes...that sucked...scheme and those three guys...did it in 2016 during the season...coaching staff didn't prepare them.

2016 9-1 bad playoffs??? ...winning conference, two playoff games and staying even with eventual state champion Westfield thru halftime in the north regional final...pretty good

2015 9-1 bad playoffs...yeah...give you that one, open round loss to Chantilly(?) in the playoffs...like that last time they were any good.

Like the man said, 7-3/8-2 this year. JMHS has basically the same schedule as last year with home/away switched, so Westfield, Stone Bridge, WestPo, SoCo, Cville all at home this time around. If they do 7-3 or better it is good year.

I was reviewing the highlights of the Madison vs WHS game & it looks like WHS had some kind of pick play off the left side for an easy long bomb for the difference maker TD. After looking at the WHS vs O. Smith game highlights, it looks like a similar play but with #2 & #3 players swapping roles.

In fact many of the plays were the same with similar results between both WHS playoff games..

But the bigger take away that I saw was that the WHS opponents had success running but decided to pass too much & gave precious turnovers TO WHS. without Madison's & O. Smith's sloppy play in 2017, I think their wouldn't have been a 3peat. Heck O. Smith had 4 turnovers & still had a chance to tie that game on the last play!!!

WHS has problems with a SB type of ground & pound game. That will be their weakness again this year, too. Keep the ball for a longer period of time against them & they'll wear down.

Stone Bridge and Robinson have given Westfield as much trouble as anyone the past few years. Robinson probably should have beaten us the last two times we played them, but we pulled out some unlikely victories given the way the games played out. We defend the spread offense well. Teams that slam it at us can control the ball and the flow of the game, which hurts our offense. I think that’s how you beat Westfield. We just haven’t ran into those teams in the playoffs.
Some will say Centreville does the same stuff, but they are much more of a finesse football team than the other two.

Westfield is very good with that pick play. And they know it will not get called. HS football in the area has really resisted adding the extra official most states have added because of the increase in passing. With only one official deep, WHS can disguise the pick and it never gets called. It is much clearer if you watch them play 7 on 7. Same thing happens in regular games, but too many bodies close to the line for the BJ to see it.

Why don't you become a volunteer ref? Maybe they resist an extra official because they don't have enough the way it is. There is a shortage of officials now - adding another ref would only compound the problem.

Which Madison game are you referring to? The long TD in the 10-6 game last year was no pick play and was on the right sideline.

The difference between this year and probably the past 5-6 years is that Westfield can now rely on its offense to win. They have all their skill players back from last year. The 7 on 7 they had they ran shotgun pretty much the entire tournament, which they won. Even more impressive is their QB called ALL of his own plays. Been watching WF football since Sean Glennon and Eddie Royal were youngsters. Been a long time since they had a team that has the ability on offense to put points on the board. They'll be good on defense as well but make no mistake, I think it will be there offense that carries them this year.

If you were reviewing the film then you probably also saw Westfield, with an easy chance to put the game away, blow it late. Their run game on the final offensive series ran the ball threw Madison's D. For some inexplicable reason with 3rd and about 1 they tried a pitch play, WF's RB is effective north and south. He gets dropped for a loss and WF turns the ball back to Madison. There was a minute, maybe less at that point, just poor play calling.

If you watched the Oscar Smith film then you saw that Oscar Smith had to pass because, as with the previous 2 games against Smith, WF had the lead for the better part of the game. Plus, don't forget that WF had multiple turnovers in this game, the key one late that turned the ball over to Smith so they had a chance to win. It was pretty similar to the circumstance above but the QB for WF fumbled when the game was in hand. Smith could not stop WF's run game.

With 36secs left end of the games & OS had no timeouts why didn’t WF go to victory formation?

It was a close call time-wise. Westfield had a 3rd and 3 with 33 seconds left in the game at their own 49 yard line. 25 second play clock. A kneel down would only run about 2-3 seconds off. So theoretically you could have had a 4th down play that would have needed to be run. A kneeldown would instantly stop the clock and the ball would turn over on downs giving OS at least one play.

