Fairfax county teachers need more money.
Posted by: social studies ()
Date: June 24, 2017 08:16AM

The citizens of Fairfax county clearly don't care about education so there is no reason for the teachers to care either. As we watch Prince William schools get better each year our schools will continue to decline. These idiot citizens who voted against the meals tax deserve what they get. We will work to the rule or less! Give the teachers more money or prepare to get fucked.

"Or prepare to get fucked".
Do u use that same dirty mouth in the classroom? You must be a good SJW globalist cuck who thinks the legal taxpayers need to continue to subsidize all the illegal, illiterate, food stamp suckers the county has been dealing with for over 2 decades now. I tell you what, cooperate with ICE, tell the board of supervisors to stop building housing projects like the one next to Fairfax corner, and then there will be money in the budget for raises...

Agreed. Why don't we address the giant elephant in the room, or maybe the giant piñata would be more appropriate...
Illegals from El Salvador and other Latin American countries have been flooding the ffx
county public schools like it's the LA unified school district.
Hence, more kids on the free meal plan, more illiterates, more ESL teachers needed, larger class sizes, more ms-13 gang violence, the list goes on and on...
But I know, I know, the real threat to fcps are all those hell's angels recruiting our youth into their outlaw gang (sarcasm)...

You say that PWC schools are getting better each year. Prince William also has one of the lowest per pupil spending in the DC area. They are also facing the same demographic challenges that affect Fairfax. This all suggests it isn't just a matter of how much you spend. It is also matters how you spend it.

You are completely wrong as usual.
The undocumented Americans that give birth to children on US soil are giving birth to legal citizens in most cases. Yes we feed them and educate them and in most cases they grow up to be productive members of society who pay taxes. We are making an investment in the future when we educate these children and the profits are tremendous!

Profits are tremendous? Ha. Keep it up looney toon, this is why Trump won. People are tired of your globalist, borderless society that demands legal Americans foot the bill for everyone else...
Every great teacher or prospective teacher should just pass on fcps...

It's hard to feel bad for you dude. Most of us get 2 or 3 weeks a year and 6 or 7 paid holidays. You get a week at Christmas and a week at Easter don't you? Thats 11 weeks off right there!

Nearly half of all beginning teachers will leave their classrooms within five years, only to be replaced by another fresh-faced educator so who cares....

Teachers leave for the most part because of the school building leadership. To improve the quality of teaching the county officials needs to improve the quality of the teaching job by allowing teachers to do their jobs without interference from some of these crazy school principals.

I am leaving the county schools because my new supervisor has been allowed to bully and harass staff. This school already is experiencing a high turnover so it is not always about the money.

FCPS will continue to high turnover because of principals that don't really know how to manage teachers by supporting them while they are delivering instruction. What a shame! Don't go to the Employee Relations Office because they are no help. All they do at Gatehouse is support the Principals.

More money is the answer?? FCPS is huge and there is no incentive for this public entity to spend money wisely. All public bureaucracies need check and balances to control spending. Look at municipalities in IL and CA as examples where public school system budgets went out of control and bankrupted the cities.

Sorry no meals tax for you. If the meals tax proposal was tied to more effective public school spending it might have passed. Just giving the FCPS system more money is NOT the answer. Spend your money wisely.

Not exactly. The major issue is not the anchor babies. The school system has been flooded for the last few years with thousands of illegal minors mostly from El Salvador. Many of them arrive unable to read and write in Spanish, let alone English. They do not care about education and simply show up to school to be with their friends and get away from the depressing home environments they live in -- and the free breakfast, lunch, and after-school snack is a bonus for them. They are rude and disruptive, shouting at each other across the classroom, listening to music on their phones, yelling obscenities at each other and the teachers, and generally have little to no interest in learning. Interestingly after the election last November, ESL teachers reported a sharp drop from what had been new students arriving every week in previous years.

To the original point, classroom teachers do need and deserve higher pay, but giving money to the school system is not the answer. The school system has a bloated bureaucracy of highly-paid people who never enter the classroom, excessive spending on outside consultants, and huge unnecessary travel expenses.

