Commentary: Local Impact of Immigration

White House Advisor Stephen Miller took pains last week to point out that Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, “The New Colossus,” was not affixed to the Statue of Liberty when she was unveiled in 1886. He, of course, was correct.

The famed “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses” lines were added 20 years later, but have come to represent the American ideal that we are a nation of immigrants, enthusiastically welcoming those from any background who want to come here legally, work hard, and play by the rules. Here in Fairfax County, we traditionally not only embraced that ideal, but recognized it as the lifeblood of our astounding economic success story. But unfortunately, illegal immigration supporters have ruined our immigration efforts in their quest for cheap labor and political profit.

President Trump and the senators proposing the RAISE Act, a bill to reform legal immigration into the United States, recognize that uncontrolled increases in immigrants leads to economic decline and lower wages, not to mention higher crime rates and a host of other social ills. By making the 15-mile trip to Fairfax County, they can readily see that this is true.

In 1970 less than 4 percent of Fairfax’s population was foreign born. Today that number is over 30 percent, more than double the rate in the country at large. That dramatic increase in immigration led to the kind of dystopia that many predicted. In the early 1970s, Fairfax County was becoming an economic colossus that drove our state’s economy and was envied across the globe. Now, Fairfax can barely balance its budget, and schools have become overcrowded and underperforming. Household income is among the highest in the nation, yet crime by illegal immigrants continue to make the headlines, and our community is forced to pour ever increasing amounts of tax dollars to support those who come here for the government services we provide.

How did we get here? Undoubtedly we’ve capitalized on our proximity to, and our partnership with, the federal government. But the facts are quite clear that the dramatic increase in foreign-born immigration has accelerated our economic distress. Illegal immigrants in Fairfax are primarily working age or younger, more likely to work for minimum wage, more likely to commit crimes and participate in gang activity, and rarely contribute to economic growth in high-skilled careers that would improve our economy. In fact, they drive down wages in low-skilled fields, supporting technology firms worth billions and caring for the elderly as home care workers, displacing our young job-hungry citizens. Immigrants have overwhelmed many of our older neighborhoods, adding multiple families to homes that were designed and zoned to house single families. The results speak for themselves. Illegal immigrants have diminished our past successes and reduced our quality of life.

But Fairfax is not alone. Small towns, rural communities, and large cities across the country have also seen decreased economic vitality and opportunities created when illegal immigrants show up and take work from our citizens of all generations. Welcoming “the homeless, the tempest-tost” is the moral thing to do, but right here in President Trump’s own backyard we’ve proven that uncontrolled immigration is a fool's quest.

All of this is true...except that much of it would have happened even if all the unskilled newcomers had been legal...and except with respect to areas like Fairfax County much of it would have happened even if all the newcomers had been unskilled native born Americans.

The problem facing Fairfax County and facing other parts of this country is largely one of our own making. In the boom times employers were screaming for cheap labor and didn't care where it came from. The middle class and more affluent were willing not to question where it came from, because that cheap labor meant more for them. So what if underskilled undereducated Americans were getting screwed over or lower cost neighborhoods and their schools were being overrun. (That is the seeds of your Trump voter.) It was only when the economy began to slow down and the population of those unskilled newcomers hit a critical point where it started driving up the cost of public assistance that those newcomers started being seen as a problem by larger society. Emphasis on the "illegal" aspect then became a way for larger society to shift the blame for the problem away from themselves and on to the people they were a few years earlier happy to have.

ACTUAL COMMENTARY at link...

By Gerry Connolly, U.S. Representative (D-11) Wednesday, August 9, 2017

#White House Advisor Stephen Miller took pains last week to point out that Emma Lazarus’ sonnet, “The New Colossus,” was not affixed to the Statue of Liberty when she was unveiled in 1886. He, of course, was right in fact but wrong in spirit.

#The famed “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses” lines were added 20 years later, but have come to represent the American ideal that we are a nation of immigrants, enthusiastically welcoming those from any background who want to come here, work hard, and play by the rules. Here in Fairfax County, we not only embrace that ideal, we recognize it as the lifeblood of our astounding economic success story.

#President Trump and the senators pushing the RAISE Act, a bill to severely restrict legal immigration into the United States, would have you believe a dramatic increase in immigrants leads to economic decline and lower wages, not to mention higher crime rates and a host of other social ills. If anyone from the White House made the 15-mile trip to Fairfax County, they would learn the opposite is true.

