What year did WAXIE MAXIE'S go out of business?

What year did WAXIE MAXIE'S go out of business?

When I was little I used to go to the one in SKYLINE MALL. I never really bought anything there though because after going to the movies and the arcade in the mall and then the TOYS R' US down the street rarely did I have any money left over to buy anything.

If I remember correctly there were also 2 WAXIE MAXIE stores at both ends of the Crystal City Underground Shops.

The last time I drove by where SKYLINE MALL used to be there is now a huge TARGET store over there.

That really fucking sucks. Big Box stores have taken over everything now.

Tower Records was awesome, especially the one near Tyson's.

To the OP, Waxie Maxie's was bought out in 1989 by an LA company, I don't know what year they finally closed shop.

Blessed are the murderous.

They were pretty much dead at that point anyway. The LA company was or eventually became "Strawberries".

There were still around as recently as 2000 I think.

Afer that I really do not remember.

They kind of just disappeared.

"about the same time as Kemp Mill ;)" --- nope, contrary to popular belief, Kemp Mill Records is STILL open for business. Visit their Hillcrest Heights, MD location near Iverson Mall for real vinyl. As for Waxie Maxies I would guess they closed in the late 80's when big box players came here like Wall To Wall Sound and Video or the WIZ. Try a Google for Max Silverman who founded Waxie Maxies. Miss those small local chains.

It lasted until at least 1991. I remember hearing Jane's Addiction's Lo Habitual De La Ritual album at the Springfield Plaza location and it came out in '91.

Yeah, Fairfax City was the shit with Kemp Mill at Fair City Mall, then just down the road for Penguin Feather and Record Convergence. The old stores used to throw their promo wall stuff in a pile and let people take them, sometimes there was some good stuff.

Wow, Waxie Maxie, Penguin Feather, and Record Convergence, old school. Was it the Penguin Feather at Rolling and Old Keene Mill that shut because it was a drug dealing front? That was the rumor back in the day, I was too young back then to verify...Though I did buy I a sweet jewel pin to wear on my rocking jean jacket from there. I remember my Dad buying records or tapes or 8 tracks from the WM at Springfield Plaza and they'd give you frequent buyer stamps that you'd glue on to a coupon sheet to redeem when the sheet was full, this was early 80's.

Waxie Maxies was pretty good but not as good as Harmony Hut. What other record store could you buy music, bongs, dildos, black light posters, incense and other novelties??? Giant Food had a chain of Giant Records. MusicLand was pretty bland. Hecht's had an overpriced music department. Montgomery Wards at Springfield Mall had every shitty album with either a drill hole, cut corner, or 'nice price' sticker. If it said 'nice price' that meant the album was overprinted and a flop. I miss Harmony Hut !

Yeah, I got some good stuff from the Vienna Kemp Mill back in the day. I bought my first record from that store....the 33 LP of Styx's "Kilroy Was Here". (Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto...domo...domo..)

I remember when CD's came in those 10-12" cartons that you could cut up and make mini-posters out of.

There was a penguin feather in Herndon way back when, they had a bunch of bongs in another section of the store, got shut down and turned into a carpet store. I used to go to the Record Convergence store in Fairfax exchange cassettes and lp's. Was a good place. I too liked Tower Records both in Fairfax and Tyson's. Never much cared for Waxie Maxie's they usually only sold mainstream stuff. Good memories - thanks!

I worked for Waxie Maxies until my store closed in late 1997 or early 1998. So they were around at least until then. I think the rest of the chain was pretty much gone within a year or so after that. Once they got bought out by Record Town (now FYE), stores were closing left and right.

Which store did you work at?

My cousin used to work at Erol's and then he would go to the Waxie Maxies at Skyline Mall and spend his entire check there. He did that for 2 years straight. When his mother found out she got really pissed off and threatened to kick him out of the house.

They have a store still open some where along the SE DC / PG COUNTY border.

I used to work for Waxie Maxies' district warehouse on 3rd ST NE in DC. Basically, it was a thankless, hot, crappy job of just putting CDs, tapes, and albums into boxes and marking the store number outside. I also had a major crush on a girl named Barb who worked at the Congressional Plaza store in Rockville. Wonder whatever happened to her...

That most definitely was a Waxie Maxie's. I used to go there to buy concert tickets. I remember you could buy tickets for shows at Merriwether Pavilion there and avoid the surcharges.

I worked for Waxie Maxies back in the early 80's. Worked at Beltway Plaza, then Hampton Mall. Also worked in the warehouse briefly - I remember the warped and/or scratched records that customers returned would usually get re-wrapped there in their shrink wrap machine and resold as new. Kemp Mill got their edge over WM because they sold drug paraphenelia as well as music, and old man Max wouldn't hear of it. I also remember around Christmas time when the store employees were expecting some kind of bonus, the old man or one of his stooges would come by, grumble a little bit, then allow us to pick out one or two 'budget' albums as our bonus. LOL! Sheesh.

A thankless job; but I sure did meet a lot of great people.

If I remember correctly, the Waxie Maxies in Worldgate changed their name to "Coconuts" shortly before going under.

What I mostly remember about Kemp Mill (at least the Greenbriar location) is they always had a big stack of the Washington Blade next to the front door. So as a kid I made the logical conclusion that Kemp Mill was a gay record store.

What an idiot. How is $1 per track cheaper than a CD/LP, which often have 10+ tracks for less than $10? Besides, nobody here is whining about stores closing - they are remembering some good times. Go to hell and fuck your dead mother.

