Turns out Jiffy Lube is the best place in the USA to get your oil changed
Posted by: mekhanic ()

A study has shown that Jiffy Lube changes more oil with a higher degree of accuracy than anyone else. They are far better than anyone, even diy people that change their own oil. So, for the very best oil change go to Jiffy Lube every single time.

I have used Jiffy lube since the 80s. Over the course of 2 million plus miles they did 95% of my oil changes. Perfect every time.

Changing your own takes 10 minutes...

1) Warm up engine to promote flow.
2) Place drip pan below oil drain.
3) Loosen and remove oil drain plug. Once all oil is out, replace plug.
4) Remove oil filter. Dip your finger in fresh oil and rub oil on new filter's gasket. Install new oil filter.
5) Pour new oil into engine. Close oil fill cap.
6) Start engine, check oil level on dipstick. Add oil, if necessary.
7) Take old oil to gas station for disposal.

Yeah, with the $35,000 or so which I have invested in my car, I don't think I will be bringing it to a 17 year old pimply faced kid who dropped out of high school to pursue auto mechanics.

Call me a skeptic, but I also don't think that when I ask them to put Mobil 1 in the car that it is actually Mobil 1 that's poured into the engine.

Therefore, I prefer to do it myself. Then, I know that the drain plug has been re-installed properly and the correct amount of oil put in the car.
It's worth a half an hours work twice a year for the peace of mind.

Has anybody else heard horror stories about these quick oil change places causing engine damage by leaving the drain plug only hand tight and it wriggles off a few miles down the road?

While I appreciate the local Jiffy Lube manager for posting the OP to boost his business some, I will still opt to do it myself.

Or they stick a rubber plug in the drain hole because they A) stripped the drainplug threads, or B) it makes it quicker the next time they do an oil change. Back in the 80's we would take company trucks to that quick oil change place. When I found out they put rubber plug in place of the drain plug I found a reliable gas station to do the oil change.

My boss took his Audi A8 in for an oil change. This car has a thin plastic shield under the block. There are fasteners all around the perimeter.

The 17 year old pimply faced kid took a sawz-all to the shield to cut it away so he would have access to the oil drain plug. They paid to have a new shield installed...but only after my boss pointed out to the cashier what they did.

I had Valvoline instant oil change do the oil and filter on my FJ cruiser that I use to tow my camper and boat. They double gasketed the oil filter and my wife drove it halfway home before the motor seized. They said my wife was partially to blame because she did not stop driving it soon enough. They offered a used engine from a junkyard for replacement. They said that was fair because the engine that was lost was a used engine. I had to pay the difference between a used engine and a Toyota remanfuctured engine. It was not enough money to bother with a lawsuit but I think it was abour 1200 bucks. I change my own oil now.
The people who work at those quick change oil places are ex-cons and high school dropouts.

Fuck Jiffy Lube.

They bring out your air filter and rave about how dirty it is - even if you installed it two blocks ago.

Back in the 80's I let those fuckers flush my radiator. Two miles down the road it bubbles over and the whole thing overheats and goes to hell. They didn't know how to flush it. Nearly $1,000 in damages. Never taking anything back to them ever again.

Fascinating article about synthetic oil that never once mentions Jiffy Lube. They are good at tightening your oil bolt to 2000 lb-ft until it fuses with the oil pan - good stuff.

They put an incorrect oil filter on my car once back in the 90s. A fellow customer flagged me down as I was leaving to alert me that oil was leaking out from under the car. Last time for me at jiffy screw.

Also ruined a drain plug trying to get it off after some other quickie place cranked it on way too tight as another poster mentioned.

Jiffy lube has some human errors but overall it is the best place to get your oil changed period.

buy a topsider from amazon-$40
Never go under a car to drain oil.
Drain it by sticking the tube in the dipstick and pump the apparatus.
Once all the oil is pumped out, stretch your monkey ass under the car and spin off the oil filter!
No mess!
My car is approx 4.5 quarts. Walmart sells 5qts of 5w30 for $13! Filter is additional $3.
Personally know 4 people that had the drain plug left off the car and now they have Jasper motors in their cars.

Plus, jiffy lube is over $50 for the same car that costs me $18 in oil and filter.
Top sider pays for itself the first oil change you use it on.
I also use topside to change trans fluid AND REAR differential fluid.
Jiffylube is low IQ stoners making $9/hr. If you have a $30k + car and goto jiffy lube, you’re a bigger moron than the stoner underneath your car.

I've always heard that removing the oil from the top was bad because it leaves the worst of it at the bottom of the sump. Which makes sense (but that doesn't mean it's true). Mind you, I've also heard that many quick oil change places also do topside removal. Dunno about JL.