#In 1970 less than 4 percent of Fairfax’s population was foreign born. Today that number is 30.7 percent, more than double the rate in the country at large. But that dramatic increase in immigration did not lead to the kind of dystopia the President envisions. Instead, since 1970, Fairfax County has become an economic colossus that drives our state’s economy and is envied across the globe. Household income is among the highest in the nation, crime rates remain at historic lows, and our community hums with the kind of economic dynamism that drives innovation and long-term productivity growth.

#How did we get here? Undoubtedly we’ve capitalized on our proximity to, and our partnership with, the federal government. But the facts are quite clear that the dramatic increase in foreign-born immigration has accelerated our economic success. Immigrants in Fairfax are primarily working age, more likely to start a business, less likely to commit crimes, and contribute to economic growth in both high-skilled and low-skilled fields, creating technology firms worth billions and caring for the elderly as home care workers. Immigrants have revitalized many of our older neighborhoods, adding $7,383 to the value of each and every home in our county, according to the Partnership for a New American Economy. The results speak for themselves. Foreign-born immigrants have fueled our success.

#But Fairfax is not alone. Small towns, rural communities, and large cities across the country have capitalized on the economic vitality and opportunities created when immigrants show up and get to work. Welcoming “the homeless, the tempest-tost” is the moral thing to do, but right here in President Trump’s own backyard we’ve proven that’s it the smart thing to do.

The OP makes more sense than the Congressman. Not surprised.

Gerry Connolly wrote, " Immigrants in Fairfax are primarily working age, more likely to start a business, less likely to commit crimes..."

Which certainly explains why the vast majority of our jail population are immigrants.

Notice what is missing from those stories? You don't see "farm coop is offering $20/hour plus housing for seasonal workers". Farm work is hard. It is short term. It is not surprising that, given a choice, people would opt for minimum wage service jobs that would allow them to settle in a community over slightly higher paying farm work. If free market capitalism actually worked then farm wages would be ratcheting up significantly to attract more labor. However farmers and the food industry is stuck in the mindset that farm labor should be cheap, and they are unwilling to make the adjustments in favor of farm workers needed to insure they have an adequate labor supply.

Boom: mic drop of truth!

But it's not just farm work that's repressed and devalued, it's pretty much everywhere. The forced narrative is- I went to college ik better than you.
And now- a shout out to the awesome Mike Rowe and the "Dirty Jobs" crew!!!

They are taking down so many other monuments, time to take down Lady Liberty. Might as well forget all our history and make this a whole new country.

Is it hard to effectively imitate a cheese shock fake news reporter or does selective hyperbole and bull shite just come naturally?

History isn't being erased, that's absured. Though, I don't recall anyone stepping up in righteous indentation over the decades long whitewashing of US history and it's genocidal pogrom against, and subsequent habitual breaking of legal treaties with, the First Nations. Talk about erasing and or glossing over the facts. Pot meet kettle...

The French were significant participants in the slave trade to the colonies. They also were responsible for various 'First Nation' massacres. Apparently, that part of history must have been "white washed" for you. The statue was a gift from the evil French; therefore, it needs to go.

Hispanics were THE major player in the European slave trade to the Americas. Hispanics divisions also fought in the Confederacy. That all seems to have been 'brownwashed.'

Anyone who writes such a news opinion article as the article originally appeared in the Connection Newspapers URL/weblink above do not have illegals doing illegal activity in their neighborhood.

Can't let people in forever. Country isn't getting any bigger. Ever see one of those "not more than this many persons, by order of the fire marshal" signs in auditoriums and whatnot? Need to cap it off at some point.

Unchecked immigration has had a damaging affect beyond Fairfax County's borders. In the 60's and 70's the County was a magnet for workers from Appalachia's poorest regions filling the ranks in construction and utilities. Some ultimately returned home, but others stayed becoming longtime residents advancing economically and supporting through their taxes everything that once was good about life here.

About Americans....they Only want Votes..no Matter how they get them for Democrats..They will destroy America if they are allowed to do it..Welfare..is a major reason...

Your right Many people from SW Va..West Va came here did well..working people..bootstrappers.No Welfare for them...I know of some that had 2 dollars in there pockets walking here in the early 60's and when they passed where multi-millionaires thru hard work family support love of God ..Others that lived more simply and raised families and were law abiding loving people..

America Is Full.. We need a 5 year break...from Legal immigration...and send any illegals that arrive back as soon as their caught.. the 1890's were one time in Americas history..the 20-teens are another..

Not a whole lot of illegal immigrants at Gerry Connolly's community pool in Mantua.

Maybe the pool should offer free passes to them.

And bus them in from the 7-11 in Annandale.