No meals tax.

"Only nine weeks" You would not last a day in the private sector where results matter. Imagine going to an interview and you demand the summer off, all holidays, a week at Christmas and Easter. To top it off you cannot show up if it snows.

I was somewhat surprised of the measures that were taken by the FCPS given the tight 2018 budget. The measures that Elizabeth Schultz was seeking were reasonable considering it would have saved teacher jobs and kept the class sizes at approximately the same size. However, the School Board once again proudly displayed their priorities by requiring AP test fees, refused to cut funds from ESOL and refused the cutting of additional administrative jobs. It just shows that they have their priorities and your kids may not land in their top three choices.

Here's a wild and crazy idea, why don't people who are concerned with educating our kids run for the school board? All we have now are a bunch of SJW's who are more concerned with the bloated buracracy staying bloated. Get some solid candidates who won't waste money and who won't be on a political/ideological power trip...

MOST teachers are overpaid babysitters.

- 6.75 hour work days
- Summers off
- Snow days off
- Winter break (2 weeks)
- Spring break

Hey stupid you pay the meals tax in all the surrounding counties and cities and yet say "fuck the meals tax" in FFC. You're a special kind of stupid aren't you now?

And you are foolish enough to believe this new revenue source will satisfy Fairfax's quest for more and more revenue to waste.

Go spend a day at one of the schools with a high number of illegal kids from El Salvador, like Key MS or Lee HS. I would not take a teaching job there for $150,000. The kids have no idea how to behave in a civil manner. They are rude, have no respect for teachers, constantly talk to each other across the classroom while the teacher is trying to teach, curse at teachers in Spanish, and worse.
Most of the teachers there don't last longer than a year or two.

Having 7 or 8 weeks of summer vacation is nice, but many private employers do offer the similar time off. I currently get 4 weeks of vacation and 2 weeks of personal time, and after another 1.5 years will get another week of vacation.

However the meals tax is not the solution for low teacher pay. FCPS wastes too much money already on unnecessary outside consultants, and they have large numbers of administrators who never set foot in a classroom yet make 2 and 3 times the salaries of actual classroom teachers. There too much fat in the FCPS budget and handing them more money will only encourage more wasteful spending.

We have to pay for the free breakfasts and lunches for the illegal kids because they would be even worse on empty stomachs. The solution is to not allow them to stay here illegally to begin with.

That makes about as much sense as telling someone "People yell at you all day at work, so why are you complaining about them yelling at you at home."

However let's run with your argument: DC does not impose a sales tax on meals sold at restaurants. Alexandria does not impose an add on tax for commercial real estate. Arlington imposes a lower real estate tax on residential properties. Some areas do not have stormwater fee add-ons to the real estate tax. So why shouldn't Fairfax follow suit? The answer is that each jurisdiction should find the balance that works best for it.

It is easy to yell "WRONG" whenever someone says something you disagree with. It is another to be able to back it up when the time comes to show your cards.

The argument that "Prince William schools get better each year" came from your fellow traveler, the OP. If you have an issue with that statement, take it up with the OP. My information can be confirmed from 1) the WABE fiscal year reports, 2) Fairfax County School profiles, 3) Washington Post articles and 4) the Prince William County budget report. They show: 1) Fairfax County School System spends one third more per pupil to educate students than Prince William; 2) Both Fairfax and Prince William County are facing rising numbers of students; 3) Both Fairfax and Prince William have significant percentages of English Learners, Economically Disadvantages students and Special Needs students. As I recall Prince William has a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged and Fairfax a higher percentage or RECONGNIZED special needs students.

Four school systems in this area spend significantly more per student than Fairfax. Of those Arlington and Falls Church have school systems that are recognized as better than Fairfax, while Alexandria and the most expensive DC are considered worse. While Fairfax has been claiming that school spending needs to be increased, in neighboring Arlington there is a movement to try and reduce school spending to Fairfax County levels.