The quick lube places aren't going to sit there till every last bit of oil is out anyways, 45 - 60 seconds to drain and then your drain bolt goes back on.

it's pretty obvious: jiffy lube has a longer history than anything of: CORRUPT PRACTICES, HIGH PRICES, cars damages and leaking oil due to untrained workers over-filling the dip stick

When I pump my machine 10-11x, nothing but black nasty oil fills the tube instantly!
After 3mins, I pump it again 10x, and just like the dental hygienist w the vacuum, I begin to slowly pull the tube outta the dipstick until I hear a sucking sound, then I slowly slide it back in until oil fills the tube again. All in all, I’ll repeat this technique until I hear the sucking sound from wayyyyy Down in the dipstick.
I get zero oil on my hand spinning off the filter.
On bothe my mercedes, the filter is accessable with Opening the hood(top of the motor).
Topside holds about 5 quarts so I dump the waste oil before each car.
I can change 2 trucks, 2 benzs and a Toyota 4 cylinder in less than 1hr if I’m hustling it.
That’s awesome

Dude, I am *not* trying to pick a fight--just trying to discuss this topic. So please don't get upset!

I'm sure what you say is true. I think the real test would be to do a full drain from the bottom, refill with a precise amount, drive for a day or two, and then do your top drain and see what you get.

I'm willing to believe that the access *is* good enough, and that you essentially get it all, at least on some vehicles (it beggars imagination that all would have equally good access to the bottom of the sump from the dipstick).

But it would still be interesting.

And one might wonder if the nastiest stuff doesn't collect at the bottom of the sump, so even if you get all but a few tablespoons, you might leave the worst.

OTOH, modern engines are pretty darned clean. Not like the old days, where you'd buy a new car, drain the oil after 50 miles, and find shavings in it. So maybe it doesn't even really matter, provided you're using the right oil and not running it for years at a crack.

I change my own oil sometimes but it takes me more than 10 minutes to get the ramps and tools out of my shead and place them in the driveway. Your estimate of 10 minutes for a complete oil change at home is complete bullshit. I think it is a minimum of 28 minutes and that does not include buying the oil and recycling the used oil.
As far as topside oil changes, they are better than nothing but topside oil draining procedure is not approved buy most major auto manufacturers. It just makes no sense to use the topside method, it's just stupid and lazy.

I drive a 4WD pickup and my house has a garage. I don't need ramps and all my tools, oil and filter are right there on my storage shelves. An oil change takes me 10 minutes.

Walmart does all my oil changes on the 3 vehicles I own. I use walmart brand "supertech" oil and it costs like 25 bucks for the whole procedure. If they are busy we just leave the vehicle there on Saturday morning and pick it back up in the afternoon. Never had a problem and never had a engine failure in 15 plus years. A few times they have been out of walmart oil and they use what the fuck ever brand they have in stock. All oils are pretty much the same and synthetic oil is a waste of money.

while you buttplugs were looking at NSFW porn, I changed my oil on my Dodge Ram using the topsider!
Few observations:
1. Get that oil temp to at least 200. I only went to 130-150 and I just spent 1hr pulling out 5 quarts!
Previous owner was just adding oil AND NEVER CHANGED IT.

2. Dipstick is curvy like a broken penis, and the inlet tube did not work as well as my corolla.

3. Unless poster has NASCAR PIT CREW EXPERIENCE(bragged about doing 5 cars in less than an hour w topsider), I’m calling bullshit!

4. Hose design needs a redesign!

Now go back to fapping!

That is more than 10 minutes unless you live next to gas station and drive a monster truck. You'll need to jack up your vehicle to get underneath.

Stock F-150 4WD...I slide right under it with no ramps and the drain plug is easily accessible. Again...10 minute oil change.

Told them to just do the signature service and that will be all. The kid said I might not make it home before the car blows up. Fuck them, I am never going back. They try to ripoff senior citizens.

I went to jiffy one time ONLY.

The sale was explained as not available to me because (bullshit excuse) - the price was overpriced more expensive than a dealership.

The attendant overfilled the oil, which i had to correct later.

The attendant was from DC not fairfax: said I needed an air filter which i'd just changed days earlier - perfectly clean and white still. I told the attendant this and he began telling me I don't know what I'm talking about and if I didn't agree to have it changed I'd have to speak to the manager. the nigga was threatening me nakedly.

Call it coincidence or what ever but each time I have taken a car to jiffy lube within weeks something major has gone wrong with my car. I now only take my cars to the dealership I bought my car from. No issues have occurred within 10 years of doing so.

You are better off going to Jiffy Lube than using a topsider. I tried a topsider and found that that method leaves 27% more contaminants behind on everage in the fresh oil compared to the traditional method. I tried it both ways on several different vehicles and had the new oil checked by a lab after 300 miles.
Topsiders are for lazy, ignorant people.

