So let me get this straight, the starting fare from Fairfax County and other points south into DC on the VRE is $7.65 one way? LOL

The one way starting price is $7.65 and up if you live further south?

When did the prices get so high?

Only $2.35 away from being a $10.00 one way fare.

That is SAD.

At least it's a better deal then Metro. Parking at most VRE lots is free, and the ride is soooo much better. Wider seats. Passengers that behave. Totally different from Metro.

Roundtrip Metro ride and parking are about $15 a day.

I wonder if I can charge people $10 each way to go from Warrenton to DC and back?

You could, but you wouldn't be making money.
A decent van used would be around $22K. New $35k.
If you get exactly 15 people every trip (not gonna happen) that's only $300/day
$1500/k a week. Then you have to take out gas (roughly $14/day), maintenance, commercial liability insurance, car payment.

There's a reason transit is expensive.

When VRE was being developed someone told me the goal was to set prices so they would get the most revenue while running nearly full trains and getting a good spread of riders from Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford. Since VRE doesn't own the tracks they don't have the ability to keep adding trains to pull more cars off the road or to maximize the use of their equipment. Cutting fares would not bring more riders to the trains. It could encourage riders from Stafford and Prince William to fill the cars in the morning leaving seats unavailable for Fairfax riders, and in the evening it could encourage too many Fairfax riders leaving no seats for those going further out.

There are almost no nogs on the VRE. I ride it 3 times a week. In the morning, there's two that regularly ride my car. No spics at all. The conductors are mostly black, but they're no nonsense with the nogs, unless they're sheboons. The conductors love the sheboons.

Lies. It takes 10 minutes to make it out to neighborhood. Unless you work a Burke Lake Park picking up trash, you ain't making it anywhere around here in 15 minutes that has a high paying job from Fairfax Station. No way.

You would average maybe 10 passengers per trip, so $200 a day or about $150 after expenses. You could uber once you're in D.C for a little more money.

I'll look into it and report back. I can buy a brand new 15 passenger BUS with large seats for $67,900. I wouldn't need a CDL license with that.

Sorry bud but I can make it to my office in 15 minutes. I don't live dead in the center of the neighborhood in FFX STATION. In less than a minute I'm on RT. 123. Also, I bought my place back in the early '80's when prices weren't through the roof for that area.

For serious...I've been working from home now for 12 years and I've never been more productive. 8 years ago, I bought 5 acres, had a house built and my office is what most people used to call a guest house. It's a whole seperate structure from my home so, when my work day is done I leave the work behind...physically and mentally.
