Actually my family way back in 1861 fought in a regiment formed in Ohio. So we were the winners as you said, but erasing history is a classic move of any number of dictators.

If you really want to preserve Civil War history, join the Civil War Trust and donate some money. You'll get a cool magazine every few months and they'll use the money to purchase land near battlefields and restore historical sites.

BTW, they won't be involved with things like keeping the Charlottesville statue or putting up confederate flags and statues by state capitols. Know why? Because they're not historic.

There is no comprehensive catalogue of all of America’s Confederate memorials. Wikipedia has a list, and Patrick Hogan at Fusion has started in on a new one, but both are incomplete. I’ve embarked on a similar project using the Historical Marker Database, a crowdsourced collection of “permanent outdoor markers” relating to historical events. There’s no easy way to know how close it is to being complete, but it is gigantic, with more than 13,000 entries related to the Civil War.

The problem with the Historical Marker Database is that it catalogs both Confederate and Union markers, and there’s no easy way to separate the two, at least algorithmically. (Many Union markers reside on former Confederate soil, and vice versa.) But there’s much to be learned from looking at how both sides have chosen to commemorate the war and how those commemorations have evolved across the decades. The animated map above shows how Union and Confederate markers accumulated over time and where. It also allows you to compare and contrast the language with which the two sections valorized their respective causes. As time progresses, monuments dot the map, accelerating at certain historical moments (around the Civil War centennial celebration, for example, which started in 1957).* The animation also highlights striking inscriptions from Union and Confederate markers. The monuments tell the story not just of Lost Cause sentimentality, but of a nation perhaps all too eager to put the conflict, and its underlying causes, behind it.

The North won the Civil War that Southern fools foolishly started, and the defeat of these miserable rebels was both deserved and decisive. Sadly, the North showed too much compassion and leniency in the aftermath of the war, and asshats ever since have taken that as license to behave just as foolishly as they did 150 years ago. Lock them up.

Who started? NO, the South seceded which was NOT an act of war. The North invaded the South and basically beat them into submission, because it knew it's own economy would have collapsed without the textile materials (cotton) and other raw goods produced in the South.

The North started the war. The Northern aggression caused the most unlikely persons to fight and defend their homesteads and farms.

Lincoln and starting all of this, then said that it was God's way of punishing the whole nation because of the institution of slavery.

Over 600,000 were lost in the war, every US citizen had a dead relative and many died shortly after the war due to disease and infection from battle.

Apparently Lincoln was wrong. We are still paying the price today because some just can't live peacefully

and somehow had to make a HUGE leap from a punk shooting up a church to historical memorials.

You've completely misapplied your insults. There were very good men who fought for the South. Try looking up Slaves who fought for their lands and Jewish Regiments who fought for the south. No they were NOT ALL WHITE BIGOTS as you say. The problem is not the flags or monuments. The problem is the lack of understanding of history and the need which was to fight or be killed without defending oneself as the Union stormed it's way Southward at the inception of the War. "Fight or Die" is what was on the table.
Tearing down historical markers and memorials is a waste of time, energy and money. It is ignorance akin to that of a delinquent child.

My understanding is that our Virginia State Flag was approved by a Confederate Virginia, and was inspired by the tyranny of the North towards the South.

It's just stupidity- typical confederate sympathizer / "lost cause" apologetics. As if the states in rebellion were just sittin' there defensively while the tyrants from the north came down and forced them into a fight. Well that's not what happened and there's been plenty written about the outset of the war.

Soon they'll be telling us it was actually the Union who fired upon their own troops at Fort Sumter.
