A Fairfax County General District Court judge has been removed from all drunken-driving cases after he was cited with driving under the influence in Maryland in April, a court official said.
Judge Michael H. Cantrell, who has been on the bench for less than a year, was stopped in Calvert County on April 28, according to Maryland court records.
General District Court Chief Judge Michael Joseph Cassidy said Cantrell was removed from drunken-driving cases on May 10.
Cantrell did not immediately return a call for comment, and his attorney declined to comment on the case.
Cantrell has practiced law since 1989 and became a General District Court judge last July. He is scheduled to go to trial on the charge on Aug. 16.

Cantrell graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. He received his bachelor's of social work from James Madison University and was subsequently employed by the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court for 10 years. He received his law degree from the George Mason University School of Law in 1988. He has been in private practice as a sole practitioner since January 1989.

You do not have to meet many judges before discovering that looks have little to do with whether someone gets appointed judge. Being friends the right people can help. Judges are appointed by the legislature. In Fairfax the recommendation process has two steps. The Committee makes its recommendations which can be Not Qualified, Qualified, Recommended or Highly Recommended. Then the members of the Fairfax Bar will vote endorsed, not endorsed or no opinion. These results are passed on to the legislature for consideration in choosing judges. Sometimes the legislature will follow the local bar association recommendations. Sometimes the legislature will go with someone else.
These were the attorneys who sought the last two vacancies in the General District Court. In this instance Cantrell and Stoney were appointed. Both had previously served as substitute judges, so they already had on the job experience.

Apparently he was not removed from all DWI cases as I was charged for DWI for having key in ignition of my vehicle at amtrak autotrain parking lot and i wasted a trip from key west to fairfax where i was on the docket for May 24th xourt date that didnt occure because xourt wasnt aware the police officer was on paternity leave and was rescheduled for August 8th at 2pm and have now wasted another trip to appear on his docket and am now after 2 trips...scheduled to appear infront of a different judge on 1October 10th. Fairfax needs to get thier act together.

The entire Fairfax County Judicial system is corrupt...including 99% of the county police. Money talks in this county...not right and wrong! Would love to see this guy in the slammer as well as a few other garbage judges, shady ass lawyers who rip off people’s hard earned money and the worthless police who have nothing better in the county but to hand out citations on drunk on public’s for looking wrong and a few day expired car inspection certificates. This county is a joke! The judges are even a bigger joke. I wish and pray that karma comes to many of them for what they do to citizens of this county. The circuit court nudges are the biggest jokes...it would be great to see the same things happen to them as what they hand out to others...would teAch them a lesson on over abused power and how they promote dysfunctional behavior in today’s society.
