Welding another set of leaf springs on a truck
Posted by: 150>>>>250 ()
Date: August 01, 2017 08:28AM

My f150 bottoms out with a heavy load in the bed.

Mechanic said to goto junkyard, get leafs from same truck, and then weld them on top of the existing ones.

Will this work or am I going to ruin the truck?

You could add a leaf to the existing leaf packs. This is the most common/cheapest thing to do.

Or get a 3/4 ton spring pack. Pretty sure any type of welding on springs would probably ruin them from the heat.

An F150? I thought you said you had a truck?

Call me when your Ford problems arise. My Dodge and I will pull you out and tow you home...

The F150 was powerful enough to haul Ford away from a potential bankruptcy back in 2007-9. How did that Dodge work out for Chrysler?

the welds may pop or rust

you have to buy the parts and clips the orig used

(you can get better leaves but they must be attatched to the truck in the very same manner the old ones are: NOT WELDED. of course parts the leaves attatch to (large pins at end) could be welded if done right: but no one in this area would do it right, is the problem)

say you get new springs but the mounts can't handle it, mounts tear off ?

the best case is: you need to examine an f150 by Ford that does 3/4 ton (duplicate it exactly) and if ford doesn't sell any model for it, you can assume it can't be done with f150

The springs are just part of the issue. The rear axle on the F-150 is "Semi-Floating vs the "Full Floating" axle on the F-250 or larger.

If you need more truck - Buy more truck.

Don't go fucking around on my highways with an over loaded piece of shit truck, and kill a minivan full of children.

Are we trying to run the best transportation manufacturing company...or are we trying to build the best truck?

The cheapest option to kind of look like a truck and kind of do some truck things...is an F150. It's built for the masses. It's built for fleet use. The cheaper something is, the more people will buy it. Ford designs, builds and sells to feed a volume business.

Now...if you want a real truck with proper mechanicals that is built to last...buy a Dodge. Not the cheapest truck for sale, it's just the best. Chrysler designs, builds and sells to feed a profit business.

GM slots in the middle. Their quality is better than Ford's but not as good as Dodge's. Their prices are between Ford and Dodge.

This is how The Big Three are all able to compete and have been in business so long. That...and gov't assistance. But, that's another conversation...

While this may be a valid point, I've never heard of a spring hanger breaking from anything other than rust. Spring hangers on an f150 should handle 3/4-ton springs just fine.

Mechanic is an idiot. You don't weld springs. You can fairly simply add or replace leafs to the spring pack or add helpers or bags. No welding involved.

Have had several Ford F 250s. They suck ass. From rusting frames to sagging doors to engines that either spit out spark plugs or never let them out, I'm done with these pieces of junk. Too bad Toyota doesn't make heavy duty trucks.

Drive the truck and park it. Pop hood and spray a lubricant(WD40 is NOT A LUBRICANT), into the spark plug area. As the motor cools overnite and the spark plug threads shrink a bit, the pb blast will seep down into the locked threads....easing removal.

Most dipshits don't know basic thermal compression/expansion principles and use excessive torque and break the plugs.

Problem solved you faggots

Add a leaf or two to stiffen it up. Replace your rear springs for the best ride. You don't want it to ride like a tank.

You bet. I guess you were using the wrong tig welder machine. There's a guide on this site https://toolsngoods.com/ about differences between tig and tig welding, you should check it before planning some serious work with metals or you might end up messing some parts... trust me, personal experience.

Yeah there's actually "diving machines" that can spot weld underwater. We are far beyond the days of ALVIN with the clunky claw machine arm. Small remotely-operated submarines can repair hulls as well as affix covert smuggling containers to unsuspecting cargo vessels. These utilitarian ROVs will assist and eventually replace the incredibly dangerous profession of underwater welding, fraught with perils from delta p to necrosis and sharks! Let the robots handle that I say.

Unless OP is looking to fix a truck that is at the bottom of lake accotink I think he's good without "diving machines" though

You must first know what underwater welding equipment you need. I understand that freshwater welding is different from room water welding and more those that are specialized for oil extraction platforms. On the other hand, if you need more information or learn more then check https://wisewelders.com/articles/welder-salary/ the page that will remove those doubts.
