Every few weeks you should check all your lights. Any time you pull up to a 7-11 or any place with big glass windows at night, check all your lights. Keep your inspection and registration (stickers on license plates) up to date. Don't give them a reason!

In driver's ed class (decades ago) we were taught to just back up to a wall at night and you can see via the mirror if the tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals work ~ takes 20 seconds and you don't even need anybody's help.

if you have a broken tail light, and one side is completely dark, then you are in violation of the code of virginia and can be pulled over it.
a brake light being out. is not as critical as the va code states that you must have TWO operating brake lights. and with the advent of the the center mounted brakelight. if one of the brakes light is out, then you still have two, and are in compliance with VA state code.
now if you brake light is out, this doen't mean that an officer can't pull you over as a courtesy and let you know "hey brotha, you know your brake light is out"
