Shakey's Pizza in Annandale and Tysons. Not great, but pretty good buffets.

Sizzler, Po' Folks, and Black-eyed Pea in Fairfax City, although IIRC both Sizzler and Black-Eyed Pea also had outlets in Bailey's Crossroads.

Tom Sarris' (sp?) Orleans House in Rossalyn. This was known for prime rib and a tremendous salad bar.

Barnaby's in Vienna. Home of the "old world grinder," basically a sub sandwich.

This was a sister restaurant to the original Barnaby's of Wheaton, Maryland, opened originally in or before 1974. I used to go to the Wheaton outlet when I lived and worked in MD.

The Vienna Barnaby's was open in 2004, but came and went in a flash. Only ate there a couple times. It was where the original Anita's of Vienna was, now home to the Maple Avenue Restaurant.

Sadly, the Barnaby's in Wheaton closed in 2006 or shortly afterwards. Maybe the failure of expansion to Vienna, led to the failure and closing of the original Wheaton store a couple years later.

Not in NOVA, but Luigi's Pizza of DC on 19th St NW, just south of M St. Closed about 2008 to 2010.

Chesapeake Bay Seafood House-how can you argue against all you can eat artery clogging food

There are two I cannot remember the names of. One was a restaurant in the 1960s located near the Vienna library. The other was a restaurant on Fairfax Blvd just west of the Beltway next door to an old Putt-Put course. I think the HD dealership is there now

Anybody remember George's on Columbia Pike? Every Saturday they had a large pizza for $3.50, the price when they first opened. White redneck hangout and usually good for a fight on Friday nights. I'd order mine over the phone to go and then pick it up. Too much trouble there for me but it was damned good pizza.

Washington Post 1979

After hearing objections from the NAACP, the Fairfax City Council voted last night to tell a nationwide restaurant chain that the name Sambo's planned for a restaurant being built in the city is "culturally offensive."

By unanimous vote, the council agreed to send a letter to Sambo's Restaurants Inc., which has 1,070 restaurants nationwide, asking that a different name be chosen.

Those objecting to the name say it is taken from "The Story of Little Black Sambo," a 79-year-old children's book that the NAACP calls derogatory to blacks. The restaurant firm claims that Sambo's is derived from names of company officials.

J. Rayfield Vines Jr. of the Fairfax County NAACP told the council that "as a black citizon and black father, I do not want to have to go through a long explanation to my children about Sambo's restaurant."

Sambo's plans to open the restaurant at 10471 Lee Hwy. in September.

Councilman Carl Hemmer, who proposed the motion against the name Sambo's said the use of the name was an "insult to citizens who have the right to enjoy restaurants."

In the face of similar citizen opposition in 1977, the corporation changed the name of a Reston Sambo's to "Jolly Tiger." Five of the 1,070 Sambo's restaurants use the Jolly Tiger name.

Stanley Diemoz, vice president of corporate relations for the restaurant chain in Santa Barbara, Calif., said in a phone interview yesterday that the company, founded in 1957, is "pretty well set with its name," and has no plans to change it.

"in fact, we are in the process of changing the restaurants named Jolly Tiger back to Sambo's within the next year and a half," said Diemoz.

Diemoz said the name Sambo is derived from the names of the company's founders, Sam Battistone and Newell Bohnett.

In the parking lot next to 7-11 .The minced pork BBQ sandwiches with cole slaw. The homemade salty bean soup and crackers. No money to go inside the back in the 70's

But in the 80's I was eating inside at lunch times now and then till they closed and they made a great meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy green beans and a roll.

DAJAX The BBQ was East NC style..no red sauce ,it was not bad..but not what some have been..

WHERE can good east NC BBQ be found in this area? I know of several places on the way to the beach in NC, but 6 hours for a sandwich is a bit extreme.

I also liked Chesapeake Bay Seafood House, Bennigans, Carlos O'Kelly's, and Don Pablos.

I ate at a Tysons Bennigans on Greensboro Drive near International Drive about 3 or 4 months ago. Good food and service, but it was deserted at night. My wife and I wondered how it could stay open.

It could not stay open. Google lists that Tysons Bennigans as permanently closed.

Google maps show a Bennigans apparently open north of Gaithersburg, MD and another one north of Frederick, MD.

Google maps show a Don Pablos in Whitemarsh (north east of Baltimore) and another in Delaware between Newark and Wilmington, Delaware.

Probably not worth driving just for the Bgans or DP Maryland restaurants, but you could stop if driving near any of those.

On Lee Hwy. in Arlington. Redskins used to go there after the game I have autographs from Sonny and Sam.

I'd give anything to have their Clams Casino, Alpine Salad with crab and baked Lasagna again.

Was Po Folks the name of that restaurant that used to be on Route 1. I think a Chevy's was there at some point afterward and a KMart and a Franks used to be in the shopping center. I have no idea what is there now because I'm afraid to go down Route 1. LOL

Anyway, I liked the fatty food.

Ding How in Springfield - Was there since the 50s with the same guy cooking (was really old when we went there). Then they were just gone. Sold the restaurant (who kept the name so it's still there) but totally different. I was and still am devastated. Never messed up the order, great prices and just different somehow than anywhere else. Perhaps bc he used a 50 year old seasoned wok.

Galletta's in Leesburg - best Italian sandwiches, pizza dough and especially fresh pasta anywhere in the D.C. area.

Primo pizza. It's still there but the pizza isn't the same as when they were a small carry out spot.

Moved next to Starvin Marvin right before they closed and only ate there a few times, really sux that they are gone.

George’s in Georgetown - they had the best steak and cheese sandwich on the late night. After a night at Fifth Column, Babylon or Platinum, you could hit up this place at 4am for a ridiculous treat that would then make you shit your skeleton out a few hours later.

I think it’s still there but under different management.

Those fried fish trays/boxes were fantastic. The fish was served on a big slice of white bread, and was so hot you burned your fingers it you tried to pick it before it cooled a bit.

Little packs of Texas Pete hot sauce to round out the experience.

The place was across from the McDonalds On Cooper Road in the front corner where Moneygram is now. Johnny Macs or something.

They had hard ice cream Concretes and many others and the house specialty was Chili Mac with some onions and cheese on top that was about 5 dollars.

It was a good fill up now and then and they have been gone I guess 5 yrs now.

Today is moving day.Rent is due and I plan to be out at Midnight! LOL

Heading far South of the Occoquan LOL! To South of another River at Hampton Roads back to my Roots where I lived in the early to mid 60's.

Got a lil place in the summer, was going to move a month ago but too hot so we have been waiting for Columbus Day to do it .

1 month of work ahead with several trips. We have been down there every summer for over 25 years and know it well. I remember the Big Snow of 66 on TV with pics of up in Nova which I though was in the mountains and down there just some slight flurries that's it.

Plenty of fishing thousands of places to go and Ill be getting some rods by November. I fished all the time as a kid there. And Ill be back up here now and then to be amazed by the things they built overnight..!

The place suits me just fine down there as it looks like RT 1 South everywhere!

Take Care All I'm Glad I left you a good thread ! DAJAX The Busy Man
