One man has died and another man is still fighting for his life after a crash involving a box truck on the Capitol Beltway Inner Loop in Fairfax County, Virginia, police say.
Just before 4 p.m. Saturday, a pickup truck towing a boat pulled off on the median area at the split of westbound I-495 and I-95 South/I-495/I-395 North in Springfield, Virginia State Police said.
Two men were outside the pickup truck working to re-secure the boat on the trailer, when a box truck drifted into the median area and struck the boat and 52-year-old Leonard Schultz, according to state police. Albert Schultz, 24, was also struck during the impact of the crash.
Both men were taken to Fairfax INOVA Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Leonard Schultz died at the hospital, state police said a few hours after the crash. Albert Schultz is still being treated. Leonard was Albert's uncle, state police said.
The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
The box truck driver, 42-year-old Carlos Alberto Garcia, also was not injured. Garcia has been charged with reckless driving.
Fairfax County police said I-95 South was shut down before the mixing bowl and traffic was backed up to Maryland.
WTOP reports all lanes are now back open and the police investigation has ended.

graduated with Lenny and played ball with him at Madison. Never shared the field with anyone that worked harder to make himself and his team better. Lenny was the classic teddy bear/tiger as he knew how to flip a switch and that switch went on the second he put on a helmet. A state finalist wrestler and the heart and soul of the 1982 Warhaks that spent a fair share of time at #1 spot in the WaPost Top 20. Lenny didn't get All-Met his senior year but he threw every lead block that sprung Doc Basil to becoming All-Met POY.

Lenny was one of the most genuine guys you would ever meet. Lenny exuded an enthusiasm that was beyond contagious with his main goal being that every individual maximized their potential. Lenny made you believe you had another notch. Lenny made you believe you could pull off the impossible.

Last story goes back to Mad vs TC in Regionals 1982 in driving rain. TC goes up late in the 4th and Mad gets the ball for one final drive with rain driving straight into our faces. Not sure the number of rushes but Doc Basil did break one pretty nice carry but he was having a tough time making his signature plant and cut back move. Mad rode Lenny down that field at five yards a pop for 70 yards. Lenny looked maniacal running the ball carrying guys 3-4 yards past first contact every run. He would emerge from each pile screaming back to the sideline to keep feeding him.

I was an LB so I see the world differently than some of my offensive brothers but everyone that was at that game knows that when we reached the TC 15 yard line, we were three Lenny carries from continuing our march to a state championship. Coaches believed we had TC set up for play-action. First pass was close, but on 2nd down, everybody knew the fun was over and time to feed Lenny. Nope. Incomplete pass, sack, sack ball game. I love my boys but have always believed that Mad would have a state title trophy in their case if we continued to feed Lenny.

Bruh...1982 was 35 years ago. Anybody who can remember playing football that long ago, much less someone can remember it with that kind of detail is a person who also peaked 35 years ago.

This was a tragic accident.

Carlos should not be ticketed or punished in any way as he has suffered enough. We embrace Carlos as all that is good with Fairfax County. Anyone that says anything bad about him is hateful and we do not have a place for hate in Fairfax County.

TC was a very tough opponent in those days.

I went to MV and we won the State Championship over Kempsville in '83.

I didn't play football, but it was cool to go down to the ODU Campus and watch the game.

I can't fathom the sociopathic nature of these young trolls making light of the death of someone who positively impacted the life of a plethora of young men.

Because they are little douche nozzles living in their parents basement (and they like it) and wouldn't even think of saying in person what they post on here.

Clearly, you have no memories yet, especially if your parents are less than 35... that probably makes you in your mid teens.

Some 40 years from now, your fondest memory will probably be that time you manned up and got on Fairfax Underground from your parents computer, and told somebody off, calling him "Bruh"...

Some of my fondest memories are of high school AND college sports, as well. Did I peak then? Hardly. You might find it hard to believe, but people do go from high school to great things, but if in fact you played sports at a high level, whether they be high school or college, not much else will beat that in terms of memories...money, women, family...all good stuff, but nothing wrong with good memories of competing at a high level.

Get some memories first before you start knocking others.
