First for the cop in the trunk story. Greenbriar was the first major development
in Greenbelt since the end of WWII and it was a very quiet place to live.
The sense of "community" was very strong. The Police were not used to a lot of
serious crime. One night a cop responded to a burglar alarm at Jaspers at 3:00
a.m. after it was closed. When he walked around the building, some nutcase
jumped out of a door and knocked the cop down, took his gun, and put him in the
trunk of the cruiser (handcuffed with his own gear) To really rub salt into the
wound, he left him there. He (the cop) hadnt notified the dispatcher as to his
whereabouts and had remembered a problem with the same alarm going off on its
own a couple of days earlier due to a wiring problem. Well, nobody knew
where he was and the other cops began looking all over the city but didnt find
him until around 8 a.m. when someone finally spotted the cruiser behind Jaspers.
They never found the burglar and I don't know if the gun was ever retrieved.
