Stealing food continues in FCPS! Cameras will stay!

Fairfax To Keep Cameras In School CafeteriasFAIRFAX, Va. (AP) ¯ Surveillance cameras will remain in Fairfax County high school cafeterias for at least another year.

The school board voted last week to keep the cameras. They were installed last fall at six high schools in response to reports that hungry students had stolen $1.2 million worth of food the previous school year.

School officials say the cameras helped divert some losses, but food theft is still a costly problem. Fairfax schools face a projected budget shortfall of $176 million for the next school year.

Penny McConnell, director of food and nutrition services, says the program could be expanded after another year of surveillance at the six trial schools.

Don't worry about the projected budget shortfall of $176 million. McDonnell will sell State liquor stores to make up the money.

They might be that hungry. However, some may be doing it for the sake of stealing.

I remember the french fries were really good, but other than that, forget it!

so they are using cameras so they dont get 1.2 mil worth of food stolen to help with the budget shortfall. but how expensive is it to run the camera systems throughout the county. i feel like it would at least approach the same cost if not cost more.

some of the stuff is pretty good. fries, mozzarella sticks, smiley potatoes (which they don't have any more), and the pumpkin pie during thanksgiving are all pretty good. they raised the price of fries from $1 to $1.25, and they give you way less than last year. $1.25 worth of fries at school lunch is equal to about 50 cents worth of mcdonalds fries.

Corrected for you reading ease;

Some of the stuff is pretty good; fries,
mozzarella sticks, smiley potatoes (which they
don't have any more), and the pumpkin pie during
Thanksgiving. This year, they raised the
price of fries from one dollar to $1.25, and the portions are smaller than last year. Today, $1.25 worth of fries at school lunch is akin to 50 cents worth of
Mcdonalds fries.

When i was in jr high at franklin middle back in antiquity, I was involved in plenty of food theft. we had a sort of little ring going... this one dude would steal shitloads of snickers ice cream bars, nutty buddies, fries, drinks, whatever was reasonably packed to be concealable. He would slip it into a shirt he left tucked in but unbuttoned. Then, he would act like robin hood and give most of it away.

After we saw him get away with it month after month, we all joined in, in all like a dozen people robbing the cafeteria blind; we started passing items between multiple people before they would be concealed, so anyone who might be watching at first would lose interest.

Finally our freshly-re-emboldened ringleader got busted when he decided to go apeshit one day and conceal like 50 bucks worth of food. One of the cafeteria workers noticed he had gained a substantial amount of body mass since he walked in, and they told our VP, and the kid was busted. To his credit, he never turned anyone else in.

I attended Thoreau in the 80's and we would put utensils at the bottom of the salad serving bowl and other serving devices to see how long they would stay there. One time the spoon stayed there for 2 weeks. There's their money saving. Reuse salad for 2 weeks, cause damn; who wants to steal that!

If you mean I am a thief because I steal hearts and minds - then I am guilty as charged. Take me away.

Heaven Fobid they actually spend money on EDUCATION

Tell everyone to bring a bag lunch. Kids who qualify for reduced meals - hand them a bag lunch prepared off site and delivered daily. Money saved. Obesity problem solved.

Why the hell do they even have food service in Fairfax Co schools?

Kids can brown bag it or FCPS could see if any private companies are interested in running the school cafeterias. If not, brown bag it or older kids could walk to nearby McD's, 7-11s, etc.

Between contracting out transportation, food service, and custodial positions, FCPS could get rid of THOUSANDS of employees and their expensive benefits!

Let's do it now and put every possible cent into the classrooms!!

Because you'd have these retarded fucking helicopter parents bitching and moaning about how little Cody can't pay attention in school because he's not getting proper nutrition.

A couple of details are needed on this issue.

1. The cost to install the cameras was $100,000. What is the labor cost to monitor the lunch lines in all of the schools? Cha ching.

2. The schools that were selected for this "pilot program" were irrational. Mclean High School had one of the highest theft rates based on the survey, yet no cameras were installed there-strange, huh? I guess the parents at Mt Vernon and Annandale don't compain as much.

3. McConnell-who runs the food service area and probably makes $125k, did a pathetic job of justifying the original installation of the cameras and also in her "follow up" study. Even the SB members complained at how unprofessional her report was.

4. Why is all of the theft being blamed on the kids? Lots of comed meals are given to staff which are not accounted for. The number of adult meals served has DROPPED 20% in the last two years. Are teachers brown bagging or are they not paying for their food?

5. No mention of theft at the wharehouse, loading dock, waste, etc.

Food Service is the ONLY department that actually makes a PROFIT each year.

This is yet another example that morons are on the School Board and running large departments.

I say they switch to MRE'S. They would be a lot easier to monitor and inventory.Good enough for our troops, good enough for lil billy and jane.