Lake Braddock coaches continue to break rules and hold organized team workouts at local gyms during red periods. Or their coaches charge players to train them. Either way this is a violation or FCPS rules. https://twitter.com/coachoden/status/1014996980328747010?s=21

They are a bunch of cheaters, they talk about integrity and being significant but are nothing but a bunch of cheaters.

What about all this discipline coach Doc tells the parents, yet LB has been in a fight at every 7v7 tournament they have entered. I guess the only thing this staffs cares about is being 5 minutes early for practice.

If they are 1 and done in the playoffs this year, look for changes next year

I will say the one flaw I see in Westfield's game is their 4th quarter play calling. The last two year's they let OS back in the game because of bone headed calls. Yes they had to run a play last year, if they took a knee the refs were not going to be in a hurry to spot the ball game would have been over. Worst case take a snap on 4th down take a few steps backwards and kneel. I get running the ball up the middle by the time you unpile bodies game over. But it almost seemed they were trying to get a first down which they didn't need.

In 2016 they called a WR pass to the QB in the 4th quarter that let OS back in after INT. Just dumbfounded. They like rolling the dice in the state championship game, I'm surprised it hasn't bitten them yet.

No one is perfect. Simmons spent 4 years getting bashed for being too conservative in playcalling. He's adjusted just a tad the last three seasons. Just a very small tad. Not all the gambles work out. The WR pass last fall that ended up being intercepted didn't work out very well either. But if it had no one would have complained.

Assuming you’re talking about Fairfax HS, has to be someone on staff, real late in the game to interview anyone especially with a new Peincipal too. It sucks for the kids for HC to bail on them like that but DSA @ LB is definitely better gig than HC & FHS.

Sounds like coaching staff and the players are trying to do a faux tough guy act to show they aren’t afraid of predominantly black teams & shake off the embarrassing defeat against Woodbridge last year. Expect 7-3 maybe even 6-4 reg season and bounced out 2nd rd again.

It’s straight bs that VHSL preseason rankings put Woodbridge @ 17 and they have LB at 15. Didn’t we crush them in playoffs 20-2? Didn’t we make it to state semi’s? No respect but that’s ok cuz we gonna take it out on everybody and when we see LB again, gonna be worse 50-0! Believe that!

That's because Doc will have this team ready to play this year. He and the staff now have a full year under the belt and you can see this team coming together everyday. Gone are the days of undisciplined players doing what they want, every member is accountable and that will equal more wins then ever before.

Most people on this board thought LB should be rated in the top 3.

This may be the best team LB has had in a long times. Toughness, Discipline, Significance and family are all traits on this team. There is a new sheriff in town, so everyone better watch out.

Voted "The best staff in the state"

Better check your Website again, I believe it's VHSL Reference & they post rankings based off historical weighted averages & from analysis algorithms. VHSL Reference has nothing to do with the VHSL Foundation.

The idea is tbased on how your team has performed in the past can predict it's future tendencies. The statistics cannot account for injuries, transfers or coaching changes, but it has been a fairly good predictor.

It's VHSL Reference - a private website. No affiliation with the VHSL.

Their rankings are strictly computer algorithms similar to Calpreps etc. They are actually a pretty accurate assessment for the most part - more accurate in than Calpreps in my opinion.

Westfield is the only VHSL school with a winning record against top 1000 ranked Calpreps teams (18-17). Compare to Stone Bridge (8-16) or Oscar Smith (11-20). Salem, Bird, Phoebus, H Springs near .500.

Speaking of which, how they looking for the upcoming year? Things have been a lot quieter from their camp compared to last year when you had some posters and Coaches spouting off how that team looked as good as the state championship teams of a few years ago.

No, Coach Haddock did compare last year's team with the 2013/2014 teams. In the preseason. Repeatedly. Thought it was irrational exuberance. A good team but obviously not at that level.

