I remember that plane crash well... I was a kid of about 12 at the time, and I was at an evening band practice, staring out the window (daydreaming during a boring passage of many measures of rests for the trumpet section!). Anyhow, suddenly I saw a ball of flames fall across the sky down behind the tree line. On the way home, in the car, we tuned in to the local news radio station and they were announcing that a plane had crashed in McLean. As I recall, this band practice may have been at Kent Gardens Elem in McLean.

Weird memory!

Actually, his name was Billy Viscidi.

Our school bus used to drive past his neighborhood (out by Nottaway Park near Nutley), and it was quite the topic of conversation for the boys on the bus (we were all 10 to 12 yrs old)...

This is crass, but I remember we would all sing "Pack up your brother in a Glad trash bag and smile, smile, smile...." Isn't that terrible? Young boys tend to loose all sense of decency, especially when trying to be "cool"!

The story I remembered hearing was-

a) Horseplay
b) The brother was smoked up on PCP ( I don't know if that was true or just anti-drug hype of the day.

I also remember hearing the parents helped bury the body because they didn't want the older osn to get in trouble. Had a little funeral and everything.

I feel bad for anyone who has to live with this on their mind.

I remember what got Horan going on the Viscidi case was that Fairfax County spent a large amount of money searching for the kid when everyone in the family knew he was in the back yard. Not that it was the greatest job of police work ever, but lots of people were scared about the disappearance of a child during the summer, not too long after the Lyon sisters and others had gone missing...

Did you know that one of those 5 killed was the son of one of the hostages held in Iran for 444 days during the Iran Hostage Crisis?

Morefield died at age 81 on October 11, 2010, in Raleigh, North Carolina due to pneumonia. He was survived by his wife, Dorothea, as well as by a daughter and four sons. His son Rick had been killed in 1976 by a gunman during a robbery of a Virginia restaurant.[2] Morefield recalled that the experience of dealing with the death of his son had given him greater strength to make it through the hostage crisis.[1]

Yes, that was Todd McKinney, very sad story. He was delivering his papaers early on a Sunday morning, and was looking at a nice car in a driveway. The owner was awake, saw a figure standing by his car, and armed himself with a shotgun. He says he fired because Todd had tried to open the driver's side door to look inside. Todd was an awesome kid, the student body president of our elementary school, someone every one looked up to. For years, I passed by the house where it happened and always thought of Todd.

In the 70's, the movie The Exorcist was considered too vulgar and sacreligious and was not shown in Fairfax County. Had to go to DC to see it. We went to the Uptown Theatre on Conn. Ave. Also remember that Va. had Blue Laws - only certain stores could open on Sunday, like pharmacies and such. The fine was $500 I think. Woodies decided to open on Sunday and just pay the fine. Said they made so much that the fine was nothing. And that was the end of the Blue Laws.

@Got Glock and BrandonGMU

I went to holy spirit on Braddock at the time of the suicide at Kings Park. Had us wait in the halls for hours before we could go home without telling us what happened...even though the hallways were all glass and we could see tons of police cars going by. They botched the timing for letting us leave and a lot of kids were treated to the crime scene on the way home with their parents.

Anyone else who attended the school at this time also remembers when a teenager from the picket area stole a friends family car and drove it into the school, bursting the water lines.

The snowstorm you are thinking of happened in 1982. That was the day the Air Florida plane hit the 14th street bridge in DC. I was on one of those busses and we had gone in late delay that morning and were let out at 1 pm. We didnt' get home until 7 pm that night. The elementary school kids never made it home.

THAT was the storm that forced FCPS to rethink their policies.

From what I understand, they didn't let him live, but shot him and left him for dead with the others. He would have died if he hadn't been put in the cooler/freezer which I guess slowed the blood loss until he was found. I wonder whatever happened to him.

About 20 years ago at the intersection of Rolling Road where the bridge today goes over the Fairfax County Parkway on the west side there was a ramp that came up to Rolling Rd. Larry Viscidi went on to college - he went to the same college as me - and he was a great student with almost perfect grades. Once the press left him alone, he had a reasonable life but when we were in college, he seemed very depressed. All of us who grew up in Vienna remembered who he was but we never mentioned the incident - he was a nice guy who panicked and made a mistake, so we just got past it.

I recall the 1968 Riots and burning of Washington, DC. As a young kid living in Arlington where we could see the top lights of the Washinton Monument, my parents took me out into the front yard and we could see the flames from Washington, DC.

I recall many in Arlington were very scared that things could get out of hand and spill over into the suburbs. Luckily things were contained mostly in DC.

