They Should have got off the interstate and that place is the worst place in the world to stop.I almost hit a dope who pulled into the main lanes..when they opened that exit..and many were doing it over the next few months till people got used to it..

WASHINGTON — One person was killed and another hurt with life-threatening injuries after a crash on the Inner Loop of the Beltway in Springfield, Virginia, Saturday.

A spokeswoman for Virginia State police said a pickup truck that was towing a boat had pulled off into the median on westbound Interstate 495, near the portion of the Beltway known as the “mixing bowl.”

Leonard A. Schultz, 52, of Ashburn, Virginia, and Albert Schultz IV, 24, got out of the truck in order to re-secure the boat when a box truck drifted into the median, hitting the boat and one of the pedestrians. The other pedestrian was struck in the impact of the crash, according to state police.

Both pedestrians were taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital for life-threatening injuries. Leonard A. Schultz died at the hospital. Albert Schultz IV is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Leonard Schultz was the football coach and a special education teacher at James Madison High School in Vienna, Virginia, from which he graduated in 1983. He took over as coach in 2011.

Albert Schultz IV graduated from the Vienna school in 2011. He attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

The driver of the box truck, Carlos Alberto Garcia, 42, of Woodbridge, Virginia, was not hurt.

State police said the driver of the pickup, Edward Schultz, who is the father of Albert and the brother of Leonard, did not get out of the vehicle and was not injured in the crash.

Current and former James Madison High school football players will meet with school administrators Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The crash happened at around 3:45 p.m., shutting down lanes between Van Dorn Street and the Springfield exchange near the southbound Interstate 95 exit for several hours as police worked the scene. The roadway reopened at around 8 p.m.

Given that choice, sure it's better. The boat is behind you...won't kill you so what do you care. And the worst you get around here for doing dumb shit that kills someone on the highway - is a ticket. And insurance would probably cover the boat. Rolling the dice on that is better than being dead.

Very sad - maybe others can be saved by taking this as a lesson. Unless you have no other choice always get off the highway to stop. If that is not possible get off to the right and pull as far over as possible. People these days wonder all over the road, across lines and onto the medians. I notice more and more serious accidents around NOVA, invariably involving poor driving by the occupant of a white panel truck or box truck or van. On investigation, the white work truck is driven by you know who.

Maybe Carlos needs his vision checked. You would think even one's peripheral vision would allow one to see a boat and a pickup truck sitting there.

The boat was white which is a more noticeable color (white and yellow cars are involved in less traffic accidents due to their visibility rating)

Looks like the damage was to the left front of the box truck, the left rear of the boat.... and the left front of the pickup.

How did that happen?

@ Accident reconstruction,

I thought this too at first glance, but if you look carefully. The door of the boxtruck was open in the picture and there is damage to the "head on" front of the box truck.

Perhaps Carlos slammed head on into the boat causing it to buckle to the right on the trailer hitch and forward momentum carried his truck into Coach and his nephew on the driver's side of the pickup.

We do not see a picture of the Box truck's passenger side .. but it looks like box truck's passenger side damage is what killed Coach, injured nephew and caused side damage to front driver's side bumper of pickup.

RIP Coach.

i assume you mean the box truck driver. and i assume he's not dead and there's no way possible to tell if he is.

believe 1/2 of what you see none of what you hear: none of us are familiar enough with this illegal to know if he ever legally existed, so showing a photo of him dead would prove nothing

That's just painted pavement between the I-95 South and I-495 West lanes. NEVER stop on that! It's the boat's fault, not the illegal's. The boat guy was a moron for stopping there.