You say you are 22151 teacher. If so I imagine you are familiar with Braddock, Annandale Terrace, Weyenoke and Lynbrook just across the Beltway. These are schools with teacher/specialist/aid to student ratios approaching or even below 1:10. That is a number that private schools would be crowing about. However school performance does not reflect those numbers, even factoring in school demographics. Most students do well in education environments where the material is sufficiently challenging to stimulate their learning, but is not so challenging that it overwhelms the student. When you have classrooms filled with students with a wide array of abilities you are going to end up with too many students who are either bored much of the time or overwhelmed. Then when you are constantly pulling kids out of classrooms for time with specialists they miss material that the teachers were covering, or the teacher bores the rest of the class by going over the same material more than once to make certain all students were there. You can say to teachers that you need to work harder and tell adequately performing kids you need to learn to be bored, or you can reallocate resources so that each kid is getting what he or she needs in classrooms generally filled with kids of the same abilities and needs. I realize under IDEA and similar rules there are limits to how far this can be carried, but it can be done far more than it is.

My cards are on the table. Let's see yours.

Nice presentation. Reflects the points that have been made for the past 3 years by many people.

There are multiple problems at FCPS that the School Board does not want to address. The layered retirement system is something that new teachers do not consider pay and do not really want it because they want to move on to the promise land of MoCo, MD which is a system that is taking on water rather quickly as well.

Fairfax county is in the middle of a suburban to urban transformation. The schools are in a state of decline because of this but this is normal. No need to get all worked up about it, just a natural progression of things.

How long have we been hearing the same old song about teachers leaving in droves? Try working in Alexandria where half the student body lives in DC or MD

I do believe that this is a subtle, yet very racist statement!

This is sad but true statement. The bottom line is Fairfax County continues to allow the construction of more apartment buildings and multi-unit dwellings, and 7 day a week bus services to name a few. Couple that with rising crime in all Fairfax districts, it is an undeniable fact that ffx is changing from suburban to urban; obviously not Manhattan urban, but certainly more urban like queens and Brooklyn...
I'm not sure how that statement has anything to do with race, those are cold hard facts.it's fact that crime is up in ffx, it's fact that the county constructed "low income" apartments next to Fairfax corner, it's fact that congestion continues to get worse by the year. You can argue the reasons why all these things have happened, but u can't deny they are happening...

I have no idea what is stupid about it. There are many points that either need to be considered or refuted as being impractical. I am very interested in learning more about what is said and may look into them as well.

Most of you whiners couldn't stand to spend all day locked up with your own brats. Now multiply your progeny x thirty. See, See? Being locked up a few hours with other people's kids is a chore. It sucks. You parents suck. I do it for the time off. If I had to work 12 months a year I would rather clean the back of garbage trucks or castrate raging bulls for a living.

It's actually much worse. The kids who have recently arrived from El Salvador have no conception of how to behave in class. They talk and yell at one another from one side of the room to the other, in Spanish. They curse at each other and the teachers. The boys leer and flirt with the girls, and the girls become little hoochie mamas. The small number of Central American kids who want to learn are stymied by the disruptive behavior of the majority.

Many of these kids are not even literate in Spanish. They are hopelessly behind and have no ambition to learn or succeed academically.

Teachers have to endure all this and still try to teach. They also have to avoid worry about MS-13.

The raise is only about $2k per year, and the starting salary is so low that even with a Masters Degree teachers are still underpaid. Any teacher who has worked long enough to get retirement benefits has earned them the hard way. Classrooms are hell -- it's not like it was 40 or even 20 years ago.

If FCPS eliminated about 20 or 30 of those $100k+ non-teaching administrative jobs, and cut or eliminated spending for outside curriculum consultants, teachers could get a nice raise.

Illegals only pay a FRACTION of the cost to educate their litters. How is it fair for a US citizen to pay thousands in property taxes that fund education and illegals to pay almost nothing for the same education?

When was the last time you were inside those 3 townhouses? Lower income tenants do not have a very good history of taking care of property, especially when it is not their property.

