Since Scott Ralls became president of Northern Virginia Community College, an already failing institution has become abysmal. We must only assume that the massive cuts to faculty, staff, facilities, and more are a desperate attempt to save money and compete with the likes of Strayer.

More significantly, NOVA has been on a downward spiral for years due to ineffective leadership. Without a doubt, the biggest influence over the culture and performance of an organization is the leader. The leader provides direction, resources, and feedback to the team, and as a result, this all filters down to the lowly workers on the front-end.

In attempts to streamline services and cut budgets, faculty and staff were laid off in massive numbers never before seen at the college, replaced by non-English speaking faculty and less-educated staff at cheaper prices. Those who were not forced out now wish that they were. Current leadership has created a community of fear, bullying, and micromanagement.No where at the college is this more apparent than in Workforce Development, where the idiot of all idiots reigns supreme.

Students are ultimately the ones who suffer. Sad that small fragile egos and lack of concern for the community have created this mess.

The leadership problems are above NOVA's level. When the economy was booming NOVA was viewed as a cash cow by the rest of the state to help cover community college costs elsewhere. When the real estate bubble burst it hit NOVA hard and the state was not willing to step in and help out. Spending had to be slashed and this resulted in the loss of significant talent.

I was fretting about which college to go to: Harvard or NOVA. Based on this post, I guess I'll suck it up and go to Harvard.

Sure in its glory days NOVA had its share of teachers who couldn't land a job at a decent daycare facility. It also had teachers who taught at other area universities or worked as government contractors and looked at NOVA as a way to pick up more cash. It had teachers who had taught at schools elsewhere in the country who had relocated to the DC area with their spouses. It had people in business who taught at NOVA to market their businesses or to pad their resumes. It had people who had a strong interest in something and wanted to share it with others. It had people who were just getting into teaching and people who were slowly getting out of it.

I studied Nuclear Medicine at the Annandale Campus

I dropped out of NoVa back in 2012 when it hit me that the school is a glorified online class.

I would like to start by looking at their budget changes, maybe 3 year period, 2015-2017. FCPS.EDU budget is public information, and FCPS K-12 is rated one of the best in the nation.

So, why would NOVA.EDU be so much poorer or have less access to money from public sources ?

Can anyone suggest if this budget is available for review either public or under "Freedom of Information Act" ?

Nova is what it is. Use it advantageously and move on. It's affordable and accessible to help students get to other schools or to get into certain jobs with a very low investment.

the 50k figure is sort of accurate for current enrollment at NOVA in terms of headcount. a little bird tells me it's a bit under that for headcount. full-time equivalent (FTE) is a lot lower

enrollment trends vary widely by campus too. some campuses are thriving

part of the problem is that NOVA is too big to run efficiently and don't get me started on vccs . the multi-campus setup means you get layers of extra management, time spent coordinating this and that, miscommunications that have to get cleared up, use your imagination. it also means that incompetent people in administration can disappear behind the hard work of others with no accountability so you get a bloated layer at the top that does not always get it when it comes to what matters for students for some members of admin council, a retirement party is long overdue. line up the potluck already some of this will be exposed when the musical chairs of deans and assoc deans is done at the end of summer and it becomes obvious to all how much work has been left undone year upon year


an example. for those who work at NOVA. did you ever notice that the person who sends out the admin council notes isn't quite clear on how to convert a word doc to a pdf? instead he or she types up the notes in word, prints the word doc, and then scans the hard copy to get a pdf and emails that out. month after month no one notices how weird it is to get these blurry documents. or maybe no one reads them that's a kind of metaphor for ... boldly NOVA


there are a lot of things going right at NOVA and there's a lot to be proud of but as in any organization there are problems. NOVA's problems are mainly structural and cultural. maybe ralls has what it takes to address those problems . maybe

I taught at NOVA six years with stellar reviews and can say without question the school has had some very good teachers, among many very bad ones. It's a testament to NOVA's leadership that the hacks are promoted and the good faculty are forced to split, either driven out or just throw in the towel.

There's no real reason why NOVA should not have better faculty across the board, with so many talented people in the DC area, but it's just a shit show when it comes to administration.

As someone else pointed out, some campuses are thriving, others wallow in ineptitude. Culture plays a huge role in this. The Annandale and Loudoun campuses are by far the best run. The Alexandria campus feels more like a daycare at times. I’ve taken classes at all three and could taste the disfunction in the air in Alexandria an 90% of the people that go there seem to only be there to socialize or because mommy and daddy force them to go to school in order to stay at home.

I researched all my teachers on ratemyprofessor before signing up, no issues. Teachers now need to have a good ratings if they want to fill the classroom up. A few teachers begged that we leave them great reviews.

Sadly good ratings have become equated with teachers giving good grades and being lenient with extensions. Teachers who demand excellence, who expect students to learn and be able to use the material are as likely to be scored low as teachers who are lazy and indifferent.

I heard that President Ralls may leave. Any truth on that?

Got my associates from NOVA, enjoyed my experience there before I moved on to GMU. I don't understand the shade that NOVA gets.... it's a commuter college, lower your expectations if you're thinking it's Harvard. Do your research - ratemyprofessor.com is invaluable.

Outside of that, there's absolutely nothing wrong with NOVA. I had better professors there than at GMU. And I saved a shit-ton of money. No, it's not a top-tier/4 year spot... but it does serve it's purpose.

Yes, Dr. Ralls will be leaving. Many of the faculty and administrative officials not happy with him. NOVA is on shaky ground right now.
