HAD the black antique tags on my 1986 fleetwood (yes it counts! 2017-25 years= 1996 so any car before that year counts!). I know, not a true antique, but a sweet big boat ride my son loves to ride in.

I got pulled over on average once a month, I was ONLY using it to tool around town on a sunday, usually with him in the car, purely pleasure (ok we stopped for ice cream so what!).

My antique tag was legit, I had full coverage insurance on the car, AND IT PASSED INSPECTION I HAD A STICKER EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT HAVE TO!

I got let go after a few minutes of them running my background assuming I had warrants or was a drug dealer threatening to search my car (it was a sweet pearl black with the ragtop and I put the dayton spokes on that were black and silver too! It did look kinda gangsta LOL) and once they found I have a clean record and a security clearance, they would let me go but WARN me if they saw me again they would arrest me (for what?)

After the hassle, I got it to pass emissions (just needed a new catalytic i was good to go!), put hard white tags on it, STILL got pulled over and harassed, so last year I sold the car.

Sad. Can't even enjoy a classic without Fairfax trying to stop you to find something wrong so they can write a ticket for it.

I have a couple classic cars with vintage plates and have never been pulled over, but I don't speed in those cars either.

If you drive your classic to work everyday, you need a regular tag on it.

Police checks do not show whether you have a security clearance.

Based on that fact alone, your story is FAQUE. 0 points.

No they do not, but I showed my government contractor badge when they asked where I worked.

Oh ya, I am WHITE. I can't enjoy cadillacs as well?

OP:

Thanks,

Figured leaving a bar I'd be an easy target the tags.

I'm all for playing by the rules. I have a 90 Firebird. My concern is the classic tags will be a reason to pull me over after a couple of beers

I have a '72 Gran Torino Sport. It used to carry vintage tags but, I was pulled over so much I finally swapped it for a set of regular tags. I still get pulled over from time to time...but only because the officer "just wanted to see my car."

Such a pain in the ass...

No more tickets then you've ever gotten for trolling people's math mistakes...

I have two vehicles with antique tags, both are real antiques that I only drive for pleasure. Never gotten pulled over but both vehicles are clearly classics.

If you are just some shithead trying to cheat the system with a POS you will get pulled over.

ANY car that is over 25 years old count (and the correct math is 1992 for this year).

So technically yes, that 1990 honda accord or that 1983 Plymouth Horizon or that 1989 Chevy Cavailer can get those tags... ANY car made before 1992 CAN get antique tags on it if the owner so chooses.

Just because it isn't nice enough to roll through the auction lanes at Barret-Jackson or Hemmings and command upper-5/low-6 figures doesn't mean it does not count. The law is the law.

"ANY car made before 1992 CAN get antique tags on it if the owner so chooses."

Correct, but you can't use it for general transportation. Just occasional pleasure driving, car shows, taking it to the garage for service, that sort of thing. And when you register it as an antique you have to provide proof that you own or have access to another vehicle to use as general transportation.

Yes the law is the law. But the law is open to interpretation. Is any given trip an "occasional pleasure drive" (allowed) or "general, daily transportation" (prohibited)? I have a few 1960s cars and a 70s car, all with antique tags, and have never been hassled for driving them. They are not show cars, but are not the 1990-vintage type cars that one might drive to beat the system, either. Keep in mind that you can be written up for daily driving anyway, and would have to convince a judge otherwise. You know how traffic court is... guilty until proven innocent. Or you could be written up for defective equipment if you have a broken reflector or something. Again, I've never had a problem, but I do have a "modern" car as a daily driver. I ride motorcycles to work and on the odd occasion have ridden an antique MC, with antique tags, to work. I've ridden right past police checkpoints onto Route 66 during HOV and they haven't had an issue with it. I figure that I'm not commuting if it isn't a "daily driver"... that it constitutes a "pleasure drive" to work. The law, apparently, agrees with me.