Common misconception. Undocumented Hispanic Americans make some of the best tenants.

Why don't we compare apples to apples when deciding whether FCPS teachers are paid fairly....?

I suggest FCPS salaries be quoted in pay per hour versus annual salary. Once we see what the actual "butts in seats" (ie actual hours worked) hourly salary, Fairfax County taxpayers would be appalled at salaries.

I work in private industry and don't get weeks off at Christmas, spring break, summers off, sick days, teachers days, inordinate amount of holidays, half days, late days, etc ad nauseum....and that's not even mentioning a pension.

Time to shine the light of reality on what county employees really are compensated.

I will never understand why the people I pay with hard earned tax dollars have much better pay and benefits than I have in private sector... and then to hear whining.

FCPS is now no longer even considered the best school district in Virginia (Arlington County is). When I was in school Fairfax and Montgomery County were always slugging it out for the top spot in the nation. Now, Fairfax is out of the top 25 and Montgomery County isn't even in the to 50 school districts anymore. But yeah, let's pay the teachers/leechers more money. I don't give a shit. I'm retiring in 3 years and this shithole will be a distant memory in my review mirror 1 day after that.

The schools, the roads, unchecked building with no master plan, demographics, corporations moving out and Democrats. This County is on the decline, flush!.

I know for your small brain it is hard to understand but teachers are NOT paid for the summer months they are LAID OFF nor are they paid for CHRISTMAS and other holidays ...
they contract for a certain number of days period...usually 193.

We need to bring back public flogging for idiots who decide to revive dead posts with meaningless drivel.

I’d pay teachers double to deal with my kids and yours. It’s a terrible job and we should be thankful anyone will do it anymore.

I will say I’m not giving McElveen one more dime because he/they can’t manage what they have. Lawsuits eat up money and so does all the insane and stupid initiatives this board plays with. Enough.

If that bothers you so much I will try to do it everyday.

I retired from FCPS close to 20 years ago and then was able to transition into working in government contracting for another 15.

I have to laugh at those who talk about all the time off teachers get. First, I worked some sort of summer job every year I was a teacher to supplement my income. In addition there were many summers I needed to take classes to maintain my teaching certification or add to it.

I'll say this, there wasn't a day that I didn't, at some point, think to myself how much easier it was working in a gov office than it was being a teacher. I worked in a number of gov agencies, GSA, VA, DoD, ED. Of course there were frustrations, as in any job, but nothing like the demands of being a classroom teacher!

Teachers are woefully underpaid for what they have to do on a daily basis.

The problem with teachers pay is that just about anyone can be a teacher. There's no special skills or abilities needed to teach. The lesson plans are fed to you. The tests and fed to you. The teaching materials are fed to you. All you have to do is show up and follow the plan they give you.

Try being in the construction business. Most of these workers have broken down joints and muscles by the time they're 40 years old. They work in the freezing cold and searing heat. They have no guarantee what jobs they'll be working from one year to the next. Those are the people that are woefully underpaid for what they have to do.

Or try being a hospital nurse. They work in an environment of 24/7/365 service. They clean up after patients. They help them eat, poop, walk. They are often there when the die and the last people many patients see before they pass on. They are horribly paid compared to the specialists in their industry.

Teachers work 9½ months a year. Have off 20 days during the 9½ months that they do work. Get vacation and sick leave on top of that. Almost never work more than 8 hours total in the school - usually with one period off for 'planning'. Get to dress like bums most of the time while teaching.

Teaching is a shitty job. But they don't need to be making more than cops, nurses, journeymen construction workers or the hundreds of other jobs that are also shitty.

What pisses me off is that in most cases the FCPS plumbers and HVAC guys get paid more than we do. We have college degrees and they do not!

We either need more money or smaller class sizes (both would be ideal). Otherwise the quality will continue to fall.

We need kids who can speak English. I am tired of hearing about low SOL scores. It is very difficult to teach all these kids that only know a few English words. One of my college friends teaches in Fauquier and she has no such problem because 98% of her students speak English.

