Anyone go to High School in Fairfax? And if so- what are the schools like? I'm moving to fairfax and I was just wondering what it'll be like.

I can't personally tell you about Fairfax County schools because I didn't grow up around here. But I think that you may have more luck if you ask specific questions. For example, will a specific subject or extra-curricular activity be offered? Or, you could tell us a little about your current school/area (number of people in your grade, location, etc) so that we know what to compare Fairfax schools to.

I'm moving this to the general forum so everyone can enjoy it.

Fairfax high schools are typically huge and well funded. Huge range of classes offered. Generally a very intelligent and well-informed student body. It is still high school so your specific experience will be determined largely by the people you befriend.

Are you a student or parent? There are 15-20 high schools in Fairfax County. While each school has its own personality, there are probably a handful of styles that all of the schools fall into. Athletics is pretty big at most high schools and there should be a diversity of activities no matter where you are. Generally excellent programs for drama, art, and music.

There are very large schools like Robinson and Lake Braddock (2800+ students), medium schools like Woodson and Fairfax (2200-2800) and small schools like Madison and Mount Vernon. FCPS tries to get a representative balance of socioeconomic groups in each school, but this is hard with the type of growth that the area has experienced. Some schools have larger minority, ESOL and free/reduced lunch populations than others. Overall, the system is primarily white and middle/upper middle class.

Some people will go on about gang issues and other violence, but it is really not something that dominates the conversation. Fairfax schools do not exist in a vacuum, so drugs and other less than desirable behaviors exist. This is still a county with more than 1 million residents and it has many of the same issues of similar small urban area. Overall, however, it is still a very good system.

I'm at a loss here. School buses, by law, MUST be yellow...the official name of the color is "National School Bus Chrome".

Flint Hill (a private school in Vienna) has some navy blue "Activity" buses used only for field trips and such....NOT to transport students to and from school.

There is a BRAND of school buses named Blue Bird and FCPS still has quite a few of them....but they are yellow.

I think you'll be okay at any Fairfax County high school except Stuart, Annandale, West Potomac, and Mount Vernon.

Stuart actually has a lot of upside, but the diverse cultural makeup of the school seems to trump this. I would, however, add Hayfield and, potentially, Herndon to your list.

Gee. You have everything from the high school in Beverly Hills 90210 to the high school in The Substitute where the teacher got so pissed at the students he started beating them.

No don't add Hayfield. Now that half the students are gone, it's not so crowded.Plus they just renovated and it's really attractive now.

I went to Chantilly. Never going near there again.

But that's because I'm a dork and easy to pick on, not because the school itself sucked.

If your kid is smart....have him/her apply to TJSST.

A diploma from TJ will get him/her almost automatic admission to the best colleges.

Fairfax High School in the City of Ffx is very nice. Chantilly has some issues but is still amazing. Avoid Mt.Vernon HS at ALL costs.

Oakton is a pretty good school. So as Chantilly and Cville. Avoid Herndon. undecided about westfield, good athletics but the people tho.

Fairfax County is huge, but the best High Schools, in order, are: Langley, McLean, Madison (in Vienna), Oakton.
