The state board website goes back to 1997. McDonnell has already surpassed Gilmore, Warner and Kaine with more votes left to be counted.

Record votes cast for an individual candidate. The scenario you describe happens in a trouncing - like the one you saw today. I suppose you could also have a huge increase in registrations that don't result in actual voters. Last year saw so many new registrations that will probably skew actual turn out percentages for years to come.

You get the record votes cast amid record low turnout by winning 60% of the vote.

Deeds made three mistakes:
(1) Not coming up with any sort of transportation plan, and then having said plan be a dodge. That cost him among moderate Dems and Independents in Northern VA.
(2) Running away from Obama as fast as he could. That cost him among Dems in Fairfax, Henrico, and Albemarle, and prevented him from running up the score in Arlington, Alexandria, C'ville, Richmond, Norfolk, and Portsmouth. It apparently didn't work in the rest of Virginia, either.
(3) Running on the thesis when McDonnell was talking about jobs and transportation. Such a strategy MIGHT have worked against a Cuccinelli-style candidate, but as of now, I trust McDonnell to try and work with Northern Virginia and Tidewater representatives in the General Assembly. (I voted for Deeds, BTW). Bolling hasn't done too much damage as LG. Cuccinelli, I just hope won't make an ass of himself and use the AG position to grandstand. (I have less faith in him than in McDonnell.)

We'll see how McDonnell governs. Will the Senate Dems cockblock McD just because he's the wrong party, or will the downstate GOPers in the House cockblock McD because they don't want the gravy train to end? Or, will McD declare, 'Whoops, budget problems, no transportation for you!' and govern as a standard issue Republican?
