And just up the road was the bar in Pickwick Square that would move the tables aside to create a dance floor. That fucking place was scary as the cops would surveil the shit out of it to bust drunk drivers. It was best to park over in the Bent Tree apartments and risk getting towed than put your vehicle in the Pickwick lot.

There was a little place called Rosemary's Thyme in the Union Mill Shopping Center that was awesome back in the late 90s early 2000's. They had an authentic clay/brick oven that they cooked everything from pizza's to steaks in. Damn they had some good food. The origninal owners sold it and the new owner made too many changes and it was never as good.

Titty bar called on top of the hill by the Hilltop Motel off Rt 50 on the right heading toward DC back in the 80s is when I remember it, dancers with pasties never ate there just for the show and a few cold beers it was similar to Dauphin's Steak house in Springfield but lower class

Pizza Supreme in Mclean.

Then, the old Taco Amigo, which was in the old stand alone building around the corner in the Safeway parking lot that used to be Holly Farms Chicken moved in after Pizza Supreme closed.

This was like in the early 90's, but on the wall as the certificate of occupancy was the old Pizza Supreme certificate from 1967, and it was now "Pizza Supreme, DBA Taco Amigo" or something like that.

Then, in the mid to late 90's, it was Taco Coyote.

Now I believe it is a Thai restaurant.

The Country Squire in Falls Church served great prime rib and Steaks. Sad to say that the grand old building was razed many years ago and now condos have replaced it. Not sure when this happened but it was A great place in the the 70’s

That would have been O'Toole's, famous for big bouncers, lots of drunks, nightly brawls, loose loose women, watered down drinks, and a fairly decent prime rib, now called "So Korean BBQ", big surprise there. There was also Jake's, which is now the IHOP. Saw one of the bartenders chop her finger off, sticking it down in the disposal (smart move, Barb!). Former Shade Tree is also now yet another Korean BBQ.

Those guys at Taco Amigo were so nice, always happy. We thought of it as our 'secret' place. A huge amount of food for like $5.

How about Angeethi in Herndon?

While not an American restaurant, it seemed to be popular.

It was for sale for well over a year. But, the signs re gone and it looks like someone has bought it.

The place was likely another casualty of Herndon's Restaurant Meals Tax. Venus Pizza and Subs in the shopping center across Elden Street has been vacant for almost 25 years. Tippy's Taco House gone almost as long. Herndon even managed to kill a Five Guys and a Fuddruckers.

Yet, look at how many new restaurants Ashburn has attracted!

Moral of the story: Taxation = Death to businesses. And, without businesses, you don't have jobs.

A Korean guy had it a few months ago , the business looked dismal and I wonder if he's still there I did not see the sign up . Mr Al had a good business there for many years he sold about 12 or more back .Yorktown was originally one space then then added the next door space which meant more rent and the charm of eating on the side walk left

The place was helped with carry outs as the dirty book store was next door with lots of good female skin mags to scan while waiting for a sub, lots of Democrats stood in place for their entire lunch hour heavy breathing looking at the gay mags

I worked at the Peoples Drug store at the Yorktown Shopping center in the late 80's. Whenever the new magazines would come in he would rip the cover off the previous months magazines and throw them in the dumpster, by the hundreds. Hell ya!!! We used to go dumpster diving and take home all kinds of perfectly good magazines for free.

Yes, Rocco's was the "Bomb". Great Pizza, other menu items! I met the owner, as well as the "Hogs", a year or two after they won the Super Bowl in 1992. There was Russ Grim, Joe Jacoby and Jeff Bostic. They all had their Super Bowl rings on. Being a fan, when my Dad has season tickets from 1964 up, I followed them and purchased tickets every year, up and to poinr when Dan Snyder destroyed the franchise. I stopped my father's 3 ticket season subscribe after the RG3 error (OR WAS IT AN ERA?) , Dan double the ticket prices and raised the parking prices by double for what?.

