Why doesn't George Mason have a football team?
Posted by: masonerer2 ()
Date: August 04, 2017 04:10PM

Sure they have the intermural team, which is actually pretty good, but I think they could really make waves if they had a collegiate team that competes at least at the FCS level. Towson and Liberty have pretty good teams, and I think GMU could outcompete with schools of that caliber for good prospects. They could probably even take on William and Mary and Richmond, which are really good at that level. Studies also show schools with collegiate football teams field more contributions from donors and also see more participation of various functions from alumnus. I know it would cost money, but it in the long run it could put GMU on the map.

Those threads are old and a lot has changed since then. Angel Cabrera has said point blank he won't get behind the idea of a football program. When pressed as to why, he coudln't give an answer. Cabrera is from Spain where college athletics doesn't matter. He is completely biased as well in thinking football doesn't matter. He's dead wrong and there are schools much smaller than GMU that field financially viable and even successful teams. ODU, Western Kentucky and even Liberty are examples of this. It can work, but you have to put the thought and the money into it. A small stadium can be built for this purpose for about the same price as the hotel they built across the way.

This analysis has been done numerous times. Even at the FCS level it would take $100 million and alumni commitment ranging from financing the program to actually attending a game. There is no interest.

There is plenty of interests on the part of alumnus and sponsors. The school administration doesn't want to have anything to do with thoughl.

JMU alum here. I in all honesty think Mason is on par with Madison. It's the football team that pushes us ahead. We are mostly a party school, with academics being a secondary or tertiary concern. Mason can push I think Madison and even Tech as one of the premier schools in VA. Get at least a second division team started, and see where it goes. You can kick the shit out of teams from smaller universities like Longwood, UVA Wise, VMI etc. until you work your way up the food chain to FCS competition.

ODU's program was built on student fees that were so high it caused the state legislature to pass a law capping how much of a state university's athletic department could be funded through fees. Now ODU is stuck in a conference with almost no TV and no regional rivalries, a tiny stadium, and declining season ticket demand. Mason is wise to learn from ODU's mistake; JMU too.

Having a football team is essential to developing a sense of community and attachment to a school. You haven't had a college experience unless you've gotten drunk with classmates and screamed for three hours together on an autumn afternoon. Plus, it helps create opportunities for black athletes to put off prison for a couple of years.

At Western md college, there was a huge push to get big ass Nigerians to play football.
This was the early 80's.
The players came and did not like the practices and wearing helmets/pads etc.

Like cool runnings bobsled movie, but with football.

Many recruits ended up quitting and playing soccer which they excelled at.

It was too much bad publicity for the ath dept to ship them back.

Attendance would be crap, and we don't need another college beltway team. Unless gmu wants to be practice dummies for umd. Check out that new indoor practice facility umd has. Now that's a real FB school!

we'll,you'd have to let about 50 niggers into the school, who read at a third grade level, and most have criminal records. They will smoke dope, sexually assault women, and do whatever they want. If you're o.k with that, then go for it.

On the contrary I think attendance would be excellent. There aren't any major football programs, collegiate or professional in the area and northern va is actually a big football market. It all comes down to money. Just need to find donors willing to chip in. If you build it they will come.

College park and Raljohn are both in the area, and Annapolis is close enough for a day trip to a major game. The University of MD and the Naval Academy are major programs, and there are several smaller ones around as well. Every year I attend a couple Redskins games, usually at least one Ravens game, and a couple U of MD and USNA games. There are plenty of options. I might attend a GMU game just for the novelty, but can't see it being a major draw.

Those are major programs for sure but still out of the way for many. Few have the money to regularly attend redskins games. William and Mary is a great example mason could follow. If a small community and institution like w&m can sustain a decent fcs program, I fail to see how mason wouldn't be able to do it.

I'm not sure if you've been paying attention, but ODU's football program has become more successful than anyone I think ever could have imagined. The team outplayed more accomplished schools like JMU, W&M and Richmond and has since been promoted to FBS and joined Conference USA. They even played their first bowl game (which they won) in February. Meanwhile, games have sold out almost every game since it's the schools football teams resurrection. They orginially had a team in the 1930's. It can be done, and the only ones that are against it are the cheap skates in state that don't understand that college sports are a boon to those who embrace them.

I still can't quite figure out why they made the switch from the ACC. Sure perhaps they get more money from tv rights, but MD doesn't have the coaching staff or talent to beat Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan etc. Should have stayed in the ACC. They could have at least relied on easy wins against virginia, wake forest, and syracuse annually.

Rather shallow statement! Of course it is the money. More specifically, it is Title IX. Div 1A schools depend on the tv money and football to fund the rest of the athletic program. The more successful the football team is, the more successful the program can be. It also enables schools to support Olympic event sports that do not generate fees but provides a generous amount of prestige to a school.

All that violence and aggression - we should not be celebrating it. Instead we should ban football as a sport and instead encourage children to steer their energies in a more positive, healthy, humanist direction.

Let's make banning football a central issue in the next presidential election - it's a winning theme for Democrats!

You may not have noticed but JMU won the championship for the 2016 season in their division. In 2015 JMU. W&M and Richmond were all ranked in their division and all three went to the championship series where W&M and JMU made it to the second round and Richmond made it to the semifinals.

GMU's big sport is Quidditch. GMU is infested with fags who like to put a surrogate broom/penis between their legs to make up for their inadequacy.

Truth is that if you didn't go to the school, nobody notices most Division 1-A either. Aside from the BCS when was the last time you arranged your schedule around a college football game?

^^ That is not a joke. WTOP was talking about it the other day. Apparently they play a version in which the brooms do not get airborne, but otherwise it's real. It's coed too. Interestingly GMU does not appear to have a croquet team; that must be too old hat.

I would certainly rather see the GMU football play than the Deadskins.

Even if they did start a program they would be on the level of a good High School football team in the area for a very long time. If you like football and want a Saturday experience adopt a big time D1 team like VA Tech or Penn State which are both back on track and should annually challenge for Conference championships and a national championship every three or four years. Both have really great game day experiences and is well worth the price of admission.

No self-respecting school can field a half - rate team and then expect donors to support the institution.

The breeze that would result from George Mason players as they SASHAY to & fro on a field would be like a
Category 1 hurricane!

An actual game would be more of a HISSY FIT.

I'm pissed that if I want to go tailgating and watch football in person, my only viable options are;

-College, Park MD to see Maryland

- Landover MD to see the Deadskins

-Charlottesville VA to see the Cavaliers

Mason's already got a "club" team that does pretty well. Mason could have a viable D-1 DCS, if not at least a div II team.

GMU is commuter school. It's doesn't have the money for a football team.

GMU male (term used lightly) population is from Korea, India, and far left skinny gay turd knockers. That team would be destroyed by a mediocre HS football team.

Their old coach, Joe Pascal, who was at Catholic for Years did not want to move up from club. There was momentum back then. He liked playing the roster games at club.
