Who needs statues when we now have the internet. Statues are a waste of valuable resources. White people only need one monument, the phalic symbol in DC. Overinflated, of course. But they can "have a dream".

While growing up in Maryland, I asked my mom why we allowed confederate flags and monuments in the south when they lost. My mom replied, "that it is testament to the strength of our democracy that we allow the freedom of expression even for views we disagree." I liked that and have grown to appreciate the historical significance and artwork of some of the monuments now that I live in Virginia. When I see a statue of a confederate soldier, I see not only the beauty of the artwork but a reminder of all the lives lost because the confederacy supported a vile institution. Current events make me feel like a portion of our population is about as tolerant as the Taliban who decimate historical sites because they don't share the views of the people who constructed them. I can't think of a monument more representative of the horrors of slavery of a bygone era than the Colloseum in Rome, yet I don't hear outrage that it is still stands today. I would like some more rational heads to point that out. Because we don't wish to wipe out history, doesn't mean we support slavery. For most of us, it is the exact opposite.

I just did a quick review of all the parks in Fairfax County. I would say a short glance reveals that at least a couple dozen of them have names associated with slavers. I would think FCPA would want to review their Master Plan and decide which parks will need to be renamed.

Also, I would conservatively estimate that there are in the neighborhood of 5,000 streets and public roads in Fairfax County that have names associated with slavers. I would think the FCBOS will need to form a task force to figure out a priority list of streets that will need to be renamed.