They should have another solid year this fall. Sure they lost a few key players but they are returning the bulk of both offensive and defensive starters. With Egbers, Horner, Wright, Maxwell etc. they will be good. Will have a shot at beating anyone they play.

Some teams just think they are above the rules. You would think with all the bad PR the school has received in past year and a half, they wouldn't allow anything that's even borderline close to bending rules.

This coach is not the right coach for this program, he is more of the cheerleader type. He would be better suited at a Woodson, Annandale or Fairfax.

If you look at last year, they had no signature wins. All the wins were against the weaker teams.
They beat SoCO who had a down year yet lost to West Potomac, who had a down year.
Stone Bridge killed them, first time SB ever beat a LB team. Westfield beat them easily. Woodbridge embarrassed them in the playoffs.

I think the program will be evaluated ay the end of the season, if the same trend is there, then I believe a change will be made. The principal is an ex football coach and understands how a program needs to be built to compete for state championships each year

If this staff doesn't win with all the talent they have again this year, they will be out.

I know this is hoping for a lot but do you guys think that the Westfield DeMatha scrimmage will be more interesting than normal? I don't want to get caught in this Westfield hype too earlier in the year but they are returning probably their most skill position starters ever and have quite a few players (Kim, Asante, Morin) that could probably fare pretty well in private school ball.

You forgot a couple kids like Woodley, McLean, Clancy, and Hinton. Only problem for Westfield this year is the lack of players and size on both the OL & DL. They do have many skill position players returning but will struggle if they can't keep Kim upright or open holes for the running game.

They will do well this year but would be a stretch to think they can win 4 in a row without size, numbers, & strength in the trenches. I think their scrimmages with Dematha, St. Johns, & Quince Orchard will show how they might struggle this year with physical opponents.

Guess we shall see......

Agree, if they lose a game this year, it will be against a team that can grind out a physical running game plan. They have the athletes and game plan to stop the spread offenses. Teams who get greedy usually pay for it with turnovers against them. Run against Westfield until they consistently stop it. Then run some more! Success will come in the last 3rd of the game!

Absolutely. They don't have the bodies to stop the run. They really didn't last year either but no one would play an old school running game against them. Stone Bridge and Briar Woods figured that out 2 years ago.

The coach should absolutely be suspended for at least 1 game.

This coach always talks about integrity accountability, well its time for him to step up and accept his responsibility and set the example that you are always preaching.

Coaches that break the rules should have to pay the price.

As someone who has watched the Westfield program as a jealous dad in the opposing stands for 10 years, all I can say is they are the prohibitive favorite to win their 4th title in a row until proven otherwise. While perhaps their OL and DL will have some challenges in the early going, I have no doubt that come playoff time, they will be functioning as a well-oiled machine. They are the gold standard.

If you all think the coach should be suspended for that it’s stupid as hell of you. How many coaches in the region let alone the whole state do private training. The QB coach at champe hs in LOCO does private QB training. Should he be suspended? He works with his guys. This coach for LB trains kids from Woodson and Robo and whoever wants to workout with him. Nothing in the rules about that. He got oermission from county for it

It’s 100% against the rules. Absolutely no contact what so ever during dead periods. FYI that picture is also taken from inside Lake Braddocks weight room.

What other games are “must see” that didn’t make the list?

http://www.ultimaterecruit.com/nova-football/vhsl-schedule-must-see-703/Here’s a short list of games you won’t want to miss this fall
by Andy Hilton, recruitNoVA

The VHSL schedule just came out a couple of days ago and we want to take the opportunity to highlight as many top games as we can so that you can mark your calendar.

We’re bound to miss a few. We’re going to include the obvious ones and we might leave off some that you think should be included. Half of Westfield’s games might be called rivalry games considering that the Bulldogs have won the Class 6 State Championship three years in a row. Every team has Westfield circled on their schedule.