Well, now, see, that's the kind of data that would be useful--if it were (a) presented with supporting evidence and (b) by someone who was trying to be helpful, not just pissy. As neither of those applies, it gets ignored.

I have a buddy who is an auto mechanic that claims that the topside method is not a good idea but I own a cheap extractor and I sure do love the convenience of it on a cold winter day oil change. It is true that the topside drain method is not embraced by the automotive industry but that does not mean that it is bad. My truck also has the oil filter located on the top of the engine so using the topside method makes for a incredibly easy oil and filter change.

Who even gives a fuck about oil changes? Are you people so poor that you even concern yourselves with this shit? The little light comes on in the car and you get the oil changed by some shop or gas station, jiffy lube or whatever, it really doesn't matter! It's just a fucking vehicle, it's not like you are picking out a doctor to perform surgery on you. Fucking losers!

By the time that “little light” comes on, you have damage to your motor.
Factor in a 10+ yr old car, those lights become unreliable.
Call me poor, but I check my oil level every time I fill up gas. This way I can gauge the next step...
I wouldn’t use jiffy lube if the charged $10 for filter and oil change-there are fixed costs associated with oil changes, and costs must be met.
I have a 317k mile subaru and never used jiffy lube.
I may not be an expert that is SAE certified etc, but WVERY time I drive one of cars, I know that it’s in good shape!

Topsider NOT getting out ALL the oil??
Weigh that against stripped drain plug, absent crush washer, and those that don’t know how to use a torque wrench-yeah, I’ll stick to my Topsider

Better check you lease agreement smart boy. Even with a lease you are REQUIRED to do scheduled oil changes.

Some automobile manufacturers include scheduled oil changes for the first 24 months, so you still need to take the time to get them done.

Otherwise you will pay a additional fees when you turn in your Chrysler 300

Thanks for that information friend. I am truly sorry about your life turning out like this. I know it's a little bit of a waste of money but I enjoy getting a nice new car every 4 or 5 years. Sometimes I will keep my old car a little longer and get a low mileage lease on a car I really enjoy driving. With a second car I can make sure I don't go over on the leased car mileage.
You should treat yourself once in awhile if you can afford it. Nowadays the dealership does all the oil changes for no extra charge.

Lexus in the early 2000’s offered FREE schedules maintenance to lure buyers from Mercedes, BMW, Audi.
Then, the Germans followed suit.... AND suddenly they were losing out on the $400+ REVENUE for required transmission service. So, to make up for this shortfall, they lied and said trans fluid was good for 100k miles(which is disastrous).

Look on Craigslist(any city), and you will find these ONCE $40k + cars, with LIMP mode transmissions(transmission not working).

I drain and fill my auto trans every 30k Miles. I do an “infinity drain.” I drain a quart, then add a quart of FRESH, make-specific trans fluid. After 3 weeks, I’m running new trans fluid.
Takes some time to do this process, but I work for a living and don’t have $2k for a new tranny.

Hope this helps

That sounds stupid. I am 48 years old and had a bunch of different cars and trucks and drove them on long commutes as well as cross country. I have never had a transmission service or even checked the trans fluid. I never had one single transmission problem. Best thing to do is leave it alone.

Well, that's certainly a reasonable concern. And given how much cleaner engines are nowadays, it would make me consider using a topsider.

I think I would still want to measure the amount pulled out to be sure I thought it was getting most of the oil on my particular vehicle. I still suspect (with no hard evidence) that some vehicles will not lend themselves to that method.

What about in an automatic transmission vehicle if the transmission takes longer to switch gears than usual (e.g. gears should downshift but it is taking longer than usual)?

My car's been doing that lately and thought a transmission flush might be a good idea

Seems like most of the big stealerships give you free oil changes, state inspections and tire rotations for life. I recently bought a semi-beater Honda civic for my kid to take to college and they gave me the free oil changes on that cheap-o 5000 dollar car. I know they will try and up sell all kinds of extra stuff when we go in for free oil changes but I have sales resistance.

Valvoline instant oil change is perfect while Jiffy lube totally sucks.

Some tractor-trailers are doing just fine with 100,000 mile oil change intervals with full synthetic motor oils. Just a few oil filter changes and a few quarts added along the way.

Jiffy lube changes 44% of the oil in the USA. That is more than any other company by far. Due to human error they pay to replace an average of two motors per week nationwide. They change more oil with a higher degree of accuracy than anyone else and that includes do-it-yourselfers.

I stopped going to Jiffy Lube because they do not offer recycled oil. Valvoline instant oil change does offer it. It is much better for the environment. The Valvoline nextgen oil is 50% recycled used oil.

