They want to rename J.E.B. Stuart High School...........
Posted by: What The Fuck is Going On? ()

.....after a guy who WTOP refers to as a war "hero". Only problem is, he didn't do anything heroic that I can determine. He was a football player in high school and went to Iraq and sadly was killed in a mortar attack.

What is heroic about any of that? If he did something heroic while fighting in the war, you would think WTOP would have mentioned it.....right?

Lots of young men lost their lives in Iraq. Is it because this kid happens to have been a black man? That's my guess.

At least Stuart had some accomplishments on his resume.

Lowering the standard of what's called heroic is especially prevalent when the individual is from some "special" group.
They're probably holding out for a transgender mixed race mentally challenged single mother to rename the school.

Yes, it won until our Social Justice Warriors decide that the community wants something different--never mind that the community mostly wanted to keep the old name.

Fifty years ago America was a lot more free than today.
All these military operations overseas have made us hated worldwide and we suffer the consequences of living in fear of retribution.Travel used to be fun.
Now it's like checking into a prison camp. I liked freedom better before all these heroes died defending it.

Stuart H.S. Community Voting Results:

Stuart = 917

Thurgood Marshall = 763

The community has spoken, the name should be “Stuart H.S.”, if the Superintendent and/or the School Board choose any name other than “Stuart” then the decision was clearly manipulated and coerced by outside sources and the Stuart community will be extremely upset.

This is America, and the Stuart community has spoken. Most of the Stuart community was not in favor of a name change in the first place, but this was INGNORED by the school board.

This story just shows where we are as a nation.
All this stupidity over a school name.
If we accept the premise behind this activity we should rename Washington DC and any other City, town ,school anything named after former slave owners.
The suggestion that a former student who was killed while building a barracks in Afghanistan illuminates another aspect of our confusion as a nation.
I regret the needless death of this young man .
There is no way of knowing what he might have contributed to our society had he chosen a different path.
If some foreign country decided to put it's troops in America we all would feel justified in repelling them by any means. Perpetuating the argument that our freedom is being defended by this kind of action in other countries only increases the probability that more of our youth will be sacrificed .
Afganistan hasn't invaded America and neither has Vietnam but I'm guessing that neither was ever a remote possibility.
We can all reject the history of slavery . Let's accept the lesson of history and stop trying to rule the world by force. We have been in Afghanistan longer than Vietnam through presidents of both parties.Someday we'll leave and all the lives and money will be gone.
Go down to the Vietnam War Memorial to see the cost of wars. Use the lesson not to glorify war but to learn and work for a different path.

So the school board has the right to potentially have the taxpayer's of Fairfax County pay up to a million dollars (for just one school, yeah right) based on 930 votes. A county with a population of over a million people.

Stuart, a school whose student body is over 60% in need of free or reduced priced meals. What's wrong with this picture?

This is all because 5 students are offended? The Fairfax NAACP stated the "Stuart Name Change" was their number one agenda item for 2017. The NAACP has nothing better to do?

The community is sending a message again to the school board....I hope they "get it" this time. Every Student I talked to who VOTED....didn't want the name changed.

Anybody worried about the lack of accreditation at many of our local high schools?

Going to cost the taxpayers a LOT more money than advertised.

They are going to have to start all over with the Athletic and Music Boosters. I heard admin didn't even allow Tag Day this year because they knew the kids would just get abused by parents angry about the name change. So instead of private funds FCPS will have to give even more money to Stuart to make up the difference.

No, they had tag day. No one blames the kids....people are smart enough to know it's Sandy Evans/Pat Hynes.

I will be curious as to how much money they receive this year. The schools have lost my support. I'll think of another way to help the community but it won't be for the school board to spend.

If there was a large per cent of the student body behind this issue wanting "change" it would have been done a year ago, that's a fact. The kids actually care about the money.

The Stuart students at my door didn't know anything about Stuart or Lee and thought Grant was president during the civil war. Once again...not their fault.

School Board can't conceive of doing anything on it's merits. Typical cave in to political correctness.
Once the NAACP told them to do it they couldn't imagine making their own decision based on anything as ridiculous as costs or unnecessary complications.
The board pretends to be leaders but are actually followers .

J.E.B. Stuart was a flamboyant cavalry leader, no question about it. He also engaged in hostilities against the United States. That makes him a less-than-stellar role model. Rather than take his name down, why not remember him as a seriously flawed individual, who had virtues, and grave faults? Every graduate will go out into the world well grounded in the importance of finding the best in others, and being tolerant of their shortcomings. All have sinned, and all fall short of the glory of God.

