I'm confused, is Fairfax County a republican or democrat county?

I'm confused, is Fairfax County a republican or democrat county?

The anchors/reports on CNN, MSNBC, and FOX all refer to Fairfax County
as a "heavily Democratic county in Northern Virginia"..... (when talking
about the way people voted for Allen or Webb last night)

If that's the case, why do so many people vote for Republican congresmen?
And if I'm not mistaken, Bush had the majority of the votes in Faifax County
in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections?

Thanks! :)

It's mostly Democrat.........not sure about yesterday's results....but I would guess it's upward 65%+. I believe FFX Co. voted for Kerry in the '04 election as well. -§

I'm pretty sure Kerry took Fairfax County. The County is very educated, so the wisdom of keeping senior congressmen in office is considered when voting. Wolf and Davis have been around a while and replacing them with rookies may be risky. This is probably the reason why Moran is still in office... I doubt everyone who votes for him has any love for him personally. In Allen's case I think NoVA took some of the racism comments to heart. Coupling that with an upswing in Republican scandal stories, Webb (who is a conservative Democrat anyway) was an easy alternative to choose.

But the race was still extremely close... Webb didn't get as big a boost from NoVA as Tim Kaine did over Kilgore for the governorship. And don't forget that the Democrat bloc now taking power as a group is very different from past Democrat groups. In order to win a lot of these races they had to let in a lot of right-leaning members to provide the alternatives that red areas were looking for. You won't see any serious rollback efforts on gun control or abortion in the next two years because many of the new members are anti-abortion and pro-Bill of Rights.

It will be interesting to see what the Democrats come up with, given that they now have no one to point the finger at to blame for things... they have the House, they have the Senate, and Rumsfeld is gone. If they don't put in a really productive session ahead of the 2008 elections they may find themselves back in the minority if the Republicans conduct an effective internal house-cleaning.

Most of the areas where welfare is still king vote for democrats. They know who takes care of them when the checks, free housing, government programs and food stamps come out.
I would hardly call the residents of public housing and route one highly educated souls, but they do know a free meal when they see one.

They represent a small percentage of DEMS. It's the more educated and affluent DEMS that actually get out and vote. You could say the same about honky-tonks in the Deep South living off farming subsidies because they can't make corn grow. -§

I could say that about the farmers in the south but I have respect for them since they have the desire to work. Plus I dont see too many MS13 gangs and crips forming out in those deserted corn fields.

according to the polls the NoVa populace is more democratic and voted for Webb. The South voted mostly for Allen. Make of that what you will.

Proportionally, there's more unemployed in rural areas than urban. Besides, farming isn't as difficult as it once was. No wait....you're right. Watching corn grow really throws my back out. LOL!

I echo the comment above about KKK. Do you hate macacas like good 'ol Georgie Porgie Puddin' Pie? -§

"Besides, farming isn't as difficult as it once was"

How would you know if you never did it? I bet all you know about farming is what you saw on Green Acres and the old guy down the block who grows tomatoes.

You are prob one of the same type who tells the police how to do their job even though your knowledge is limted to watching crime shows on tv.

Farming, believe it or not, is very technical. It, like anything else, is only "easy" when you are competent at it.

I completely agree with the spirit of your comments. Fairfax is indeed overrun by MS13; and by lazy welfare swine in general. One can't turn on the news anymore without hearing about gang warfare on Route 1. Everyone knows that the Krispy Kreme is a hangout for the Hybla Valley Bloods (represent.) The Outback Steakhouse is all Vatos Locos. And the worst part is that in other parts of the country, when people hear the words "Fairfax County," all they think of is our soaring homicide rate, our decaying neighborhoods, our crumbling schools, and our open air drug markets.

Let's be frank: Fairfax is at a crossroads. Arlington, our Stalinist neighbor to the east, regularly gives about 70% of its votes to Democrats. Do we really want to become like Arlington? Drowning in welfare mothers? I was driving down Wilson Boulevard the other day, and I thought I was in a third-world country. Block after block of broken-down public housing. I pulled up to a stoplight, and a young liberal in a dirty suit tried to wash my windshield with a copy of the Constitution. Then he asked for a hand-out. There's Arlington in a nutshell. And the future of Fairfax, if we don't take action.

No, but they think they are. Walk into any bar in Manassas and you can DEFINITELY tell they are socially oriented toward our southern brethren. Accent, clothing, behavior etc is nowhere near the snotty attitude of true Northern Virginians.

There is a geographic Northern Virginia (found here http://www.virginia.org/site/features.asp?FeatureID=7&Rgn=14000) and a socioeconomic Northern Virginia. You can tell you have crossed the boundary line when you look around and no longer see white women in expensive cars yapping on the phone and tailgating you. Eastern Prince William along the 95 corridor is Northern Virginia, but blue-collar Manassas is not. It's an island of rural in a sea of metro-suburbia... they don't even talk like us even they are only one exit down I-66 from us (though it is a number of miles between the last FFX county safepoint and Manassas).

I had friends from college who lived in Strasburg and Front Royal, and they all said they were from Northern Virginia and I said HORSESHIT. You are in the northern part of the state but you ain't NoVA. If you can't make a toll-free call to a Washington DC number from a landline phone then you are not in NoVA.

"If you can't make a toll-free call to a Washington DC number from a landline phone then you are not in NoVA."

In 1985 the standard was:

"If you have to dial 1+703 to call a Fairfax number then you aren't in NOVA"

In 1989 or so when extended area calling was implemented the standard became:

"If you can't make a local call to a Fairfax number then you aren't in NOVA"

I guess the standard changed again in 1999 when GTE and Bell Atlantic merged, and Fairfax numbers became local calls from PW County.

Oh, by the way, Eastern PW County cannot make a toll-free call from a landline to a 202 number. So you have contradicted yourself...

I imagine, if previous history is any indication, they and the rest of PW county will be able to in a few years.

In a few years very few people will have landlines I would imagine, and least non-VOIP ones. The area-code analogy isn't a great one, just an example. To make it easier, NoVA is Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, and Loudoun County (not sure about Sterling though). Anything outside of that is just NoVa-like. Once you cross the Occoquan River things begin to change so strike any PW reference I made above... they are lumped in with Stafford.

The reasons that these changes to calling areas were made are social ones. People in Fairfax and PW Counties call each other a lot more than they did 18 years ago[1]. That seems to indicate to me that Fairfax and PW Counties are a lot more connected, and alike, than they were 18 years ago.

[1]I should point out that one of the conditions of the merger between GTE and Bell Atlantic is that calls between PW County and Fairfax be made local. Presumably this is because a lot of people asked for it.

[2]I should also point out that it's been my observation that local calling areas are generally set up so that exchanges that get a lot of traffic between them are in the same local calling area. The phone company gets to recoup these costs by increasing your local monthly recurring charge based on the number of exchanges that are local to you.

It just depends - - my precinct has about 3,000 regular voters; it is always very close, which constantly amazes me. Typically, I have seen general election differences in the low single digits -- maybe 15-20 votes or less -- for years. Obama won my precinct in 2008 by about 200, which was a notable exception to the rule.

Fairfax is not democratic or republican or tea party or independent. It is nothing because virginia you do not tell your party or sign up so no real party, just that people who win the elections say they are from one side or the other one.