The same could be said for most of the teams who have a habit of winning a lot.

So, here we go. These are the games you won’t want to miss on this fall’s VHSL schedule for the 703 region. We’re splitting up Northern Virginia and providing a second article that will focus on the 540 region/southern section of our NoVA coverage. That region includes Stafford and Fredericksburg, south to the Richmond metro.

Westfield at Lake Braddock (8/24/18)

Westfield doesn’t get an easy opener as they hit the road in the defense of their third consecutive Class 6 state title. In their state championship season of 2015, Westfield met Lake Braddock in the playoffs and dismantled them by a score of 31-7. Last year, in the season opener, Westfield prevailed by a score of 28-10. This out-of-district game hasn’t been too good for the Bruins. Lake Braddock has lost three in a row and hasn’t beaten the Bulldogs since the 2014 regular season when they managed a 36-23 win in the fourth game of that season. Westfield avenged that loss with a playoff win against the Bruins later that season. Lake Braddock’s 12-game season in 2017 was the shortest season in the past five years. From 2013-2016, Lake Braddock lost in their 13th game of the season.

Broad Run at Tuscarora (8/31/18)

Broad Run has to consider themselves title contenders once again this year. The Spartans won back-to-back state titles in 2008 and 2009, and have been contenders almost every year since. They’ve averaged nine wins every season for the past five years, but have fallen short of the state championship game every season. In 2017, the Spartans dusted Tuscarora 28-12 in week two, but couldn’t break through in the second round of the playoffs, losing 14-12. In 2016, Broad Run had the Huskies’ number, beating them in the season finale and then turning around and topping them again in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Matt Griffis has his son back for his junior season at quarterback. Mitch Griffis committed to play his college ball for Wake Forest over the summer.

John Champe at Centreville (8/31/18)

Both of these teams are now relegated to being teams “on the cusp”. Centreville went 15-0 in a state championship season in 2013. John Champe is close to averaging eight wins a season in the past four years. Because of a four-win season in 2015, Centreville’s win per season average isn’t much better. Both teams come into the 2018 season with something to prove. In 2017, Centreville won easily by a score of 35-21. Last year’s game was the first ever game between the two programs. A win here is a step in the right direction for the victor.

C.D. Hylton at Colonial Forge (9/14/2018)

Colonial Forge is the 540 area code, but that doesn’t keep this from being a great rivalry. Bill Brown is no longer the head coach at Forge as his son John Brown steps in. Bill is still on the staff and he was a long time coach at Hylton. Last year, the Bulldogs and Eagles went toe to toe in a game that went into overtime. Kicker Jadon Redding put the Eagles ahead with a field goal, and the Eagles defense stuffed three Ricky Slade rushing attempts, then blocked a field goal in order to pull out a 37-34 road win. You can bet Hylton will bring the house in this fall’s rematch. Colonial Forge won 13 straight in 2017 before falling in the state semifinal to Oscar Smith.

South Lakes at Centreville (9/21/18)

South Lakes would have had a perfect regular season record in 2017 if it weren’t for Centreville. The Wildcats are always a problem for the Seahawks. In the last nine meetings, Centreville has won eight times. The 2017 game was a 31-13 win for Centreville. The 2016 playoffs provided the only recent win for South Lakes, and that was a 22-20 nail biter. South Lakes is 23-4 over the past two seasons. The Centreville game will be a measuring stick for both programs. Centreville is working to get back to the State Championship game for the first time since 2014.

C.D. Hylton at Freedom (PW) (9/28/18)

Prince William County is loaded with talented football teams. Hylton had a hangover from their overtime loss to Colonial Forge in the week prior to this match up last year. Freedom managed to knock the Bulldogs on their heels enough to pull out a 48-42 win in the 2017 regular season. C.D. Hylton got payback in the playoffs and ended Freedom’s perfect season with a decisive 45-28 win. In the second game of the playoffs. Ricky Slade is gone, but the cupboard isn’t bare at Hylton. Freedom comes into the season with plenty of firepower as well.