Those of you who know a bit might also know that the Confederacy wanted to secede and have their own country.
Exactly what the United States did not even a hundred years earlier.
They weren't interested in "hostilities against the United States" they just wanted out.
The States "entered the Union voluntarily not by force.
They felt that since they entered voluntarily that they could withdraw voluntarily.
The Union disagreed and used military force to make that impossible.
While so called historians call Benedict Arnold a traitor the fact is the United States was formed by traitors.
George Washington was a former British officer who had sworn an oath to the king or queen of England,an oath which he obviously betrayed.
Now we find ourselves imposing our will by force worldwide to benefit big money .
Most of us can't fathom why we're hated so much.
If China or Russia wanted to put it's troops in the US by force and to steal our resources we probably wouldn't like it.
When we do the same we see it as okay.
So take it easy on the history lessons or at least save them for the pitifully uninformed victims you might impress.

Please take note that Benedict Arnold had joined the Continental Army---that is why he is called a traitor. That differentiates him from a loyalist who never left the King.

So all the founders of the US are called traitors right?
They also joined the Continental Army.
You are correct about all of them being traitors but that's not how it's taught here in the US. They all betrayed their King.
Benedict Arnold betrayed all those traitors which is why he is viewed as a traitor in the US.
In England he would be a loyal subject.
I hope that clears things up.
If not do some research.

You people are missing the point. The thing that upsets the actual “real” Stuart community, including many students, parents and people that actually live in this community is that:

a. The School Board decided to change the name against the MAJORITY of the actual community’s wishes.

b. The board was infiltrated by outside political groups with their own agenda.

c. The “outside sources” that have infiltrated this process are the NAACP and its affiliates, they have been on a decade’s long crusade to “force” communities to change the names of streets, school, libraries, etc. in an attempt to rewrite America history to an alternate reality that is more palatable to their sense of purpose. Their tactics are unethical and illegal, using coercion, corruption, and threats to force their agenda upon local governing bodies (and the communities that they govern).

One thing is very clear, an overwhelming majority of the “local” community was against the change in the first place, but the school board completely ignored that, why? Because of threats and intimidation by the NAACP.

Anyone that opposes the views of the NAACP are automatically labeled as “racists” to shut them up, so everyone (including politicians) is afraid to even mention the NAACP and their agenda to rewrite and distort actual American history. To question this agenda is political suicide.

So what does this mean? The NAACP, who are the minority view, are forcing their will upon the majority of Americans. By definition this goes against the constitutionally protected equal rights that the NAACP purports to support, and takes the right of choice away from the majority that oppose this agenda.

The NAACP should be investigated as its methods fit the definition domestic terrorism and their “removing/renaming” agenda is the root cause of a great deal of civil unrest in America. This is not a harmless agenda, it is costing taxpayers billions of dollars all across the country and now people are losing their lives (Charlottesville).

The majority of Americans are not in favor of glorifying the south or slavery, but for the NAACP to try and rewrite history is just plain wrong.

Ask yourself why were the white supremacist groups in Charlottesville in the first place?

It's because Charlottesville recently changed the name of "Lee" park to Emancipation Park... Why not Charlottesville Park, or a name of a local community leader, or notable former Charlottesville resident? Why Emancipation Park?

Do you actually believe for one second that the local Charlottesville community people "chose" the name Emancipation Park??? No they did not, the name was forced upon them just like what is happening now in the "Stuart" community. This is a little known fact that was hardly publicized, Charlottesville was not only about the statue removal.

I do NOT support ANY of the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, by any group. And what that idiot did with running the car into people was horrendous, I hope he gets life in prison or worse for what he did, as well as the racist inbreeds that poisoned his young mind. But this is what this issue is coming to.

ALL those groups were in Charlottesville because of the NAACP agenda, to rewrite the history of America.

Slavery is an unfortunate chapter in American history, but it did happen, we can't ignore it, we must learn from it.

I am not a racist, in any way. I am a decorated Veteran and I fought for the rights of ALL Americans, not just "some" of them.

We are ALL Americans, and we need to stand together against REAL tyranny in this world, not fight with each other about statues and school names.

This country and this world have some real problems, right now, today, and real threats for our children's future, let's not fight about the past, that war is over and slavery was rightfully abolished.

To look ahead is to move forward, to dwell on the past is to remain stagnant...

Stuart fought for Virginia, he was a solider by profession. Even Lincoln repeatedly stated many times the war was not about slavery.

My guess is Lincoln, Stuart, Lee, Washington, Jefferson etc. would feel as mainstream America does. Lee lived the rest of his life as an advocate for peace and unity.

If there WAS hate in any of their hearts I imagine you'd would be a kindred soul..."taking the high road" by JUDGING people who lived over a hundred and fifty years ago, making nasty statements about how Stuart (and others) would feel today, gleefully destroying and kicking statues around, verbally assaulting those who don't agree by calling them White Supremacist...

Sure. Almost $1million to change the name of a school. Something that will have no impact on achievement.

And, it likely will not stop here.

"Stuart" received the most votes. If Braband recommends another name, he is opening the door to change lots more school names--and spend lots more of the taxpayer's money.

