We need some help at WSHS. Teachers returned to work at West Springfield High School this week to appalling conditions. The trailers were not properly maintained by administration over the summer and they all have become infested with disgusting black, toxic mold. We were unable to access our classrooms all week. In addition to the mold, there is asbestos all over the building, which is under construction.

Teachers are extremely concerned with the impact could have on their own health, as well as the health of the students, who return to school Monday. This can cause allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and cancer. Asthmatic teachers/students can die in this environment. Concerns expressed to Mr. Mukai and other administrators have been ignored. This could seriously affect teachers who are pregnant or have other health conditions. Students and teachers are at risk being in this hazardous environment.

What is the best way to proceed? Should some of the teachers and parents call OSHA? This renovation is truly a disaster and everyone is at risk. Parents need to call to express their concerns. These trailers should be replaced immediately. Sparta was closed all week due to the toxic mold. How can students be safe in school starting on Monday?

Once black mold is in your lungs, you cannot get rid of it. This needs to be a priority, but sadly administration is more concerned with buying pizza and Capri Suns for the staff in an effort to avoid confronting this serious problem.

I plan on calling the county - hopefully other staff and parents will do the same. This is not healthy or safe for anyone!

You are not TJ. No Greek columns for your building. No gold plated labs either. Study mold on your own time.

You are really bad at science for a high school staff member. Antifungal meds will kill black mold if your immune system is too weak to deal with it. Your alarmist and misleading post won't help your case with any educated stakeholders at the county.

Mold is only a concern in extraordinary circumstances and possibly in the case of someone with a compromised immune system. There are trillions and trillions of mold spores everywhere which you encounter everyday.

For the most part the mold hysteria is blown way out of any realistic proportion and is just yet another attempt to profit from contrived problem remediation services promoted by related companies/products.

Many in the county know about this, but the community at large does not. Go right to the superintendent and every school board member. This is serious, and if they have done nothing, or too little, OSHA needs to get involved. Parents have more clout than teachers so perhaps they will get results. Good luck!

Use a humidifier and a digital thermometer hygrometer to keep the humidity inside the room below 55%.

Call the county health dept if there is structural damage that is not being repaired.

Make parents aware of the health risk to their children.

not much you can do in VA besides change the law. Mold protocol is a free for all in VA. Can't do anything unless you change the law. Tried to get my landlord to re-mediate and she's cool but ignorant. We forget Northern VA is like a swampland and many people live in mold invested areas. Look at the protocol.. it tends to suggest you kick up more issues than what you want resolved. Enforcement for mold is very week. And if you want the schools to do anything about it-- good luck. If you are liberal and want action even worse. when a gov takes over they can basically poison you forever until any action is taken. Can't touch them on mold or asbestos issues in school... or molestation.

All i suggest is you and every individual file a complaint with the health department. You can try to do your own tests or at least tell the school you intend to have someone come in on your own working space since they won't. Call the department and see what your recourse is.

The learning cottages are perfectly fine. These crybaby teachers just like to make up all this bullshit about mold and asbestos. There is not a goddamn thing dangerous or unhealthy about those learning cottages.

Any proof? Aside from Patch, which is known to publish stories a day or two after they are posted here. But few people read Patch.

The problem at WSHS is not mold; it's the principal. Mukai is in way over his head, and doesn't really seem to be learning on the job. The guy lurches from crisis to crisis without any organized long-term planning or management. Free lunch for admin, stupid books & shirts for the teachers, and candy for the kids is not really HS-level shit. Maybe he could run a kindergarten properly. Maybe.

All the WSHS parents, 18 year old seniors and all the teachers and staff at WSHS should have voted for Chris Grisafe. Instead all the idiots voted in another democrat. More money is going to be spent on changing names of schools amd other waste than on getting decent (mold free) trailers for your children amd their classmates. We all better sell our properties before the bottom falls out of the FCPS area housing market. School are declining and it is directly related to the increase of liberal school board members.

Yes, mold tests were done. Mike Mukai and Andy Muir REFUSE to share the results. On Friday, a group of teachers called in sick in protest. They are lying to the parents and the staff. This administration needs to be held accountable. Call the School Board. Mike Mukai needs to be removed as principal. He has proven to be totally inept, uncaring, and dishonest. Poor WSHS - we are all struggling over here and the kids are suffering. Teachers have tried to speak out but fear retaliation from all the administrators, especially Mukai. His team of nitwits all need to go!

black mold is the most common - infact lowes is selling decking board with it and saying "oh don't worry about that, it's ok to use indoors"

My recommendation is to call some specialist because you won't be able to solve this problem yourself. I heard a lot of stories when people were trying to get rid of mold and in most of the cases they just failed. Try to call the guys from Mississauga Mold Removal, I think they will help you. My sister called them when she had problems with mold and they made the full disinfection of the house as a present. This is a really good to keep your house clean because it can cause dangerous diseases for the health.