Westfield at Patriot (9/28/18)

The Patriot Pioneers could argue that a State Championship might have been theirs in 2017 if it weren’t for Westfield. Patriot is one of the teams that will certainly see a target on the chest of the Bulldogs. Mid-season in 2017, Westfield downed Patriot by a score of 46-33. Westfield had their number in the playoffs as well, winning that game 35-6 to end the Pioneers’ season. Colonial Forge beat Patriot in the 2017 season opener, but it was Westfield that did them in. Patriot improved from a 7-4 record in 2016 to 9-3 in 2017. Another step forward could put them closer to the Class 6 State Championship game, but Westfield would most certainly be in the way. Patriot High School opened in 2012 and has only played Westfield twice. Both games came last year and both were losses.

Freedom (PW) at Woodbridge (10/12/18)

Both teams went deep into the playoffs in 2017. Woodbridge lost in the state semifinal to Westfield and finished the season 12-2. Their only other loss was to Freedom, and that was a 41-14 thumping that was uncharacteristic of the Vikings’ season. Freedom reeled off 11 straight wins in 2017 and saw that perfect record come to a halt when Hylton knocked them off in the second round of the Class 6 playoffs. Both Freedom and Woodbridge fell short in 2017 considering that Westfield navigated the playoff minefield that they couldn’t.

Tuscarora at Stone Bridge (10/19/18)

These two Class 5 powers are consistently butting heads. In 2018, the Huskies knocked Stone Bridge out of the playoffs with a gut-wrenching 28-27 win in the Region Final. That win avenged a 14-13 regular season win by Stone Bridge. In 2016, Tuscarora was down and was easily beaten by the Bulldogs, but in 2015, the two teams traded the favor again. Few current players on either team were involved in the 2015 battles, but in that year, Tuscarora won the regular season meeting 42-19, only to be knocked off in the playoffs in a shootout, 54-41. Tuscarora made it all the way to the state title game in 2017, and this year it will be up to former assistant coach Brandon Wheelbarger to lead them to the promised land for a second year in a row. These two Potomac District teams seem destined to play each other twice again this year.

Stone Bridge at Broad Run (11/2/18)

If everything falls into place, both of these teams could be undefeated heading into this season finale. That’s how it was in 2017. Broad Run was 9-0 last year and lost this one by a score of 21-13. Stone Bridge kept their undefeated regular season, only to lose to Tuscarora in the playoffs. Stone Bridge will rely on Army commit Nick Mell and QB Mason Tatum as returning seniors to lead them after losing a significant group of senior leaders that included Jack Kosko (Notre Dame College), Bradley Block (Glenville State), Joey Nameth (William and Mary) and Daniel Thompson (Towson).

Got to have at least 1 Madison game on the list (Stone Bridge, Westfield or Centreville). Hayfield-South County.

this just might be an off-year for Westfield. They had a pretty crappy JV team last year so there's not a lot of talent coming up that wasn't already brought up (Simmons always picks the cream of the JV team clean to keep the dynamo of the varsity team going). But the Bulldogs have starters returning to key positions on offense, including their starting QB (only a junior this year), so they might tough it out an win another one this year.

Next year, Westfield will be brutal. Their freshmen team last year was undefeated and pretty much destroyed most of the teams they played. Great skill position players coming up to feed the varsity machine over the next two years from the class of 21. As long as they can maintain a decent O-line, they'll be a force for the next 3 years.

Fear the Bulldog, for he casts his shadow over the rest of the state's programs.

Wasn’t last year supposed to be the “down” year for WHS? How did that turn out.
Now they may not win it all this year but there is a huge difference between a “down” year versus not getting their 4-peat. Really believe you have to be lucky as you are good to win a championship.

Saw OS QB who transferred in week of state semifinal game has left OS. OS plans to use Cam Kelly at QB. Expect a lot of wildca, much better runner than thrower.
