It is an iterative process. Mount Vernon High School may not be the best school in Fairfax County, but it is far from being the worst school in Virginia. The route 1 area has needed revitalization for years, and it is finally starting to happen. It will take time but Mount Vernon HS will come around.

Kilmer MS sucks and Marshall just lost its long-time principal. Safe to say people will keep paying more to get into Langley and avoid Marshall.

Freedom High School and Potomac High school are in the Route 1 area. A lot of low income people, hence the low SAT scores. Prince William also does not spend as much per student as FCPS.

The nature of the community and the kids coming through makes or breaks the school. The best that the principal will ever do is at the margins of that. It may make for a better work environment as a teacher but it won't make much if any difference as far as the outcomes for kids goes. You will never overcome the backgrounds, family structure, or other aspects which come along with where they're coming from. That's been proven many times in many places and is just the simple fact of the matter.

The top 50 of the state? You think that's some kind of distinction? lol Given the demographics of NoVA versus the rest of the state, other than some areas in Tidewater, you could sleepwalk it into the top 50.

The budget around here is anything but 'tight.' It's only 'tight' because there's a ton of overhead and it's not properly prioritized.

^ Above poster is correct that the demographics will pretty much tell you the rankings for a school. The exception may be people who look poor here, but were displaced due to war or political strife and who were from the middle or middle upper class of the country from which they were displaced (this is not the profile of those sitting on the border right now).

I went to MV and you're right. It was total shit. The center kids did better with grades than the mainstream.

SLHS is on the way down. The new principal is not engaged she does not know staff much less students. She never is in the hall and with the exception of Dana Walker and marc Penn no one follows through . Most emails are ignored or you need to ask twice. The counselors forget to send transcripts or forget to tell kids they have transfered out of a class. The school is overcrowded and the test sol scores have gone way down.

You are correct about South Lakes not sending out transcripts and counselors not getting back to students or parents. The lack of communication is at an all time high.

So now the area is hispanic-majority and that's considered "diverse" even though everyone is the same; hispanic with differences only manifesting themselves in gang affiliations and heritage days with costumes/dances/foods. So, if you had a nice little group you fit into, and everyone liked you, and you never experienced bullying (especially racial) or any other hardship then yeah, I'm sure you had a great time at Annandale High. Good for you. But for everyone else, especially those with the "stupid notion" that all humans can interact together and race/culture etc shouldn't prevent people from hanging out, their experience was hell because reality isn't the "all the world is one" utopia the rich envision and experience.

Mt Vernon High School - There are a few teachers and administrative staff that care but until they get a new Principal that is willing to make a difference you will continue to see high suspension rate with minority students. A good candidate for principal is Mr. Hill currently sub school administrator.

I see Mt Vernon mentioned a few times here...ironically, in the 70's and 80's, Mt V was one of the better schools around...as well as Ft Hunt, now closed.

Ivy leagues, Military academies, other top colleges were typical destinations...athletics were also top notch...

It's JEB Stuart. Trust me, I went there.

I am asian and graduated from Mclean High school in 1985. It is still one of the best schools in Virginia. I live in Mclean and my children are attending Long Fellow Middle school and Mclean High School.

I work for Fairfax County Public School in Information Technology so I travel to ALL schools in the county and I can say this, in term of academic:

Best Elementary school: Franklin Sherman
Best Middle Schools: Long Fellow, Rachel Carson
Best High Schools: Thomas Jefferson, Mclean, Madison, Langley

Worst High schools: Annandale, Falls Church, Herndon

I notice that Annandale, Falls Church and Herndon have such a good football, that's why they suck in academic.

Mclean high school football sucks. That's why it ranks #2 in the state of Virginia in academic

My alma matter MV, has the lowest SAT's in the county so it is in the running.

Yeah Gerry Hyland f'ed it up with a 27 year tenure as MV Supervisor. His reign over the MV District oversaw massive incresses in Section 8 Housing, with corresponding rises in crime along the Route 1 Corridor, and of course, a massive decline in academic performance at MV Highschool.

He retired and headed home up North. He and fellow Carpet Bagger Jim Moran are probably playing Golf together as I write this. LOL.

According to Wikipedia, these were the Demographics of MV High School in 2014-15:

"For the 2014-15 school year, Mount Vernon High School's student body was 37.80% Hispanic, 29.56% Black, 20.91% White, 6.36% Asian and 5.37% Other."

These numbers would rival that of a typical Inner City school, I would imagine.

Hyland "revitalized" it with massive building of new housing - apartments, town homes, etc. Unfortunately a rule was in place that all housing units built had to have significant set asides for Section 8 Housing.

At first, the percentages of section 8 recipients were relatively low. But, over time, the Non Section 8s moved out and more Section 8's came in.

The nice apartments built in '87 on Sacramento Drive next to the Woodlawn Shopping Center.

This cycle repeated itself over and over.

On the surface, Rt 1 Corridor appeared revitalized.

But, the massive crime increases and decline of MV Highschool tell another story.

Yep, the well to do families send their progeny to BI, the Saints, and Episcopal. That leaves MV roaming with the urchins from Route One and Buckman Road.

Let me guess.

You have faith that the Dems. will "fix" problems they created,
which broke down the school.

The point is MV is much worse than it used to be. There is a reason for this and you can't trust the ones who made it that way to improve it.

Here is my 2c on this:

I was "Fresh of The Boat" in 1982 as an immigrant from Vietnam. I was supposed to go to Falls Church HS but my uncle decided that I would be better off at Mclean HS so I went to live with him and attended Mclean HS. Best decision I ever made. I would not be where I am today had I gone to Falls Church HS. After I graduated from Mclean HS, I ended up at UCLA. After graduating from UCLA, I came back to Virginia and briefly stayed in Annandale, Herndon and Falls Church areas so I am familiar with the areas.

What I do know about JEB Stuart, Annandale, Herndon and Falls Church High Schools is that the large majority of the students are either Hispanics and blacks and many of them come single parent family. It seems like, this is just my opinion, Hispanics and blacks don't seem to take education seriously. It is not a politically correct thing to say, but it is sadly true.

You don't see those type of behaviors at either TJ, Mclean, Langley and Madison.

For Asians, the opposite is true, we take education too seriously.

The funny thing is that when you hear people complaining about minorities are not doing well in school with low grades and test scores, they conveniently leave out asians as minorities.

I went to Marshall, class of 90' and that place was the pits. You had all the white trash "freaks"(rednecks & metal heads) you had all the low income kids from Idylwood apts and the spics from Dolley Madison and to make it worse a huge influx of vietnamese immigrants scattered about. I think sophomore year a gang fight broke out and Viet-Cong kid stabbed another kid in the hallways. Marshall has come along ways only took 20+ yrs to get better.

South Lakes HS. Neighborhoods have sued for their kids to not be sent to that school. It's the blight of Reston.

Two kids nearly died at South Lakes from fighting during the 90s but it never made the news. The school covers up everything the illegals did.

Some classes had ESL students mixed with native speakers. The ESL kids could turn in work like a kindergartner would do and get an A. Once a boy challenged his grade versus an ESL student. The teacher said she to take into account she was in ESL and grade her differently. The (white) boy got a B for a project that was vastly better. It was disgusting. South Lakes pumps up its national score with fake grades. ESL gangbangers can barely read or write and they are straight A-B students. I hate South Lakes with such a deep passion, no would not understand unless they lived year years of pure hell in that windowless prison.
