HS Football Coaching Carousel
Posted by: The Future ()
Date: November 09, 2017 08:27AM

This looks like a topic that should have it's own thread. So here we go...

What changes will happen/should happen in the area this off-season?

Will Counts keep the Madison job, or does he even want it?

Will Poythress make a re-appearance? What schools would be a good fit for him?

Talk among yourselves.

After a pathetic 0-10 season the year after firing longtime coach Mike Lalli, I believe it is safe to say that Sean Curry will be fired from Chantilly.

No way they fire Curry 1 year in...he will get 1 more year

Oakton needs a new coach...but can they get someone good to go there

My other guesses for places that will need new coaches...

Wakefield
Madison(will the interim keep the job?) he has done great, but will he stay
Yorktown(how long will that Coach stay)
TC... rumor is he tried to leave last year, they had a good year-bet he tries to go somewhere again

I wouldn't be surprised to see the TC coach try to go elsewhere. He seems to be a very good coach, but that's a hard place to win consistently.

What about the coaches who applied for the LB job last year but didn't get it? The only ones I know of were the WestPo and Falls Church coaches. Do you think they will try to leave those schools, or was that just too good a job to pass up?

Maybe Polythress can take the Oakton job. They can't risk their program on someone who's untested. Heck, if Polythress can recruit some South Lakes kids to go to Oakton, maybe they can become competitive again! Ten years ago, many of those South Lakes would have gone to Oakton. Of course, that was before redistricting.. . .

Will Aziz finally leave Falls Church? I know he interviewed for the Braddock job last year. Falls Church finished 6-4 this year, not as good as prior seasons.

We need stronger programs at the Youth Level. Consider coaching Youth which is where it all starts.

The County League could use more good coaches.
Also, keep dispelling the myths put out by the media, which misrepresent the facts about the sport. The numbers are hugely skewed and causing fear for the Moms and Dads out there. Be an advocate for telling the Truth about the concussion, CTE debate.

The numbers reported are not put into proper perspective, but are being rawly reported without consideration of the great majority of players who are not affected.

HEY BUDDY! I don't TINK SO!!!!! I believe the school board knows where Karl & I work. They certainly know where we are during "Lunch Time," that would be Chick-Fil-A or 5 Guys both in Burke. You would think if they want us, they would grab us @ 1 of those 3 places. Or perhaps they could catch us in The Mosaic district for most evenings @ Happy Hour & usually a couple of our buddies from Gate House across the street are pounding drinks and scarfing down Wings & apps. Actually Karl shut down the kitchen last week, ABSOLUTELY as true as the day is long. Well that was before day light savings.
I gotta run as shots and mini burgers just got here, and I need at least 1 before Karl scarfs them all.

What schools have under-performed the past few seasons?

TC? Hayfield? Robinson?

Not saying these have, but I could see an argument for each.

How about schools that should have potential, but regularly struggle. Such as Annandale, Lee, and Edison?

-He is a GREAT coach that gets more out his players than anyone else. He should have gotten the Woodson job.

RE:We need stronger programs at the Youth Level. Consider coaching Youth which is where it all starts.

-We have 50% less Ankle biters than we had seven years ago. There uses to be 7-8 divisions. There were four this season Vienna barely got to two teams of 13. BRYC, FPYC, and ABGC only had one team. CYA and SYA only had two. While Vienna was strong in higher weight classes, this will start to end. BRYC and/or FPYC/ABGC should merge. The biggest clubs in FCYFL at the lower weights come from loudoun and Prince William counties now. The coaching has not gotten worse. It’s a numbers game. And “Heads Up Football” is a joke.

BRYC fielded 10 total teams this year. AB 1, ; 80 1 ; 90 2 ; 100 3 ; 115 1, 130 1 ; 155 1 .

Annandale couldn't field at some levels and players either didn't play or went to other clubs.

FPYC had trouble fielding at a level or 2 as well.

I could see the logic in merging BRYC with FPYC but it would take cooperation between the 2 clubs which I don't see happening.

It would happen through attrition. The problem is Coaches hold out until the last minute trying to field a team and when they can't the other clubs have already begun practicing. When the low numbers cause a fold of a team, many of these players won't play anywhere and that makes it worse.

Better for coaches to reach out early to assist another club then to wait.

The Heads-up program is not a joke. It isn't the silver bullet to fix the decline, but it does some good.

The joke is clubs whose coaches don't give a crap about teaching safe playing as in NOT leading with the helmet. The refs don't seem to call this much either -- I only saw it called a few times this past season.

Football hasn't changed. The culture has. We live in a boo boo culture where Johnny can't be on the trampoline without a helmet or where pools take out diving boards because of 1 idiot kid who wants to run off the high dive with his eyes closed.

There have always been injuries in every sport, including football and always will be. There are also way more players who've played through the professional LEVEL (NFL, CFL, Etc.) who go on and live normal lives, unaffected by CTE and Concussion's latent effects.

Way MORE!

The problem is we aren't hearing that news story and neither are the parents.

Enough said.

Have a good season next year coach!

