Do not say "YES" automatically when a local number calls
Posted by: Latest area scam ()
Date: June 19, 2017 04:44PM

There is a new scam that has hit the area where they ask you a bunch of questions that you have to say "YES" to, then they use the "YES" that they recorded in your voice and at your number to extract money from you in some way for scammed merchandise, all sorts of things.

One phone number now operating in this Northern Virginia area in this manner is 571-316-1053. They pretend to be a "poll" or "survey" for cover.

Better yet, if you don't recognize the number, don't answer it. Let the VM get it. Just make sure you don't have your number on your VM.

What's wrong with having your number on your voicemail?

All of the spam calls I get these days are 571/703, with all the tech we have it's super easy to spoof any number.

And they try to spoof one close to yours. So if you have 703-232-XXXX they will call you showing 703-232-YYYY just to pique your interest.

This stupid horseshit was on the news last year and is completely bogus. The news was duped into reporting on it. It seems that no one has critical thinking skills anymore.

What is one single example of someone being recorded just saying "yes" and some how magically losing money? Dumbest shit I have ever heard.

Funniest are the ones who spoof YOUR number. So you know before you pick up that there's zero chance it's legit. Some of them get quite shirty when I, um, speak to them in an appropriate manner.

So, one guy I know, who saw the report a year ago,
has NOW begun to refuse to answer "yes" to emails & texts.

What the F***?!?

It's bad enough that he sent a gazillion texts warning
friends & family of the stupid news story.

What's worse than that: it's my husband-in-law!!

Let's assume this is true. So now the scammers have a recording of you saying "Yes." To sign you up for something, they call some service and play back the "Yes." The computer at the other end does voice print analysis to verify it is you saying "Yes." Oh wait... Hold on a second, does that technology even exist? Where is the central voice print database maintained by the CIA/FBI/NSA? Or does the computer at the other end just care if someone says "Yes."

I have been having alot of spam calls from 703-971-xxxx...the last digits vary.

read where scammers will call using the area numbers where you live to make you think it is very local call.

How about the one with the giggly young girl who always says she's having trouble with her headset? Last time she called, I said "Don't they have Radio Shack stores in your part of India?" and I hung up on her.

Another one is the breast cancer rip off who always says "We've been trying so hard to reach you!" My response was, "Keep trying" and I hung up.

One "Computer Services" spammer pissed me off so much that I told him to take his spam somewhere else. After I hung up on him, he actually call back to ask why I was so angry! I politely told him to go fuck himself before hanging up on him.

Currently, watch out for a phone scammer with a "Russel KY", area cod 606 number.

Yes, the scammers are dipshits. But so are those of you who are wasting time and effort posting numbers.

See, the scammers have these things called "computers". If they're calling 703-987-6543, they pick 4 random digits and fake CallerID of 703-987-xxxx. And the next call, they use a *different* 4 random digits. So there's no point in even blocking the numbers.

Scammers who fake numbers in other area codes are often worth blocking, especially if you can use one of the crowdsourced blockers like NoMoRobo or TrueCaller (and there are lots more, those are just two that come to mind).

The way CallerID works is that the name part is filled in by the local switch. So a call from Assfuckistan that fakes 703-987-1234 does a lookup in the local switch here in Virginia, which is more likely to have current information about that number. If that lookup fails (busy database, network congestion, whatever), it just fills in the address of the exchange. That's why some numbers show up as VIENNA VA sometimes, even when it's a long-standing number.

Thus endeth the lesson.

Have some fun--get a robodialer and program it with all the robocaller numbers that come in on your personal phone. Have it dial them round robin all day and all night, 24 hours a day.

Heres a number to start with, an illegal scammer operating out of Northern Va area:

703-423-6738

That's not how it works.
That's not how ANY of this works!

The person calling you is NOT calling from that number you see.
They stole that number, only for making outgoing calls.
It is called "spoofing".
If you try to dial them back, you won't get them.
Either there is nobody at that number (invalid number),
or else it's some random schmuck like you, who had nothing to do with it.
Usually it is a cell phone number; I think they are easier to spoof.

They like to use a number in the same NPANXX as your own number,
so you think it's a local call. They are not actually calling
from that number -- they just make the stolen number appear on your end.

Don't harass the poor loser at the other end of that number.
It's not the spammer.

I do wish there was a good way to trace the actual number they are using.
Then we could track down where the calls are coming from.
Then we could go over there, shoot them dead, and torch the place.
And collect info on who their bosses were.
And then go kill their families and post it on the Internet.
That's the only way to discourage people like that.
