Anybody know where I can take night classes for MS Server 2008?

Does anybody know of anywhere that I can take night classes to work toward my MCITP (specifically Enterprise Admin)?

All the things I've been finding are for bootcamps which I'm not interested in.

Oh, and I already looked at Nova CC. That sorry excuse for a school is only offering classes for Server 2003...here we are headed into the spring 2010 term and they still aren't offering classes from a product from 2008.

Impressive Nova CC.

Sadly boot camps seem to be the main mode of technical training for specific certifications unless you want to so self-paced or self-study training methods. At least NOVA has a similar class, I guess wait on them if you don't want to do a boot camp.

Do the server 2003. It is still the dominant product in use and server 2k3 vs 2k8 are pretty similar except for the UI in 2k8 looks like Vista. Of course there are tweaks that make it more difficult to do common tasks like adjust network connections. Start out with what you can do now and then just take the test for 2k8 and you will probably pass
I'm a MCDST for XP and if I took the Vista test I could probably pass it

I have way too many years working with Micro$oft products, but have now come to believe that Linux is the future for making money with a long-term career.

My questions for you, Gravis, are, how did you get involved in Linux? Our company has no use for it, though it seems more and more people are playing with it on the side. What's a good path for learning/applying/certifying for long-term employment? Seems the latest craze is Drupal. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks.

This is pretty correct.

It gets old having to re-certify every damn time. With Linux picking up speed and the cloud computing shift, having Linux experience/certification/etc will be very useful.

If you're absolutely set on getting Microsoft certified, you can still go with 2003. It's close enough. I personally don't agree with the way Microsoft sets up their certification tracks. They put you through all this bullshit (MCSE.. I'm looking at you) and by the time you finish, a new product is out.

Furthermore, the official Microsoft training/certification books go into WAY too much detail. Go to a bookstore next time and you'll see what I mean. I haven't seen the 2008 materials, but the books for the MCSE track were huge. You get trapped into learning all this book knowledge that has no use for the real world. I took a couple of Microsoft certification tests and the questions and answers were atrocious. Yes, they are the right answer, but there are easier ways to change a setting or do something.

PROTIP: To the individual who said "Micro$oft".. 1990 called.. they want their term back. Knock that shit off please.

At my current job I work with Microsoft, Linux, and Apple products. On the server side it breaks out to around 15 Windows servers, 8 Linux, and 1 Mac...so I get experience with all 3 operating systems.

While Linux may be a good certification to get, and I'm not denying that at all, I feel that it is a complement to Microsoft rather than a beast of it's own.

Once I finish the 2008 MCITP I will go after Linux certs, but for now I'm going down the Windows path.

If anybody has any idea where I can take classes to get the 2008 certs I would appreciate it.

The boot camps may work but saying to my company..."I'd like $2500 to take a class to pass a test, AND I need to take a week off of work to do it." isn't the easiest thing to do. The money isn't a problem, but the time off in addition to the money probably would be.

I don't know whether they are still around, but years ago I took classes from New Horizons in the toilet bowl building in Tysons. The classes were at night, the instructors really did work with the systems in their day jobs, and they didn't hesitate to share "unauthorized" ways of doing things to make our jobs easier. They "taught to the test" which made the cert tests easier. They also worked with new products in beta and could tell us what to expect that was different. That's where I would look for people who would know when classes for the latest-and-greatest will be available.

Love it or hate it, Microsoft is still king, and will be for a number of years to come. Still, linux knowledge is valuable, and you can earn a great living if you're good at it.

You want to learn Server 2008? Go to craigslist or ebay and buy yourself a good server. Don't worry, you can resell it later. Download an evaluation copy of 2008, and buy some books. Setup a domain at home. Create user accounts. Study DNS. Setup shared folders. Configure permissions. Install a evaluation version of Exchange. Learn shell commands. Don't be afraid to break it. Probably a better way to learn this stuff than by sitting in a class, IMHO.

You can even get a linux box and connect it to your network and further build your skills.

Re MCITP--most MS networking jobs still ask for MCSE, even though that's being phased out after Server 2003. Most HR dummies (and even hiring managers) aren't even aware of MCITP.

Certs are way overrated. Most of the IT gurus I know have few certs.

Boot camps are the ideal format for preparing for a professional certification. I would imagine that the pass rates for evening classes would be much lower. This is something you should consider when choosing your course.

Professional certification prep courses typically fall into the training realm, not in education. That will limit the availability of evening classes.

lol, get recertified every two years. Firstly, you don't need to get certified at all, much less every two years. Second, the differences between one version of Windows to the next is fairly small, so it isn't a big deal.

Learn one version very well, and then learn the differences from one version to the next. Easy.

If you can't do that, you should go to Linux. The world needs more terrible Linux admins.

gerrymanderer2 (OP) posts several lies on ffu daily - many\.10think he's a fx co gov worker who is getting paid to do it for false DNC democrat "advertising". he floods ffu with useless posts to bump down major news, posts fecal matter, mutilated bodies, child porn, foreign drug ads and sneaker ads, tells people to kill themselves and government should seize them and put them on psych pills in prison - decided by democrat gov of course, promotes kangaroo courthouse trials, gives anti-religious rants, gives satanic ritual rants, posts black males with large dicks on white young females, portends white low birth rate and fall of USA, food tampering/poisoning, and anything possible to DEMORALIZE white people on ffu. (perhaps a chinese prisoner or isis member - but definitely knowledgeable of fx co gov from the inside at times). the website operator has told him "not to post or return" which are still posted - not removed, by the sysop: not because of a political leaning but for continual illegal and gross spam along with messages that are only to demoralize if not kill others. he/she plays at financial terrorism as well: continuall reporting false financial data, and fake emergency please from (fake members of the community he makes up)

G2 HAS BEEN POSTING ANTI-APPLE ADS ON FFU FOR SEVERAL YEARS - AND FOR MOST OF THOSE YEARS SIMPLY LYING ON FACTS NOT SIMPLE MIS-CONCEPTIONS

I LOOKED AT THAT MS SERVER BOOK: IT IS FULL OF DAMN LIES

SUCH AS: IT CALLED FTP A MICROSOFT STANDARD AND THEN GOES ON TO LIE ABOUT IT. IT IS NOT, IT IS AN AT&T AND UNIX STANDARD FROM YEARS BEFORE MICROSOFT EXISTED

EVERYTHING IN THAT BOOK IS A LIE