--- HUF has done more the hurt youth football than anything. It scares parents into thinking if their kid doesn't follow the exact HUF steps, they will be paralyzed or killed. It's not even teaching a solid technique. One of the problems with coaching right now is so many good old boys who have been doing it for years are still running the clubs and coaching. This keeps new blood from getting involved and excited. It also leads to a lot of legacy kids playing, and new kids sitting, or playing the line. I understand BRYC is really bad about this. ABGC needs better funding. FPYC is apparently also having leadership issues.

No way that job opens. SoCo was not very good before he got there, but has been dominant since his arrival. He'll at least get another year. If not more.

On the SoCo topic, anyone know what happened this year? I know they had a rough schedule, but losing to WTW? There had to be something below the surface.

Completely agree. The most overrated, hyped team that fell flat 2years in a row after losing to WHS. The only team that had a more disappointing season than Centreville. SOCO had a huge team and skilled/athletic kids every skill position.
Why did they pull the Tull kid, did he get hurt or performance benching? Kinda sucks for him after coming from Manassas school.

Coach Aziz does a good job at FC, however, they really don't play a very strong schedule. It is a lot different playing Centreville, Westfield, SoCo every week as opposed to Wakefield, Stuart, W&L and the likes. Going 6-4 , 7-3 against that competition, then getting killed in the playoffs, when the teams are much better, hasn't helped him.

If he wants to move to the next level of HS he should have looked at the lower tier positions that come open, such as a Woodson or now maybe Oakton.
If he shows he can win there, then he will get the opportunity at the better schools, if and when they come open.

No way Braddock was going to hire him.
I think him not having experience at the larger school level HS has hurt him.

I can see the emphasizing something to buffer injuries can get parents to focus on the injury and play into their fear.

What needs to be done is to
Keep practicing proper techniques
and not talk about them so much ... (I think you are correct)

Basically "Keep your head up" and "don't lead with the helmet" are the basic 2 things to keep kids safe.

The other side of it is Football is not "safe" and neither is soccer, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, baseball or riding a bicycle.

Perspective is needed.

Where I coach, emphasis is getting the kids to have a quality experience which means having fun too. This gets them to return and sign up the following season.
Coaching style can do more for the sport than anything else at this point.

If you are one to Yell, but not encourage when a player does the right thing, then that player won't see football as worth doing the following season.

A kid will tire of playing line the whole time at the youth level, year after year.

If a team is winning by a lot, a good coach will move players around or if a team is down beyond being able to win the game in the 4th, the coach ought to move players around to give linemen a chance at the ball ... "where the weight rules will allow" Of course.

Bottom line is that we can talk High School Ball all day long, but if Youth League doesn't change, then HS ball is what will suffer further.

BTW I believe ABGC SHOULD merge with BRYC IMO.

I think your spot on with everything here.

Didn't ABGC separate from BRYC a few years back?

When I last coached in FCYFL, a couple of years ago, we always seemed to have the game before one of the older BRYC teams. Seems like it was the 115's - 155's. Every time they played they had a coach who would just scream and berate the players and officials. I mean it was really ugly, not the normal tough coach stuff. I talked to one of the parents who said that's how all of the BRYC coaches were. That's why they were losing players.

Poythress would be silly to go to Oakton. Anybody who wants that job should beware. They don’t know what they are walking into. The school also starts renovations in January. 3-4 years of upheaval, no principal in the building, and no talent on the field. Good luck- Pythress deserves better

They had heads up tackling correct a couple years ago but for some reason they decided to change it this year. It's not heads up tackling, it's ARM TACKLING. It's seriously the exact opposite of how we've taught tackling for the past decade. It's wrong! You won't make the tackle if try and tackle that way and in my opinion, it will get more kids hurt. It's having the players get their heads down by the knees... Now I don't know about everyone else, but I've seen more concussions from a knee to the head or the head bouncing off the ground than I have seen head to head contact (I'm talking about youth) Anyone who coaches youth and had to sit through those damn USA Football cert videos know exactly what I mean. The new HUF will be the death of football.

The hawk tackle isn't bad but we did not emphasize it because it takes a lot to learn it and we have limited time.
The old fashion form tackle is what I always used back in the day and it is SAFE. Just keep head up and avoid head to head as much as possible and you're good.

The USA Football Cert. is kind of a pain, but at least they modified it so you can pick up where you left off (progress bar).

I think the only way to rebound from this disaster is coaches treating their players well ... meaning organized practices, teach, praise what they do well or when they correct themselves .. but NEVER leave the hanging after be yelled at .. ALWAYS restate things and leave them with a positive vibe so that they feel the desire to continue to learn and grow with the team.

My first year playing was in HS school. My JV coach embarrassed me in front of my teammates but he knew I wouldn't give up. That was the challenge I needed and always knew this guy had my best interest in mind. He challenged us but always praised our accomplishments too.

BE POSITIVE. COACH POSITIVE.

