Car Buying in Fairfax: Processing Fee?

What on earth is a processing fee of $599 for in Fairfax car dealerships?

Are these legally mandated or a bunch of crap?

You can get them to waive that fee by getting up from the desk and start walking out, but don't make the move until you get the best price on the car. Otherwise they will inflate the price of the car to offset dropping the fee.

Process fees are PURE PROFIT. and there is no law that requires them. Maryland allows process fees, but the Maryland has a cap on them that is much lower than Virginia allows.

Try a buying service - Many of those services require the dealer to drop the fee.

A bunch of BS. Just like the annual luxury car tax. I paid taxes when i bought the damn car. I pay taxes for every tank of gas.

You may have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But forgot to mention they'll tax you six ways from Sunday. And just when figure it out, you die. They will then tax you after death. End of life processing fee.

You tell them, you want the sale, you drop the fee.

If you spend a few hours wearing out the salesman on a busy Saturday starting at about 11 am, the walking away scheme works like a charm. Right now the Toyota lots are jammed with inventory, plus the 2018's are about to be unleashed.

A fair deal for me is $150.00 over invoice, no process fees, all rebates and incentives, 0% rate on finance - Free Gap coverage.

Don't buy those "Protection Package" items - None of them.

Processing fee is pure profit. MD caps that piracy at $300 while there is no cap in VA.

Find incentives at http://www.nadaguides.com/Cars

Car dealers do not pay full invoice and still make money.

Car salespeople have a difficult time these days with all of the information available on the internet. There's buying clubs, KBB, Edmunds, plus various other websites more than willing to expose all of the trade secrets, rebates and tricks used in the industry.

Used cars seems to be where the real profit is at, at least for the sales people. When people come in to a dealership with a trade in, they are given about 60% of the blue book value of the car. Ya know, the dealer has to make a profit. Then, the dealers add in additional mark up, just because the know people are going to haggle over a used car, because there's going to be blemishes, marks, dings, etc.... People with poor credit will pay the sticker price on a used car AND pay a higher percentage rate on the loan, because they suck at getting their credit score up.

USED CARS IS WHERE IT'S AT! There's FAT in them there cars!

Negotiate one price - the out-the-door total price.

Use any of the many car buying services, they work well. No dealing with any of those B.S fees.

I walked on a $160 processing fee back in the day. I told the sales guy I wanted the out-the-door price and he assured me that that is what I got. Then I sit down to write up the sale paperwork and this pops up. Out the door I went. They called me about 30 minutes after I got home and offered to split the difference.

I went back because I had haggled them down to 1% over invoice (which also has a dealer profit line in it as well of about $500), so they ended up making about $620 profit on a truck that had been sitting in their lot for 8 months. They lost money on that truck.

Costco. Buy anything and everything you can from Costco's buying services. Cars. Vacations. Garage doors. Siding. You'll get a great price and Costco will intervene if you get screwed and fight for you.

+1...don't pay attention to the individual subtotals..you want to focus on the final OTD price. Just picked up a CRV-EX AWD last night...OTDB price was about $500-800 less than other peoples' on Edmund's auto forum. They also allowed me to put the whole amount on my 1.5% cash back reward VISA.

I don't care what fees they tag on, and whether the money goes to the dealer, the salesman or the state. All I care about is what I have to write the check for. I always tell the salesman to give me his out the door price. I have found most salesmen are happy to do so. ddpjmIf he can't figure that out I ask for a different salesman.

BTW the dealer processing fee is just one of the bullshit tag on fees they hit you with. The only item they are required to add to the car price is sales tax, and they only have to do that if you are not titling the car yourself.

Well, since you are rich and want to show off, you should be proud to pay the luxury tax.

Luxury car tax starts at around 30k, you dick. Almost any car above low to affordable is considered luxury by tax authority. I already paid the tax, asshole.

What is this "luxury car tax"? My understanding is the old Federal luxury car tax was repealled, the Virginia sales tax, or the Virginia personal property tax?

Why is the poster the asshole if you paid the tax? You live in NoVa and bought the car.

Only a Trumptard would lie about paying a non-excitant tax.

You don't need to pay those bogus fees, just find a hungry enough dealer. Might take more time and work on your part and some travel.

Have fun with the fees and screw overs from the dealership
and have fun with the insurance and esp. the car tax every year on a nearly new vehicle -- then enjoy all the other administrative bullshit you have to put up with -- jumping through hoops, emissions, DMV, safety .. etc.

The powers that be have made it very cumbersome to own a car in FFX county.

Processing fee = administrative fee = pure bullshit.

The only 'fee' that is legit is the destination charge (usually $900 or $950).

Any money made on the sale of the vehicle goes to pay the people that process or administer anything. That is what I always tell the dealerships. And I also tell them that they aren't getting any of this money from the deal they make with me, but will get plenty of administrative fees from the 80% of the people who pay way over invoice.

But I also tell them that I will help them make their monthly numbers (by buying at the very end of the month. Monday or Tuesday is best). And by giving 10/10s across the board on the manufacturer survey (which nets the dealership huge bonuses and has serious consequences if they don't get top marks).

Always pay less than advertised invoice. The dealership still makes plenty of money to pay their admins and processing people. They can shove the administrative and processing fees up their ass.
