FCPS Teachers Don't need a raise
Posted by: Tax payer 2 ()

Most teachers work 39 weeks a year. So no matter how you try to spin it, it is not, and never has been a full-time job. So 92,000 plus generous benefits generally not available in the private sector. And they are retiring younger than you are with a better pension. If you consider the total tax burden - income, sales, property, personal property, gas taxes, taxes disguised as fees on utility bills, sorry, we are not undertaxed. But that's how government entities operate. No matter how much they have, it is never, ever enough.

What teacher makes $92,000 a year?

This "PE" TEACHER AT A HIGH School in fcps. None of them need a raise. They only work for like 9 months, and last month = Movie month.

Please find a friend that is a teacher and talk to them about this. I think you would benefit from hearing their perspective. Bonus points if you talk to a teacher that is the main bread winner for their family, has a masters, and works at a low income school.

Everyone likes to complain about the teachers that are making $90,000+, but they don't realize that for every one of them there are probably three teachers that are making $55,000 or less. Teachers are overpaid their last 7-8 years on the job, but they are underpaid for the first 7-8 years. The good news for taxpayers is that most teachers don't reach the upper levels of the pay scale due to burnout or switching districts, which saves us money. The perfect pay scale would start teachers out at around $65,000 and then max them out at $80,000. Thier retirements would be lower, but they would have more money available in their younger years to pay childcare and buy a home and if they manage their money correctly they probably end up in a better financial situation. Problem is that this would probably cost us more. Someone would need to do the math.

I teach private school in Alexandria and make less than 50k. My husband teaches private in dc making less than 40k. Needless to say, we are broke as a joke living in Annandale. I hear the fcps teachers make 70s. Teaching is a very difficult, demanding job. I get 7 weeks off to recover from grueling workweeks and often work late weeknights and weekends during the school year. It's not for the faint of heart!! Sending love to all the teachers. But, man...I would love to make furrent fcps pay. On the flip side, lot of b.s. to put up with when the government runs your classroom.

The choices you make ... you have smaller class sizes, significantly fewer disciplinary issues, fewer IEP/ ELL students ... and you don;t need a master's degree. If you have one, FCPS will gladly take you.

While most teachers work about 10 months per year, the workload is pretty insane. You take home hours of work every day and typically lose an entire weekend day doing paperwork. The evaluation process can be pretty grueling if you have an out of touch administrator which is pretty common. You also contribute heavily to your own pension to the tune of thousands of dollars a year (about 5k this year for me). Teaching has uprooted most facets of my life and placed them on the back burner like many other people. Now the assistants- they have a tough road!

FCPS needs to do a better job budgeting. Remember when they changed school times a couple of years ago? The cost of that was in the millions.

Teachers are hot and love to get banged deep and hard. Who cares how much they get paid as long as they keep giving up the snatch.

"FCPS needs to do a better job budgeting."

>4000 unaccompanied minors placed into FCPS sponsor families, at > 15k a pop to educate, probably more as most don't speak English, and you come up with the shortfall budget amount.

These kids placed here don't bring new taxpayers.

A border wall would take care of the FCPS budget problems. And keep kids from being murdered by illegals and being trafficked.

I'm pretty certain most engineers, accountants, doctors, lawyers etc aren't working 9-5 either...

As for salary, they should get more pay if they're being hired away by surrounding juristictions, but there seems to be too man admins at FCPS. Its about a .72 admin/teacher ratio per the budget.

Teachers in Fairfax County earn every penny and deserve more. I'm a small government conservative, but this is a public service where I would definitely spend more. It doesn't require a meals tax. I've worked closely with our schools for nearly two decades and I've seen the many worthless programs this county funds - like immersion that serves too few kids countywide - or the renaming of a high school for a proposed $1 million. Put that money to the teachers. They work very hard and for the most part are incredibly dedicated to their students and parents.

Teachers are not leaving because of pay. They leave because of the work environments and who they work for..... The taxpayers want the county leaders to spend the money more wisely.

I have been teaching 4 years now and still make under 54k. My older brother is an electrician for FCPS and he makes 85k with no college degree!
This is why most FCPS teachers do the bare minimum.

People are really getting sick of fcps political and ideological agenda that has been pushed hard over the last ten years or so. Maybe non-SJW's would be more sympathetic to the plight of teachers in fcps if they would stop ramming their radical leftist ideology down the students throats...
I know not every teacher is a Bernie commie, but their voices are dominating way too many classrooms...
All taxpayers contribute to teachers salaries; liberals, conservatives, and nonpolitical people as well. Stop with the indoctrination fcps...

FCPS has plenty of money to pay teachers more. They could cut some of the non-teaching administrators that make huge salaries, and quit paying outside consultants who have dubious value.

Eliminate all the Educational Specialists and Educational Coach positions. What a waste of money. Eliminate 11-12 month contracts. Put all those Administrators and Coordinators in the classrooms to work with students at least once a week and start earning their big salaries.

This is outrageous! All these highly paid do nothing cronies walking around thinking they're important. Eliminate them all - not one student would suffer and it would save us taxpayers millions.

And know they do nothing because .....??? FCPS has thousands of employees teaching and working with over 180, 000 kids. Name me a company with thousands of employees without any infrastructure or leadership. Unless you have shadowed these individuals or actually held these jobs to know what they do or don;t do, shut the fuck up.

Give people a steady paycheck and a job title and they will make themselves look busy in order to preserve their status. Whatever it is these people are doing, most of them are not teaching kids and not facilitating the teachers' jobs in any detectable way.

Certainly FCPS needs a few finance, payroll, HR, transportation, and buildings facilities people. However there is a lot of fat and those operations could run on half as many people. All the "Chief of Staff..." and the titles starting with "Chief..." are indicative of an overpaid bloated bureaucracy.

Moreover, numerous job areas could be eliminated entirely. All the "Region x...", "Special Svcs...", "Instr Svcs-PreK-12", "Region x-Executive Principal", and the like could go away and never be missed by any teachers or students.

I bet each of the five "Region Executive Principals" makes more than the $55k of a teacher yet no one would ever miss them if the jobs were eliminated.

Eliminate 60% to 75% of those bloated administrative overhead jobs and give the teachers a pay raise.

You have to be intelligent and highly skilled to be a licensed electrician. I bet he is a 12 month employee too and has to respond to after hours emergencies. 85k is cheap for a guy like that. Teachers just follow a lesson plan, same shit every year and no brains are needed.

The FCPS bloated bureaucracy is far more fact than a myth. For instance, view one of the School Board's working groups where input is needed by Gate House. These meetings involve a single person providing testimony, however, it is a standing room only event because of the extras. It reminds me of a meeting with the Federal Government where you are the outside party walking in alone for a meeting and are met by 10 or 12 experts providing support to the only person that should be attending the meeting.