Great teachers certainly have special abilities/skills. They are able to build relationships, motivate the unmotivated, and inspire their students. They Make up about 1/5 of the teacher population but they are worth their weight in gold. The problem with teacher pay is they are paid strictly off of years of experience. The bottom 20% of teachers don’t deserve the pay they receive now, but the top 20% should make much more. If we continue don’t continue to make teaching a more attractive position we will be left with nothing but the bottom 20%. Those top teachers ya e the skills to be successful elsewhere and our kids will suffer.

I heard superintendent speak about the new budget...and liked what he said about raising pay more for mid level teachers vs ones who have been on the dole for years.

You want to see blatant taxpayer fund abuse at FCPS...? Check out salaries of Career & Technical teachers who come into the FCPS from outside industry to very high steps...they should not be paid more than the mainstream content teachers as they have not worked their way up the steps on lower end of salary. They are making more for 9 months of partial work compared to 12 months full time work in their industry... plus many are teaching 18 year olds and above. Someone needs to address this teacher inequity.

The US spends more money per student than any other country in the world. We rank in the middle of the pack in STEM testing and basic reading and writing. The US has seen a steady decline in our testing scores since the foundation of the Dept. of Education. It's not the money being spent. It's the approach to teaching that's being used and the massive influx of non-english speaking students who have to be taught the basics up until 6th or 7th grade when students used to be taught much more advanced things at that stage of their journey through K-12.

Class size is a valid concern. Non-english speakers should be segregated out into a full-immersion program until they become assimilated and then put back into the general population (probably by 3rd grade). Vocational school programs should be encouraged, funded and expanded. That's where additional money should go. Not more money for teachers, but additional classrooms that provide students with a lot of paths to earning a living and learning basic skills and knowledge to be a productive American.

When I first started this maybe 10-12 years ago I assumed that parents wanted their kids to learn and that parents of non-English speaking students wanted their kids to become fluent in English. I have learned though that I was wrong about this, as an article in today's Post demonstrates. Many parents would be happy if the County provided their kids with thirteen years of babysitting at the end of which their kids were handed a certificate of completion. A large number of foreign born parents don't care if their kids learn English well enough to be educated with their English speaking peers. We are selling a product that increasing numbers of parents, not just students, have no desire to buy. We are beating up our teachers and administrators for things which are actually the Fault (yes that is the correct word) of the students and their parents. Continuing this effort is just sucking more and more resources away from the students who want to learn, or who have parents who still give a crap about their kids eduction. The time has come to reorient the County's educational philosophy.

Vouchers are the answer. Let those that use it pay for it. I have my kid is in a private school then I should get a taxbreak. If enough people vote with their feet then no more issues. The public school system shuts down and every one is responsible for their own.

Taxes exist as a way for the COMMUNITY to pay for services deemed necessary by the community. Having a quality public school available to educate the children of this county is an example of one of those necessary services. PROVIDING YOUR KIDS THE EDUCATION YOU WANT FOR THEM IS NOT. That is the fundamental flaw in voucher logic.

The Virginia Constitution mandates that children/students of the Commonwealth have access to a free public education. If you don't like paying taxes to support our educational system then you have to start by amending the Virginia Constitution. Since I don't have kids in school I will be happy to see my taxes go down. The overall result though would be for the quality of education many children in Virginia receive to plummet below levels that black kids in Mississippi get. Employers here will have an even lower quality workforce than they currently have. And people from certain cultures which value and promote education will have an even greater advantage than they currently do. You don't like seeing TJHSST at 75% Asian. How will you feel when W&M, UVA and Tech are over 2/3 Asian?

The illegal leeches have screwed up the public schools beyond repair. Time to start over and defund the gravy train. That is the fundamental flaw in your logic. Cut off all funding for the leeches and make them self deport and build that wall strong and tall! I am really tired of my tax dollars supporting these ungrateful illegal leeches who have no right to be here in my country.