Also recall a house at the GW Parkway and Rt 123 blew up one weekend very early in the morning, Could hear it 5+ miles away. Cannot seem to find much news info on this. I think it it was in the early 70's. I have a frined that lived about 2 blocks away and he recalls the event. Apparently some fued with a home contractor and non payment led to someone putting like 3 sticks of dynamite in the side of the house while the owners were home and asleep. As I recall nobody was hurt.

I am so, so sorry to hear this. I remember this case vividly, I was about 9-years-old at the time it happened. I followed it intensely and read newspaper articles about it. It was the first time I had ever heard about a child disappearing, and the first time I had ever heard about a child being killed. I felt so sorry for Billy, and then as I read the newspaper articles, I felt so sorry for Larry, too. It's amazing how this case has gripped so many people my age who grew up in the Metropolitan area at that time and have remembered it for so long. This was a very tragic incident, and I feel so sorry for the boy whose life ended too soon, and who didn't get a chance to grow up and experience his full life. I also feel so sorry for another boy whose life was forever changed by a tragic accident that he could not control, and the survivor's guilt that he has probably lived with ever since. And also the parents who never got the chance to see their son grow up to get married and other adult milestones that I'm sure they had once dreamed about for him. I hope the family was able to get counseling and piece things back together, somewhat.

During the mid to late 90's, there was a townhouse fire in the Burke neighborhood of Greenfield Farms. The guy was testing out a grill in his basement. One thing lead to another - fire!

We used to go swimming in a quarry off Georgetown Pike. We would park on the river side of the road where there was a white cross panel fence around shady dark green grass. It was where the road dips before going up to Madeira school, We’d hop the fence or run along side it, away from the road and into the woods where we’d find the path that took us to Black Quarry, I think? That sounds crazy. I wonder if it’s still there.

Not Weird but one of the saddest and tragic things I ever heard about in NOVA.

Two young girls were both turning 3 on the same day, they lived across from each other on Braeburn Drive near the intersection of Philadelphia Place. Not far from NOVA College. They were friends and they played together. On their birthday they were going to have birthday parties at each ones house. And both girls were going to be at each party. The mother of one had her little girl by the hand. They were in front of the other girls house for the first birthday party about to walk across the street. The door opened on the house and the other little girl came out on the porch, her friend slipped from her mothers hand and excitedly she ran into the street . She was hit by a car and died instantly at the sceen.

The car was driven by a young man about 21. He had some racing equipment on the car, loud pipes and he was going about 30 miles per hour, just a bit over the 25 MPH limit it was said by police, but there was no proof of his actual speed.

He had no time at all to stop and was not under the influence or drinking at all. As I remember he was questioned quite a bit as he had a "race type car" and he could have stood trial but I think no charges were filed in the end as it was a just such a tragic event. I go thru there time to time as I have for many years, and sometimes as I pass through I think of that girl and what a horrible thing it was for all of them. Theres a stop sign there now. It was not there for many years after this happened.

The two guys who robbed a bank and, when chased by police, committed suicide in the church parking lot behind what is now Pohanka Acura. That was many years ago, in the late 70's or early 80's I believe.

I remember everybody talking about Skylab falling back to Earth and would it strike Northern Virginia.

I was working for FCPS during the big sniper incident and we were told to walk the kids home. All I could think was, "Well, at least the sniper will have me out there for a bigger target."

I believe that was the same year that we had so much snow that school was extended for 30 minutes a day for a month and a half. Man, that wasn't nice.

IRT: the DC Snipers - I was nine months pregnant during the ordeal. My husband and I had just left the Home Depot the night the snipers killed someone there in the parking lot. We left the Home Depot and were shopping in the close by Buy Buy Baby when we heard sirens and a store emplyee told us what had happened.

I felt even more vulnerable and like such a huge target, especially at the gas pump during this time.

Since this is NoVA, I'd assume most of you hadn't seen this. Damn though, I remember seeing the wreckage after the plane crash in Virginia Beach. The place was practically off limits, with police cars surrounding the crash site. Tons of yellow tape and TV vans rushing past traffic. Smoke rose everywhere from the houses burned for hours after plane crash. I guess the firefighters had to be cautious...

As the DC Snipers kept on, it became scary to be in some places. I remember coming out of Wakefield Rec center. It was dusk and I thought the nearby woods were a place the snipers could hide. I hi tailed it to my car and saw kids just standing by the main doors like nothing was up. I wanted to yell at them to either get inside or get out to their car.