IF YOUR A CAR IDIOT (not a paid mechanic) do this:

* use only the dealership (always same one) for all service

* oil changes do NOT cost more than jiffy they are LESS

* they keep maintenance, failure, and suggested replacement records

* if a "mechanic" (all untrained mexicans now) breaks your car or your car breaks a year later: THE DEALER IS RESPONSIBLE

it is still the law/tradition that if you only ever use the same dealership and have a mechanic created problem that the dealer WILL FIX IT FREE. all that's required is your smart enough to realize if they fixed A and A broke again (or that they damaged B when replacing A) to bring it up with the manager as they're responsibility to fix.

- if you use various service places the tradition is "screw you, we didn't break it the other place did". you can't get around that unless you _really_ know your way around the business and keep records and such. this is especially true if your engine is damaged due to over-filling the oil: they are going to say another place over-filled and you can't prove which oil change caused the damage.

That is some tremendously ignorant advice. It has been proven time and time again that Jiffy lube does the highest quality job of changing oil in the entire world. And yes it is proven that the Jiffy Lube signature service oil change is better and in the long run cheaper than changing your own oil.

If you are in the market for a used car keep an eye out for used cars that have been serviced at Jiffy lube because those will be the best maintained vehicles. Avoid purchasing any vehicle that has had oil changes done by the vehicle owner. It has been proven time and time again that amateur oil changes damage the vehicle 88.7% of the time.

You must be a Jiffy Lube employee because this is total B.S.

Fact, the majority of new model vehicles require 0 weight oil, it's a synthetic blend. I have yet to find a Jiffy Lube that carries this, so an oil change on my 2015 Acura is $89.95 because I have to use full synthetic since Jiffy Lube doesn't offer 0 weight.

The local dealer charged $54.25, they also had me in and out in 41 minutes and provided me with a comprehensive multi-point filled out by an actual technician, not someone with minimal mechanical aptitude such as those employed at Jiffy Lube.

Does Jiffy Lube still tell people to change their oil every 3000 miles? Even the cheapest oil can go at least 10,000 miles these days.

Oil chemistry and engine technology have evolved tremendously in recent years, but you'd never know it from the quick-change behavior of American car owners. Driven by an outdated 3,000-mile oil change commandment, they are unnecessarily spending millions of dollars and spilling an ocean of contaminated waste oil.

The majority of automakers today call for oil changes at either 7,500 or 10,000 miles, and the interval can go as high as 15,000 miles in some cars. Yet this wasteful cycle continues largely because the automotive service industry, while fully aware of the technological advances, continues to preach the 3,000-mile gospel as a way to keep the service bays busy. As a result, even the most cautious owners are dumping their engine oil twice as often as their service manuals recommend.

After interviews with oil experts, mechanics and automakers, one thing is clear: The 3,000-mile oil change is a myth that should be laid to rest. Failing to heed the service interval in your owner's manual wastes oil and money, while compounding the environmental impact of illicit waste-oil dumping.

Most County owned diesel trucks (including school buses and firetrucks) are getting oil changes at 10,000 to 12,000 mile intervals with no ill effects. This has been going on for over 7 years.

The amount of miles between oil changes is not solely dependent on the weight or brand of oil you use. Just because Walmart's oil says on it's good for 100,000 miles. Most cars built in the last 10 years have an oil change indicator on the dash. On older, cheaper cars this is just a light off a switch wired to the odometer. On newer, more expensive cars the car's computer takes into account how hard the engine is run.

But, the best way to know when to change the oil...Check your owner's manual. Every car has a specific, manufacturer recommended mileage interval for changing the oil.

!0,000 is the new 3,000.

There is no difference between the different brands of oil. NAPA oil is just as good as Royal Purple, walmart oil is just as good as Mobil 1.

That is an oil can spear/spigot. When oil came in cans, you drove the spear down the edge of the can through the seam at the top and then poured the oil into your engine. Protip: It was also helpful to take a church key can opener and make a small puncture opposite where you drove the spear in to provide positive airflow and avoid the dreaded glug which would send oil all over your engine block.

Time is also a factor, especially with non-synthetic oil, which becomes acidic over time. Even if the car is sitting in the garage it's a good idea to change the oil ever 6 months and preferably drive it hard for 30-60 minutes to heat soak the engine and drive moisture out of the brake system.

And it's worth finding out how to reset the "oil change needed" light yourself even if you don't change it yourself (Google is your friend here). Otherwise if you ever have it changed *before* the light comes on, you'll be out of sync and then when it does come on, it won't mean anything. IOW, if you have it changed before the light comes on, make sure to reset it yourself afterward.

Jiffy lube is the best place to get oil changes. You should also buy any additional services they recommend.