These 3 guys, "The Hogs" in their rookie season camp, in Loudoun County, used to drink pitcher after pitcher of beer at a place called the "Event" in Herndon on Eldon Street. I used to play darts there in the WADA league. I once went to the rest room to urinate, and so did Joe Jacoby, after me. I saw a shadow to my right and I looked to my right, and his shoulders, Joe's, were almost a foot and a half over the top of my head!

I said to myself, stick to your current sport of Darts, forget about FOOTBALL!

Cheers.

Ive spoke about MR T and the dirty book store before lol Holly Farms also was on Rt 1 across from Dixie Pig a bit and also the Arthur Teachers down the road , The best of all three worlds back in the 70's Hey blondie bring me another beer ! DAJAX I once was in the Ice House in Herndon when it first opened about 35 no about 40 years ago a long run for a restaurant in Nova and still going I think.

Damien did you ever eat at damm it I cant remember the ladies name that had it across from the Herndon Fire House way back 80's 90's It had her name on it . She had all the big wigs in Herndon like the Mayor in there all the time for lunch real mashed potatoes great gravy and meatloaf and several veggies a day like butter beans and others that she got fresh.. Maybells Thats it ! DAJAX The OP

The Korean is gone he could not survive the Covid Yorktown Deli is long gone now I was by there about 3 months ago I also used to go into that small Giant to get something cheap now and then way back , they had cheap sandwich's and were just off the Beltway where I was working so many days and nights in my lil "mobile high speed office" lol Pizza Bazano off the Braddock exit was another fav So was Franconia Pizza I still stop in now and then , good place JJs at Huntington off the Rt 1 or Huntington exit was a great cheap spot too But A car went through the window about 5 -6 years ago and the Koreans are long gone . The Lims had that place a good 30 years they made a truly good fried fish sandwich with hoot sauce and real original Manbo sauce for wings or fish and everything was cheap . There's another Korean JJ's on Gen Washington Dr that's a good place too

Hello to you . . That Holly Farms Chicken () . . . I wish I could help you out on your question. But it seems to me, in your rapid fire stream of consciousness, about places, that I can not keep up, with you.
The only other place, which again, I played darts at, was in was Herndon, named "Foot Anakin's " cold beer! and lower level dart area with 4 dart boards. The owner, once had a redneck dive, off of Cedar Lane, in Vienna called the "Horse and Buggy". Yep. That old bar, It was rank, and a rare WADA Dart league dive. What a country, then and now!
Cheers.

Too bad about the Amphora. I would image that Vienna is getting too gentrified for humble but good places like this. Much like Falls Church has become/is becoming.

I thought there was some tie-in with Marco Polo and Amphora. And you can see what is being built on Marco Polo's old site.

I used to love the Yorktown deli. The bookstore next door got a bad rap. Sure there were plenty of skin mags. It also had a great out of the area selection of newspapers. Plus in the pre-Borders world it had the best selection of books around. The same family also owned a news stand in Alexandria, also now gone.

Now here is an obscure one. Somewhere near Colvin Mill off of Route 7 there was a store that in the 1970s sold home made ice cream. When I was working construction in that area we went there a couple of times. Any idea what the place was?

Turned into a store Up On Utterback Store road or something like north of 7 that with older people running it I think a older lady . I went there now and then in the mid 70's for the ice cream in summers working in the area I think it was on the left going north from Rt 7 on what ever the road was as its been 45 years .It may have even been Utterback store that the roads named for , that's the first thing in my mind , hunch's are often right . It was known for the ice cream probably the same place

Meatball sub was my favorite at Yorktown deli ordering from MR A and the new guy who had it after him who expanded it, They had a long good run and were busy till the end , the last years and I did wait for my sub at the book store looking at the female skin mags like most men did

Yorktown deli needed a face lift it had a lot of use and showed it after about 12 years as the guy that bought it from MR A fixed it but the years after took their toll and the next owner I don't think had the money to do that so it slid . McGrevy's was next door and its gone too. I never went in there , I was working day shift mostly when I was there and did not want to get caught in a watering hole with no business being there, closest I came was the bank ATM in the corner that got lots of use and I also hit the Giant Food now and then for a cheap lunch of a Giant food sandwich when they had the smaller cheaper regular bread ones with roast beef ,ham, turkey , not the subs plus a salad or chili

Worked at the People's Drug Store in Yorktown in the late 80's. Every place in that shopping center was top notch. I damn near lived off of the Deli sandwiches or Grevey's!!!!