And the Texaco or Shell as it became on Rt 236 next to the 7-11 at Prosperity had the big blue tarp up over the gas pump area and got on National TV and I was glad they had that tarp up..

I was a student at Lake Braddock at the time of the McCreight incident. It was a Friday and all the roads to the school were closed and the school were locked down. It was also the day of the senior prom. Girls who had hair and dress appointments for that afternoon were not able to leave. Parents could not get to the school to pick them up. Boys needed to go pick up their tuxes but could not leave. Everyone was pissed big time. Hard to say, but everyone was kind of glad when it ended, without too much concern for how it ended. A tough day.

Not Fairfax County, but the thread is titled 'local incidents'...

I grew up on Seminary Road in Alexandria, and I remember when Scott O'Grady was shot down over Bosnia, and rescued after one week on the run in enemy territory. His parents lived on Seminary Road as well, and there were news trucks all over the place, and not just your local Pat Collins type (although I think he overdramatized a lost puppy dog on that same newscast).

He was a few years older than me, so not sure if he grew up at that house or if that's just where his folks ended up.

-Keep this thread going, it's brining back a lot of memories, just like the Old Pictures thread.-

I'm surprised nobody has brought up Dogwood Elementary in Reston burning down back in late 2000. It was one of the most destructive school fires FCPS had. The whole school was gutted by the time the firefighters were able to put out the fire.

This was a pretty big topic back in that time and they had to rebuild the whole school fro scratch. The new building is only 12 years old I think.

* a few people food tampering. two poisoning me to near death

* someone i didn't know beating me up for a reason i never heard of

* severe head injuries (hospitalization) by the public and by family - also broken tailbone

* being stalked by fx co gov workers - and police putting a gun to my head to go to court over matters never investigated

* total lack of any aid. stolen unemployment checks (ALL CHECKS STOLEN).

* Kaiser Permanente doctor(s) lying on medical report to cover up medical malfeasance - really fraud. they had for pill money about killed me. but also had "failed" to diagnose something they easily should have (they are legally bound to know of and be able to do). they DID NOT diagnose is simple: it would have costed the company money.

>> i'm now dying as a result. fx co va? are not helping. they are trying to kill me so one of their rat kids can jump in my chair when i die.

* being starved until my fingernails changed colors - and with permanent ill effects - ie organ failing

* family and or friends continually taking or breaking things - anything not tied down

* false prosecution with gun to head

* false imprisonment for > 30 days without even a trial

* denial of work when i was friendly and also the best for the job - continually (children of fx co gov workers, and rich foreigners doing spying here in DC, got the jobs)

* fx co gov stalking me in the workplace. always at a time when i have a few thousand in the bank - JUST AT THAT VERY TIME. always replaced by mexican. who would have guessed that from bull-o-va democrats ?

* judges putting a gun to my head to say nothing to my defense at trial. and that's AFTER skipping all procedures leading up to, and during the damn, trial

* harassed by family if i am seen or heard - continually until i leave

* harassed by police if i leave the house - i cannot get food and am facing serious organ problem, early death, due to their attacks on me

* while continually using courts to persecute me: the courts have never done any FAVORABLE law , so that i am compensated for any injuries. they only create injuries up myself for their benefit - is what they do with their weapons.

* stolen paychecks. by many of the bosses i've had

* less than min. wage pay for 40hr weeks even though many overtime hours worked - that weren't even counted.

* gov workers attacking the electronics i use - logging in to freak it so that their investments in Microsoft(china!!) do "better"

* today - continual mail harassment - false billing - including threats to steal my vehicles. by the "government".

* stolen plates - by gov workers - right off my car parked on my yard

* total lack of any aid. stolen unemployment checks (ALL). harassment by county workers on and after any visit concerning aid. (that while they are shoveling money at illegals literally)

* a continual threat of gov listening in my calls or feaking my electronics - or assholes using video equipment watching me if i go to a hotel (note i have holes in underwear - cannot afford hotel). a gov that will spend huge tax money (OPM) to find dirt on people so they can kill them off and replace them with (mexicans, family members)

* harassment by fx co teachers insulting me and downgradnign me for being disabled (i had hearing issues but no hearing aid. i was one of those people who in college had to tape certain classes that "had to be heard")

* continual harassement by fam. including harassing so that i cannot shower - i stink. this is something they tell others they don't do. but they do. they then use it to brag how great they are and how low i am. bastardards will not stop stalking me. they even hear me they are following me around. placing of things around to piss me off. very strategic. you'd be surprised what democrat sacks of shit can do if given wide legal breadth to do so: there are thousands of ways to torture a person who is at gunpoint has no choice.

