Your Opinion on Local Government Issues

Fairfax is a pretty nice place to live, I've been here for 11 years now, and it can be boring, but it really is pretty nice. What do you guys feel like are the most serious problems facing the local government?

I just read that "Fairfax County Public Schools anticipates having to face a budget deficit of $100 to $200 million for FY 2011 (next school year)." That's pretty serious stuff....

FX County is a great place to live and it's a shame that the schools will suffer from the budget shortfalls. I was raised here, received a great education and chose to buy my first home in FX County, not Arlington or Alexandria. However, now I wish I had bought elsewhere. FX County has repeatedly ignored the flooding problems in my neighborhood, Huntington. The Army Corps of Engineers has done 3 studies on our flooding problems, at the request of FX County, since the 70's, all with the same result - FX hasn't properly regulated development resulting in the flooding of my neighborhood. This isn't the prettiest neighborhood in the County (by far) but that doesn't mean that it should be deliberately neglected by the County.

This neighborhood shares one same goal, we sought affordable living in one of the nicest Counties in the Country. We are a mixed neighborhood, white, black, latino, moroccan, el slavadoran, bolivian, etc. On my block alone we have teachers, plumbers, electricians, secretaries, lawyers, and students. And we also have a lot of families, some young, some growing, some old. Just because we are diverse doesn't mean we should be ignored. BTW, I have watched the crime trends from West Springfield (where I grew up) and Huntington has less crime. Why won't the County help us?

Fairfax cannot continue to fund the State. We generate a huge portion of revenue given our geographic size and yet the Commonwealth only supplies 20% of our K-12 funds.

Now we have to kill the goose - our outstanding schools. People are drawn to Fairfax for a lot of reasons but our schools are/were a major draw. Yes there is waste under Dale. Yes we have already cut the budget dramatically for 09/10. The cuts planned for 2011 are beyond the pale and will undo decades of building programs.

The public schools here are overrated anyways. I saw a month ago in the Post or WSJ that FFX county is the second highest most educated county in the country behind some county is the Seattle area.

In reality it’s the parenting, not the school system that has deserves the accolades. The FCPS ignores that, then abuses it to justify its bloated budget. The budget could probably 2/3's of what it is, and the FCPS could still maintain its reputation.

I believe the government should exterminate all NON-homosexuals! Something like a neo-holocaust for gay people. This would save the taxpayers alot of money! Where are some good gloryholes around here. If no gloryholes.... Where is the nearsest child adoption agency?

If we deny employment to illegals we will have far fewer problems. How many
kids in ESOL? 25,000?

The most serious problem facing local government is the local government. Those folks spent money like drunken sailors during the good times and now need to cut back to necessities.

But they're clueless.