Back in the 90's I drove a garbage truck collecting trash in the alley behind the Yorktown center, there was a bike rack where the pass thru was from the front to the back of the center filled with ten speed racers with Clinton and Democrat garbage stickers on them. One of our guys won 500 cash on a pick 3 number, he said he would buy all of us subs at Yorktown Deli, I parked our smelly load and we went in and ordered subs , we went to the dirty book store to look at some hot women skin mags as we waited and found the place was packed in the mag corner just inside by the long dark haired hippy looking guy with glasses and a beard who ran the register

The crowd looked like a bunch of homos in skin tight bicycle clothes and were all looking at gay skin mags with nude muscle men on the cover! We got out of their fast !

Looks like the last roll of the dice for this joint in Annandale on Col Pike across from the fire station according to their Facebook page "closed permanently"

Was not open long enough to remember anything about the place . I think they had hamburgers, a very original idea

Thanks. I remember being a country store type place and being north of Route 7, but that was 50 years ago. It was definitely an older lady running the place

That was Thelma's located on Colvin Run Road. An assisted leaving facility is now located there.

Thelma's does sound right it was so long ago .Just north of Rt 7 with the older lady running it . I was not from that area of Fairfax but from south Alexandria so the roads in that area I knew then but not so well today as I rarely get up there but for nostalgic rides once in a blue moon as I live in the center of Fairfax county today , Everything in Fairfax has changed so much over the last 50 years , and its still changing sometimes very suddenly it seems

I used to go up and out Colvin Run from Rt 7 then up or out to or from Walker Rd to the upper Great Falls area mostly . Coming in Thelmas was on the left side heading to Walker Rd and there was northing near there that I remember in the mid to late 70's

Heart and Hand a upscale resturauant that was across from the Clifton Store that's gone now . It was there a long time in Clifton, I never went in there but got many sandwiches and coffee from the Clifton store across the street many years ago beer to party down the railroad tracks with hippys and Bunn.. Im surprised the article I just looked up was in 2011 so its been a good while I have not noticed it was gone but is something else today

Oh yeah! Starvin' Marvin's Steak&cheese sub was the best (although Anthony's in Falls Church and Booeymonger's in Georgetown made really good ones too.Booeymonger would let you pick out a ribeye steak from their cold case to make your sub with.

It was a place on Rt7 heading west on the right side by a 7-11 and had a sign on the roof That only had the words "EAT" on it , it was a typical greasy spoon roadside joint to grab something on the road that was decent , I remember lots of work trucks being there

That reminds me. I am betting this has been mentioned before, but does anyone else remember Whitey's in Arlington, just south of Clarendon. They also had the "Eat" sign, but for us it was mostly a place to hang out and drink.

Built in 1970 as a Jack In The Box . Gone about 45 years now then it became a Taco Bell until the state tore it and the bank next to it down about 12 years back to do a never happened major intersection project at Rt 29 and Gallows Road . Now its a dirty ugly lot still

Come on back JACK with those super JIB tacos they had them just like them two times at Burger King once a couple years ago then before about 10 years back .

JIBs were at Rt 1 Reston Annandale Mclean and Merrifield and Herndon

Bring um back JACK and BK!

Whitey's was on Washington Blvd.

I miss the Hectors Pizza in Falls Church. They were a local chain with locations in Alexandria and Georgetown, but I grew up walking distance from the one in Falls Church on W. Broad Street. Great pizza.

Wow, that brings back memories. I used to hang with that bartender Sean and I was just trying to remember his last name, it escapes me. So long ago. I think he ended up going into real estate.
