FCPS Substitute - DWI
Posted by: Aspiring Educator ()

Would a misdemeanor DWI conviction prevent an individual from being hired on as a Substitute for FCPS? I understand that there was/is a massive shortage of subs, but have also been keen to observe that many substitutes have been arrested (very publicly may I add) for various illegal behavior - everything from being intoxicated in class to taking indecent liberties with students. I would agree that this sort of behavior has no place in schools by any means. However, would a one-time mistake resulting in DWI prevent FCPS from hiring (assuming all other qualifications were met)?

Why not ask and find out? It's better to be up front about the past conviction than letting them find out later.

By the way, those were some interesting photos. Were those bus drivers drunk?

The DUI was recent. The experience cost me my career, my home, and my self-respect. After much reflection, I realized that I had been working an unfulfilling job with no future, in a relationship with a legitimate sociopath, and had lost my way. I never had a dependency on alcohol of any kind, but would find it hard to "just have one drink" and call it a night. I would always have 4 or 5 when I did go out for dinner/drinks. Although I thought I was sober enough to drive, I wasn't. Blew a 0.11. Acted like a total jerk to the police officer who arrested me as well. The whole thing made me really reevaluate my life. Without sounding too cliche, I do want to contribute to my community and maybe from a self-serving standpoint, feel like I'm doing something right for once. I figured that starting as a Sub and going from there would be a start. No, not as a bus driver.

I have applied for the position and have completed everything up to the "orientation" portion. That is when fingerprints will be taken etc. I know the DUI will show up and I have disclosed it on the application but my inclination is that no one looks at it carefully as it is mostly automated. The first time someone will actually look at the app as a whole will be once I submit my negative TB test and fingerprints to the county.

Ive tried to contact them but for obvious reasons the people at the Sub Office could not give me a specific answer citing that "they aren't the ones that make the call".

YOU'RE allowed to work for fcps, if it wasn't a felony

If you disclosed it and have made it this far in the application process, go ahead and get fingerprinted. You don't have to pay for it and the only thing you have to lose is the time spent at orientation. The people who work at the Gatehouse Sub Office are notoriously inefficient and difficult to work with, and they are currently desperate for literate substitutes who aren't going to fall asleep on the job. I expect you'll be fine as long as it wasn't a felony DWI.

Nope, the DWI is my first and only conviction - a misdemeanor. Hopefully it all works out but I agree that the employees at the Gatehouse Sub Office were less than helpful. That being said, I am sure they are constrained by what they can actually tell me and frankly because I'm the one that made the poor decision to drive impaired, I cannot expect anyone to cater to my situation. I'm just thankful for the opportunity to apply and better myself as a person. Thank you all - it's nice to hear (especially on this forum) that I am not being recriminized. Trust me, I've learned my lesson.

When I graduated college I worked as a sub. Those ladies are useless.
I was a sub doing the great recession so it was hard to find a subbing job so we had to call in, they were always pissed off...

Thanks, guys. The "orientation" is Dec. 13th - I'll post the reply when I get one to update effect of this sort of conviction in regards to FCPS hiring practices.
