Great picture. I miss the days when we would explore a place like that all day long. Walking through the water barefoot, turning over a rock or two to look for crayfish.
Thanks for contributing to this thread.

Elk lick is in Western Fairfax County, this section of the stream appears to be the area behind Chandley Farms just prior to where Elk Lick flows into Cub Run behind Chantilly National Golf Club, can also be accessed from Pleasant Valley Road just South of Cox's Farm

Cool snapper. They're nasty when they grow to full size.

A Polyphemus Moth that somehow wound up inside my neighbor's house about 13 or 14 years ago. They didn't know what it was, and called me on the phone to see if I wanted it. The thing was pretty big for a moth.
These were both taken with an older film camera. For the first picture, it was kind of hard to hold the moth on my one hand, and focus and take the picture with the other hand. (It wasn't an auto-focus).
He willingly walked onto my hand, and just sat there. He didn't try to fly away. I had to almost push him off onto the Rhododendron bush in the second picture.

Taken almost 10 years ago in Arlington National Cemetery.
A pair of Red Tailed Hawks were building a nest in a tree not too far from my parent's grave. I saw them flying back and forth, carrying things to it. I got closer, sat under a tree and waited. Finally this one flew off, and I was able to get this shot.
I can't help but notice how much it looks like the logo for The Doobie Brothers, just in reverse. Haha.

OK, I'll scrounge this thread up again.
I took this while sitting on a rock on the side of the Potomac.
He was about 50 to 75 yards out in the middle of the river. Thankfully I had my 400mm lens with me.
Believe it or not, it's called a Bufflehead. I don't make this stuff up. (Well, sometimes I do, but not this time.)
Taken on Christmas Day a few years ago.

A Red Tailed Hawk that apparently had been injured, and was in a cage at Riverbend Park. It was easy to get a good close-up, since the guy was in a cage. Finally, he was healed enough to be set free.

Thank you for the encouragement. It means a lot. I guess when you let part of your yard go wild, the animals appreciate it. And I have learned to keep my camera close by for some of the times when critters stop by.
Unfortunately I couldn't get a good shot of the 6 point buck that walked past the window yesterday morning.
But I do have this older picture from about 9 years ago of a Raccoon cleaning out my bird feeder. It's officially called a "Squirrel Proof Bird Feeder", but it never said anything about Raccoons. The thing was able to open the top all the way, climb inside, and feed to his, (or her's), heart's content.
I could have reached out an petted him, (or her), but didn't think it was such a wise thing to do.
I don't use that feeder anymore, it got too expensive. LOL

Just a caterpillar that I saw climbing on a Goldenrod plant growing by the side of my house.
There was a white post next to it, and I thought that the contrast would look good.
I'm not a good photographer, I just try to be aware of my surroundings.
If I can do it, you all can too.

Opheodrys aestivus is a Rough Green Snake.

Here's a one antlered Deer that was just in my backyard. He must have broken off the other one somehow. Maybe in a rut with another buck. It looks there is a wound that is healing below his eye.
He started out laying in the back corner of the yard by some bushes, and I was able to get some decent pictures of him. I was getting ready to post the first picture, when he decided to get up and started walking straight toward the house. He stopped about 15 feet outside the window and looked right at me when he heard the sound of the camera.
I had to shrink these 2 pictures down to about 30% of the full sized files so I didn't get yelled at. Haha

Nicdoot and Guest, thank you for the compliments. So many times with the pictures, I just get lucky.
That's one of the nice things about digital cameras, I don't have to worry about wasting film, like in the old days. I usually have the camera on Continuous Shoot, and snap a burst of 10 or 20 pictures at a time. A good part of them don't really come out so well, but I can usually get a couple decent ones. Then delete the rest.
I did have to prop the window open a little, then aim the camera through there, just so I didn't get distortion from the window, all the time the morning cold air pouring in.
I guess I could post a cropped version of the broken antler. This is from when he walked up toward the house, but was still looking away. Before he heard the sound of the camera clicking, and looked toward the sound (me). Full size, but cropped.

From South America , the Ospreys. Many others coming to, their fans have been waiting and are now watching them. These two stars of the NOVA wildlife show have returned to the same nest 8 years now in Fairfax County waters off the GW Parkway

Soon a few eggs will be laid and the pair will take turns sitting on them to keep them warm till hatching. Then the show goes on as the parents fly fish to them to feed on and finally the babies fledge and learn to fish for themselves

They will banish the Egrets and Herons from their fishing areas, but the mighty American Bald Eagle will swoop down at will and steal their fish from them.

There are some Eagles right across the Potomac and they soar over the area and will dive upon the Osprey with a scream and the Osprey will let their fish go to avoid an attack from the "Screaming Eagle" in the same manner that ISIS and other enemy's of America retreat when the 101st and 82nd US Army Airborne paratroopers jump into combat

The Osprey show ends in late August as they return to their South American winter grounds