The Confederacy very much wanted war with the Union. Jefferson Davis was a former Secretary of War. Much of the Regular Army officer corps was from the secessionist states, and West Point-educated. Many went over to the Confederacy, despite having sworn to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Finally, don't forget it was Confederate troops who fired the first shots at Fort Sumter, because a Federal ship had the temerity to sail in to re-supply the troops. There were Union sympathizers in the South, but their numbers were too few to derail the runaway secessionist fever. The leadership of the Confederacy knew exactly what it was getting into, but it believed a few months of conflict would end with a negotiated peace, or at least a truce, That was wishful thinking, abetted, no doubt, by dreams of making the continent safe for the planter class, which looked to expand the plantation system, based on coerced labor of blacks, while keeping its boot firmly on the necks of lower class whites.

What does this have to do with the price of apples?

Does FCPS need to spend a million dollars on this? And, please don't forget, if they name it something else it opens the door to renaming many more schools. Is this money well spent?

Opening fire on American troops to maintain slavery is a pretty good sign of what was in their hearts. Especially for commissioned officers.

I thought FCPS was short of money? Who's paying for this?

Here is the breakdown for Stuart High as shown last year on www.fcps.edu.

• $270,000 – the approximate cost of a new front school sign, scoreboards, field logos, gym wall murals and gym wall padding
• $154,000 – athletic team uniforms
• $150,000 – band uniforms and equipment (i.e. large bass drum)
• $104,000 – other items with Stuart Raider logo
• Total — approximately $678,000

No. The music department did not. You are mistaken.

All be quiet and wait on what Ryan will try to do next. He makes things up and foolish people follow him. Ever watch a Board Meeting on TV? He makes up shit. Seriously, the only sane one, the one sticking to procedure and policy is Elizabeth Schultz. Tune in and watch. It's a shit show and Elizabeth.

Who is paying for it? If you live in Fairfax County, you are! And, this is just the beginning.......

B.S.

While I agree that the southern secession was all about slavery (just read the individual state secession declarations), that was not the reason that the majority of officers, including most West Pointers, resigned their federal commissions and fought for the CSA.

Stuart, like most officers, did not resign and join the CSA to fight for slavery. He resigned because he thought it was immoral to fight AGAINST his fellow Virginians.

The original government was a confederation of states for a reason - the founding fathers were afraid of a large federal government. But the confederation did not function well, that is what caused the change to the current federal constitution - but it did NOT change the way most Americans felt about the primacy of the state over the federal government. The founding fathers would not recognize our government today, with the feds controlling almost every aspect of our lives.

While it is fair to call the southern politicians traitors, this is not an appropriate label for the soldiers - they were predominately fighting for their states, which were NO LONGER part of the USA when they joined the CSA.

It wasn't about slavery. It was about maintaining their economy, which was reliant on slavery. If they had John Deeres back then, they wouldn't have needed slaves. Once slavery was abolished, agriculture was force to invent better and cheaper ways to plant and harvest corps, which was a key part of the lead up to the industrial revolution.

Now, the democrats want to use illegals as their slave labor. Some things never change.

The industrial revolution was well underway prior to the civil war. Steam power ,trains automated factories all existed. At the point where internal combustion engines were development ,around 1900, then agricultural machinery was developed that made much hand labor unnecessary.
To suggest that the civil war "forced" the development of such machinery is the reverse of the actual sequence of events.
It is regrettable that the civil war ever happened.
Had events taken their course , slavery would have been obsolete in short order anyway.

You are, of course, talking about the first industrial revolution, which was pretty much already over by the time the civil war started. I was, of course, referring to the second industrial revolution - the first one to be driven by the USA and one that led to machines replacing human labor in agriculture and created the great family dynasties that still exist (Rockefeller, Melon, Carnegie). The advances of the second IR dwarf those of the first. The world completely changed after the second IR (air flight, automobile, radio, electricity, petroleum based engines, natural gas, high tempered carbon steel used in buildings, etc).

People thought that slavery would become obsolete in 1787 too. Slavery proved to be an adaptive institution. The upper south was undergoing an industrial revolution at the outbreak of the Civil War, and slave labor was used by railroads and manufacturing companies. Companies owned some slaves and rented others.

Slavery still exists all over the world. Rich foreign families that live the US import slaves to work at their residences and businesses. It's rampant in Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia. As the poster above noted, illegal immigrants are the present day slave labor in the US. Your iPhone is built by slave labor in China in case you really care about stuff like that.

I think they want/expect it to be paid out of private funds. They think private funds grow on trees. This is one of the most economically disadvantaged schools in the county. I am sure these parents, many of whom are struggling to make ends meet, will open their wallets to make the School Board happy.

Maybe those Hollywood stars who thought this was such a great idea will finance everything.