My kid was one that team, and Tim wasn't the coach. Yes, Tim is a dick, but he's not the LAX coach. I think this is the guy you're talking about.

http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/1114884/page-1.html

The LAX coach never physically abused any kids, but he did shove them out of the way several times. It wouldn't have been an issue if he wasn't such an absolute ass to everyone. BRYC as an organization refused to do anything about this guy. They conducted "an investigation" into him, then let him keep coaching. The coaching committee were friends of his, so nothing was going to happen. He finally quit when BRYC couldn't kick a kid off the team because the coach got into it with his crazy ass mom. It was the worst situation I have ever seen in youth sports.

That year at least, there were several coaches who were loud and spewed profanity at the kids on a regular basis. When I would go to my kids practice, you could hear it coming for 3 or 4 groups. I know parents complained to the commissioner and deputy commissioner, but nothing was ever done. BRYC is the definition of the classic "ole boys club."

I knew that coach, Players will shut down if someone yells that much.
We had another like him, be I heard he moved on too.
There's a difference between just yelling and yelling but following up with a positive.

Players will leave a program if they leave practice with the false feeling that they can't improve or can't "get anything right."

I think you are talking about a coach who DID get fired. I coached with BRYC when that happened. The said coach and one discussed in the link got into a dispute with a player's mother and let indecent words fly. He WAS in fact FIRED.

Not sure what is meant by "good ole boys" club. Braddock Road does have coaches who have been coaching for a long time. They are Good coaches and care about their players.

The few YELLERS who shout down their players and don't reaffirm them are gone.
There was another longtime coach, who had been coaching for years who was forced to put up with a disgruntled "dad coach" who didn't like the position his son was playing. Because other "dad coaches" wanted to run the show, this experienced coach gracefully bowed out.

It takes a self centered "dad coach" to mess things up sometimes.

Instead of teaching by example the follow the head coach's lead, they want to install stupid plays and schemes behind the Head's back, even during games.

If you cannot follow you cannot lead.

BTW, all those assistants from the team are gone, but 2 who continued on with a different coach this season who was able to bring stability.

Not all Dad coaches are bad, in fact nearly all coaches in Youth sports start out being Dad Coaches.

If there is a break down in order or assistants are going rogue, or self-centered parents' who want to shove their kids to the front of the line, then the Head Coach is to keep order. Beyond that it's the Commissioner.

There needs to be a protocol IMO of dealing with problem coaches and problem parents. Better to lose a player, then to lose many.

Nip it in the bud. AND it is just youth sports ... the over reactors won't stay long.

Eric is not the coach I was talking about. He did get done in because of one mom. He bowed out. Comish let him go on for years like that and even coached lax for him.

I was talking about Tim. At least Eric could coach. He could be a dick but the results speak for themselves.

Is this thread on high school coaches or youth league guys?

Yes I know Eric and Tim. Both were good x and o coaches with good strategies.
Tim was great at meetings and reading his opponents.
Eric coached the game well and had his heart in it .. maybe a little too much at times, but he was fun to be around and had a great sense of humor -- made everyone laugh.

I don't like judging too much but I will say that a good coach is both organized and can relate and bring out the best in players and I do not claim to be very good at either, but I am learning.

We have had a hard time at the Youth level and I appreciate any one who volunteers their time to teach kids football.

Hoping that the League can recover and that all clubs focus on good coaching, recruiting and coaching so that Both Parents and players are excited to participate and continue on in the World's greatest sport.

It has been a pleasure and also very humbling to teach (coach) football.
Let's grab a coffee or lunch sometime.

I'll hit you up sometime, if I figure out who this is -- haha

-Longsuffering Youth Coach :)

The youth guys should probably start their own thread, but I don't mind.

If I were Oakton I’d use the Centreville/PWC method. Hire a youth coach or coach with youth connections. Recruit like crazy and win games. No one is getting punished, and they could be good next year. I’d rather cheat than suck!!

That's great. I agree with the Youth coach idea. Anyway whoever it is, he's got some good players coming up from Youth League.

You must be new around here cuz VYI feeder programs success has had zero correlation to Oakton and MAdisons success. See VYI recruits players at all weight classes to come play for them. Also in the upper weight classes they stack their rosters with kids who ahould be playing Hs ball (9th & 10th graders playing against 7th & 8th graders) instead they play VYI and play both ways than sit the bench at high school. So good luck with your “plan”

I guess if you can win at Falls Church you can win anywhere.

Is he putting his name in the hat, or are other recommending him? I saw somewhere the outgoing Oakton coach recommended him.

False. Most of Madisons varsity team played together in vyi. Same with some Oakton players like their starting running back. He played vyi in middle school then ended up starting on varsity his freshman year. Do you research bud

What is it about Herndon and Oakton that make it so hard to win? The answer you always here is demographics, but Oakton is very similar to Madison, and Herndon similar to South Lakes. I also hear the two good schools steal the better players, but it that entirely accurate? Are there some great players coming out of SL and Madison I have been missing? Is it really a situation with players, or did SL and Madison just happen to end up with better coaching?

Along those lines, any chance any of the Westfield assistants leave for a HC job? I know a lot of them have been HC's before, but are there any who might be interested in trying it again? I think we can all agree the staff at Westfield has something figured out, why not share it throughout the district. Do admins at schools with opening's even reach out and ask those guys if there are interested?