Its cheaper to listen to the stuff for free online then just decide which tracks you want to buy and which are nothing more than filler. Unless you're buying a truly classic album or a greatest hits, you're paying for stuff that you won't listen to.

Better yet just rip stuff off of YouTube or get it on the good ol' mirc.

The company that actually bought Strawberries and Waxie Maxies was LIVE Entertainment. The "L" was originally "Lieberman" rack-jobbers. The "IVE" was International Video Entertainment. Shortly after LIVE was established the new president was from RCA and Hertz. His name was Jose Menendez. Yes that one... Jose and his wife Kitty... I am sure you all remember that their kids Lyle and Eric shot them to death in their living room. Mitt Romney's company Bain Capital bought the music retail parts of the business. Live Entertainment turned in Artisan Entertainment and now is now Lionsgate(Conglomerate). Strawberries and Waxie Maxies lost their identity when they were taken over by Record Town out of Albany,NY. You all know them now as FYE and there are still a few COCONUTS stores left. All others are gone. The rest is history.

The first Waxie Maxie's that I visited (back in 1988) was at The Corner Shopping Center in Falls Church. I also remember the Waxie Maxie's at Skyline Mall in Bailey's Crossroads. They were gone sometime around the late 1990s (1996-1997).

Waxie Maxie's was OK. When I started getting more and more into alternative rock, post-punk, and industrial rock, Waxie Maxie's was a place where I could sometimes find what I wanted.

Same also was the case with Kemp Mill, near my high school (George Mason).

After I first visited the Tower Records at Pike 7 Plaza (Tysons), there was less reason for me to visit Waxie Maxie's and Kemp Mill.

I really miss Tower Records!! It was awesome!!

Tower Records had nice hours and remained open until midnight. They had plenty of new CDs available where one could listen to them at a station or two before making the plunge. Also, they sold a good number of music books for guitarists, keyboardists, and other blooming musicians.

I worked at Waxie Maxie's in Crystal City underground mall when I first got hired (1987) and then a few weeks later got transferred to the Pan-Am shopping center location. Great times and even better people that I used to work with.
I left the area in the fall of 1989. Went back some years later, probably mid 90's, but everything had changed by then. I was relativelky young back then, late 20's, and I enjoyed working there. Good memories.

I use to drive from Pilot Virginia(close to Riner Virginia) all the way to Washington D.C. just to get fresh 12 inch records at Waxie Maxie's. Then got a lot of my buddies in the city of Roanoke hooked on Waxie Maxie's when I use to be a Dj back in the mid 1980s.

I'm pretty sure the Waxie Maxie in D.C's Shaw community went out of business in 1968 after the King Assassination Riots. I hope this helps.

I had never heard of Waxie Maxie's but I came across an unopened cassette single of Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" with a price sticker on the front from Waxie Maxie's. That song came out in 1996, so the store was still in business somewhere at that point. Hope that helps this years long discussion! LOL I had just gotten online to see what the heck Waxie Maxie's was after seeing the price sticker and excuse me but $3.49 for a single was WAY overpriced! LOL I've attached a picture of it for everyone to see. Thanks guys! Good luck!

I worked for a couple years at the Waxie Maxie's in Landmark Plaza and then in Skyline. Waxie Maxie's was bought by the New England music chain, Strawberry's, in 2001. Both Waxie Maxie and Strawberry's are defunct, as are many other record stores.

All I can add is that I went to an estate sale for the former owners of Waxie Maxies a few years ago. Not much in the way of wax (or any other media) at their house, but a few gold records were kicking around.

We operate a newish record store on U St in NW DC and have thousands of old (and some new) records and tapes.

Check us out at:
Joint Custody
1530 U St NW (Basement)
Washington, DC 20009

We are always buying records and old promo/concert t-shirts, so give us a ring if you're looking to buy, sell or trade records and related ephemera.

the same year the customers who spent the most money stopped coming

the same year women stopped going to record stores to find men to go out with on the weekend

it's also the same year "motown" became a kinda monopoly (during clinton) and all music and MTV videos being produced were RAP or whites acting like fools doing rap-like attempts

Waxie Maxie's always charged list price. You could get records for better prices at the original Kemp Mill and even less at other places. I bought one record at Waxie Maxie's once. That was one too many.

about the same time the new rage was being a government office worker separated by sound walls / cubicals.

government and contractors were just beginning (under Clinton) to give: DOUBLE PAY, CHILD CARE, INDOOR GYMS AT THE WORKPLACE, CAFETERIA. all great places to find other lucky employed people who "were un-touchable"

why the fuck would they go to the record store? they are all office workers and intermingle away from the paupers, didn't you know?

another thing going on: prices

Apple genious Steve Jobs had $1 apps and $1 music (the size of a wallet that could play any songs, any time)

the local record stores were stuck on CDROM-R, were using security devices and un-openable boxes, and $40 per albumn prices: way fucking higher than ever recorded

infact i went to one in the 2000's looking for something from The Wings. i couldn't find shit and their way of finding songs / cds was terrible. i finally (with staff help). I did notice some girls and though i might drop by more often then i heard on the radio: record stores are closing across the nation and locally.

all i f'ing found after like an hour was a "gold edition$$" thing that was over $50. i picked it up. but i didn't get all the way home before I turned around and returned it: it was just not anywhere near worth it when you can hear songs online for free (which has been do-able since about the mid-1980's, mr midi connected man)

If i bought the size music collection man had in the 80's/early 90's at 2000 prices:

I'd easily be able to buy an out of the box radio station, fully modern, AND HAVE MONEY LEFT OVER.

fucking insane prices and out of vogue at the same time