* NVCC (college) scamming me in several ways - and creating situations to force me to retake classes i did well in. including siging a medical form a promising i would, for a semester at a doctors approval, be given "a break" - which they re-negged on and put 0's in my book and insisted i pay and retake the classes. hardly their only scam: book store, false parking ticks - the whole lot was a damn scam. fx co gov and other gov workers getting free schooling - then - giving each other certificates "to be qualifieid to up each other's pay".

hear of and seeing fraud everywhere in fairfax. all leading back to rich political families / gov workers who kill or steal or do anything to stay in power: including hiring of spies and for military agents using tax dollars - for kick backs.

2003 story from the Connection includes a few more details on the heinous crime...
My manager Mr. Gildea, ("Mr. G", from when I worked at the Roy Rogers at Rt 7/Rt50) was the nicest guy and was killed that night (at a different Roy Rogers on 236). He had a black belt in karate, but, tragically, decided to cooperate with rather than fight the murderer. It was so horrific -- I guess he could not imagine how much worse the outcome could be and was trying to keep everyone from getting hurt in a fight. I was a teen when it happened and, like everyone, was shocked such a terrible thing could happen at all--much less at a place I'd felt safe working at. In the article, the lawyer calls the survivor a "lucky girl" but she lost her husband that night and suffered 2 shots to her head...still makes me nauseous.

Roy Rogers Massacre

#The freezer of the Roy Rogers Restaurant on Little River Turnpike in Alexandria turned into a mass grave the night of March 6, 1976.

#The freezer also saved the life of Julie Nakpodia, who survived in spite of being shot twice in the brain.

#In November of 1976, Horan prosecuted James Leroy Breeden, 40 at the time of the crimes. A Fairfax County jury found him guilty of the largest mass killing in Fairfax history.

"We were just fortunate that the one girl survived. She got two bullets in her head and she survived it and wound up my witness"; Horan said, 27 years after the murders. "Doctors said that actually the cold of the refrigerator slowed up her metabolism enough that she was still alive when the doors were opened the next day. She was a very lucky girl."

#Between 12:30 and 1:45 a.m., Breeden ordered five people to the restaurant's walk-in freezer. There, he murdered Nakpodia's husband, Edward Nakpodia, 25, a divinity student, who was shot at least four times; Annandale resident Patrick Marcil, 22, a clerk for the FBI who suffered five gunshots to the head, thorax and abdomen; Anthony Dennis Gildea, 32, a manager for Marriott who was shot twice in the head; and Richard Moorefield, 19, a student who was also shot twice in the head.

#Julie Nakpodia was the only survivor.

#Breeden's lawyers requested that the case be moved outside Fairfax County because of pre-trial publicity surrounding the crime. The request was denied.

#More than 100 witnesses testified during the trial.

#Breeden was sentenced to four life terms in prison for the murders, life for the robbery, plus 20 years for the malicious wounding of Nakpodia.

#Breeden was not eligible for the death penalty since no executions took place in the United States from 1967-1976 while the United States Supreme Court considered cases that led to the invalidation of the death penalty statutes in 40 states in 1972. The first execution in the United States — as well as in Virginia — after modern death penalty laws were rewritten took place in 1977.

I remember the nutcase who shot an antitank round into the gas pump at the Texaco station on Columbia Pike in the early 80's.

He and another boob were driving in from WVa to show off a new antitank gun they "invented" to the Army in Crystal City/Pentagon, hoping for a big contract. On the way, they stopped for gas at the Texaco on Columbia Pike, and the driver went in for coffee. The other guy went into the back of the truck and pulled out the gun to fool around with. He popped in a round and accidentally fired the weapon right into a gas pump, which violently exploded into a mushroom cloud of flames.

I believe a woman was seriously injured and the station was closed for months.

He had nothing but they could not take a chance he would go somehere else and blow him self up with people around.

I remember on my job driving on Rt 1 at the hill at Beacon Mall toward the beltway I looked out at the monument expecting to see it blow at any moment.

I was in junior high when that homeless guy threatened to blow up the monument, I had ear buds running from my Walkman up my shirt, through the sleeve and into one ear, so I followed the whole event on the radio, wondering if we'd feel the rumble when it fell.

The ear bud trick was genius, it was impossible to get caught. If a teacher called on me I just straightened my arm and it was hidden. I recently found out from a high school principal that they catch kids doing that all the time now.

Damn, seriously? Google didn't bring up much else. I'd love to know more about that.
