Paid Parking Coming to Tysons Corner Center
Posted by: Tysons G ()

I'm one of the managers at a large retailer at Tysons Corner Center. Just had a meeting with Tysons Corner Center management where they informed us paid parking is coming to Tysons in January 2018! The fully automated system will go live the second week of January after the Holiday rush! Parking rates are still being finalized but initial rates are:

1 - 2 Hours - $3.00
3 - 4 Hours - $5.00
5 - 7 Hours - $7.00
8 - 10 Hours - $10.00
11 - 14 Hours - $16.00
14 - 24 Hours - $21.00

Apparently, there is a big problem with commuters parking at Tysons and using Metro! Customers will be able to use their phone or pay by credit card via kiosks that will be located throughout the parking garage and mall. (Hopefully the system at TCC won't be a cluster like Reston Town Center.) Anchor stores (Macy's, Nordstrom's, Bloomingdale's) are being told they can't validate parking to ensure the system is fair for all customers (their words).

Employees will be offered a monthly parking pass at a discount rate of $150 per month!

Should that come to pass, Amazon.com will see even more of my money.

I'm Johnny McMoneybags because I keep my money, even when it comes to "small" costs.

This will kill business and sales, and be terrible for the mall, merchants and customers. Bad decision.

If you can't afford to park, you can't afford to shop. Five bucks for three to four hours of parking? That's not bad. A little bacon cheeseburger from Five Guys is more than that!

It's a big enough hassle getting out of those garages, even when it's not busy. This will just make it more of pain. Those toll gates have been in there for years now, I was wondering when they were going to start using them.

Just do what I do and have your driver let you out at one of the entrances. No parking lot hassle.

Observant ones don't. I know non-observant Jews who eat bacon, cheeseburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, ham and cheese sandwiches, and lobster. They can eat the shit out of some lobster!

Unless they're kosher bacon cheeseburgers.

More customer traffic to Fair Oaks Mall with free parking. Though some things can easily be bought online or on Amazon, other things like clothes or some other major purchase like to go in person to try out (returns can be hassle sometimes if have to do through the mail or costly if no prepaid label). Also if want the restaurant experience, doing it online through delivery is just not the same sometimes.

Is this the one that has the Maggianos and Ritz Carlton in it? I park there a lot and would be pissed if they started paid parking.

Its the mall with Nordstrom, Macy's and Bloomingdale's. A sales associate at Norstrom's confirmed tonight that pay parking was starting in January.

To me the people effected by this are the employees that work at Tyson. While costumers who only come a few times a month. Making it not really an issue. The problem is according to this employee will have to payh 150 every month just to park. Which to me if I am still working at Tyson when this happens I will have not chhoice to leave due to this. That is an expanse that on top of gas just makes working at Tyson not worth it.

From another perspective, it's an admission fee for the mall to account for lost revenue.

If this is truely about Metro, mall patrons should get their parking credited upon a purchase from a store on the inside.

Perhaps your next stop should be NOVA - at an English class.

What about the Tysons II complex? There are a load of garages there for businesses in the towers, and some of the lots were free for those patronizing any of the tower businesses.

Thanks for the warning...I seldom go to Tysons if at all but for sure, I won't be going i the future. It will probably deteriorate like Springfield if people can't drive there.

Unless the businesses pay for parking for their workers, they may have a hard time hiring anybody that does not take the metro in from points east or west.

Weren't they going to build a tunnel between the Tysons malls? I seem to recall hearing that was part of the redevelopment plan, with airport-style conveyor belts. When that happens then you could just park free and walk to the other one.

How to do it right, if you absolutly must doi.
Posted by: Radon's Daughter ()

1) Parking for less than 2 or 3 hours is free and painless. This would probably work even if the first 5 hours were free. The idea is that you can't park for free and go to DC to work or spend they day at the Smithsonian. The painless part is important. Reston Town Center totally screwed the pooch on the painless part.

2) Staying beyond the free period gets expensive if you stay 8 or 9 hours. Has to be expensive enough to discourage commuters or for you to find it worth your while to let them park.

3) Seeing a movie or eating dinner gets you parking validation for more free time. You get to skip this whole nonsense if the first 5 hours are free. Almost no other activity needs parking validation.

4) Some system for the employees to get out free.

Do it this way and I don't car if they implement pay parking AND they can keep their parking available for shoppers. Try to run it to generate parking revenue and I won't have any reason to park - and they won't get parking revenue.

Excerpt from above link

Recently, someone who claims to be a retail manager at the mall revealed on local message board Fairfax Underground (warning: un-moderated) that paid parking is starting in January. The reason? There are too many commuters taking the spaces.

However, representatives from Tysons Corner Center insist that paid parking isn't coming. "There is no validity to this online rumor," says Bob Maurer, senior marketing manager for the mall. "Tysons Corner Center doesn’t intend to initiate paid parking in January."

Doesn't intend to initiate paid parking in January isn't exactly a strong denial.
