What's the better fishing tackle store...Bass Pro Shops or Cabela's?

They're both equidistant from me so, proximity is not a problem...

Depends on who has what on sale.

BPS probably has a little edge as far as fishing stuff.

Went to the Cabelas in Gainesville the other day, not impressed with the fishing section.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for, I always thought Gander was the best of the box stores.

Cabelas is better for hunting products overall in my opinion and BPS has a better overall fishing selection. That being said, Cabelas stands behind their own products better than BPS does.

If you are looking for freshwater gear, they are both about the same but BPS has a better selection of saltwater stuff.

The newer cabelas stores are smaller in size, that way they can build more of them over their original model of massive stores. I think the closest one is in Hamburg PA.

Cabelas and Bass Pro are merging anyway. All the same crap soon.. Preferred Cabelas, sad times

I get my tackle second-hand from commercial auctions. Last week, Arthur Treacher's fleet was auctioning off a bunch of drag nets and long line gear - outriggers, blocks and tackle, gaffs, etc.

I made out like a bandit and came home equipped for the upcoming cod season!

I buy most of my stuff second-hand as well. You can get really good deals at yard sales. I have gotten $200 worth of gear for $5, a lot of people just don't know better.

It's less the equipment and more knowing where and how to fish it. Unless you do something illegal, that is.

sometimes you see the Mexis at the creeks & rivers at night w/a big flashlight. That's illegal, but since most of 'em R illegal from the get go, they don't care. They have the best luck, but the big flashlight helps them.

I can afford the best...of everything. So, why take chances with sub-standard equipment?

I'm sorry that $800 Shimano is just out of your reach...

For fishing gear it's Bass Pro and it's easy to order on line. Why would anyone spend 800 buck on a reel? The thing IS going to break so why not go with a throw away like Okuma 35 series and an ugly stick?

I've caught a lot of fish. I've lost even more fish. The likelihood of landing a fish is directly proportionate to the quality of your tackle.

Sure, Mexicans catch fish with a beer can, a 40 year old piece of mono and a paper clip...and at the same spot, I'll catch my limit inside 30 minutes with fewer lost fish.

Why the fuck else would someone buy the best? We're trying to land fish here...not swing our dicks.

For freshwater you are probably right. In fact I like Ugly Stick rods for certain applications (like for the nice blue cat above)....get into the salt water and you are taking about a different ball game as far as reels are concerned. Mid range Penn/Shimano/Diawa's will last more than a couple of trips. You don't need a $800 Stella, but a $120 reel is a better investment than 3 Okuma Avengers.

Tie in to 30lb redfish on that Okuma and it will melt the felt drag washers and strip the main gear. See ya $40.

Of course if all you catch is small fish.......

Nice fish, Fish Slayer. Notice I said fish...because I only see one fish in that shot.

Come back and post about the state of your cheap ass gear after you've caught 100 of those on that same rig. You won't though because you can't put that kind of stress on cheap gear. There's a reason quality is expensive.

Also, I would avoid pulling fish that big out of the Potomac. The last time I did that was '68 and a big old Negro stuck a pistol in my face and demanded "his" fish.

That is a nice sized catfish. But in all honesty, I would be a bit cautious of eating one from so close to the city. Being bottom feeders, they do eat a lot of crap. The last time I was in a boat around DC, I saw a refrigerator floating down the river. Just saying.
Anyway, I saw this thread yesterday, but didn't click on it. Then this morning I was cruising the internet and saw this picture, and instantly thought of this thread.
Never been to Bass Pro, but I thought that someone might enjoy this.

All,

Fishing is gay. Really stupid. Worse than bowling. Although many people who fish also bowl. And listen to country music. All really, really gay.

Thanks,

You are welcome.

Seriously, fishing is gayer than two guys blowing each other.

Like super gay.

Gay like NASCAR. Gay like bluegrass music. Gay like... you get the point.

It is just really, really gay. If you catch fish for fun, you should probably just go drown yourself instead.

I hear you guys. I've done pretty well with my Okumas and when they break I toss em and get new ones. In the salt I use the Quantum reels, 80 to 170 each and heavier ugly sticks. For shark we have pretty heavy tackle with free spooling pen reels. Those rigs were pretty spendy about 350 each with line. We generally break those out when we are in Florida especially in the keys. Fishing can be a pretty expensive hobby. I have had to chase fish around with the boat a couple of times.