How are they every gonna know? The odometer on mine hasn't worked for years, so the cop'd have to say he's seen you day after day, and why would he bother?

That said, years now and never once stopped by a cop. Talked to a few who stopped to admire the car, but never stopped to question my tags.

SO basically you all agree with me-

So what it boils down to is this-

I can comply with the law, have that other vehicle for daily commutes, let's say I grew up learning to drive on a 1990 accord, decided i wanted another one to PLEASURE DRIVE, and will promptly be pulled over just because I decided to put antique tags on it and it is not a "showroom" car or a "true classic" like you all define. Even if it passed inspection and emissions, say I wanted the antique tags anyway because I VERY RARELY DROVE IT.

This is Bull shit. It seems like if i did so the police here will rush to pull me over- even though I am COMPLYING with the LAW- just because it does not meet the definition of a classic "in the policeman's eyes" and I have to go duke it out in court because of it.

I now understand 86 caddy's frustration mentioned above. Even if one is complying, just because one LOOKS LIKE they are out of order they will be harassed even if they are in the legal RIGHT.

Follow the money is all I will say on this.

ALL cars over 25 years old don't need emissions testing, whether they are antique tagged or not.
I have some antique cars in parts or in the process of long-term restoration, so it would be a burden to pay yearly registration fees for something that is not on the road or rarely on the road. Thus the need for antique tags with permanent registrations. Inspection is done by the owner, one who knows what the car needs to be safe better than state inspectors who are only versed in the requirements for modern cars.
As with abelard, no police have ever had a problem with my VA-issued antique tags. And I've never heard of someone having an antique with antique tags emissions or safety inspected.

I have antique plates on most my vehicles. Never gotten harassed in 5 years. I have other cars to drive, but they have regular plates.

Anyways, I do know a guy who often drove to the metro lot, parked, and took the subway. He was cited for improper use of (antique) tags. And his privilege was revoked.

Your mileage may vary.

I have known people who have been cited for improper use of antique plates. They were all stopped for another reason. Only guy I knew who was stopped had a Model A. Fortunately he was carrying a flyer for an upcoming show, so he told the officer he was testing it out before the show. Not sure whether the officer bought that or whether he was just wanting to check out the car.

One problem I have heard of is with insurance companies that don't want to insure if you drive an antique more than a certain number of miles.

To get vintage tags in VA you must list another car as your daily driver. I have two black tag cars and have never been pulled over. (both over 50 YO.) I drive them at least weekly depending on the weather. One, while registered as a VA car, sports the original french license plates. I have been followed by cops in that car with no reaction.

TL;DR

If you are white, drive what you want the cops won't bother you.

If you are a minority, watch out.

Did he try to fight it? The rules for usage of antique-tagged cars seem so vague, I'd love to hear how he violated them. Don't they say 'occasional use' and whatnot? Fuck does that even mean? How are they gonna prove you use it all the time?

I can think of one way - they may have asked your friend how often he drives it and he told them the truth. Which is why you never admit anything when talking to cops.

The VA antique and vintage license plates law says test driving, occasional drive or to and from a car show.

With the Antique tags you don't have to get inspected or carry full insurance.

Cops don't ask you where you work, and the last Cadillac convertible was the 1976 Eldorado.

I have. I was on a bike and the jerk in the classic, oh so classic and super shiny, not that one but the idiot 3 cars in front, would not I admit, refused to go around me on my bicycle. I got arrested for blocking traffic, classic cars made their was on down the road. I was on my way to a job interview. Needless to say, but I will type it here anyway, I was concerned about my bike. The nice person who arrested me made sure my bike was secured behind a tree. I spent the weekend in jail for obstructing vehicles. It was nonsense and the judges exact words to me as I left w/ no money spent for release, were, "We will cut you loose". I have almost no recollection of this incident. It happened so long ago that is is a very distant memory. I only know that it was after I got my training wheels off. I would wish you good luck, but I don't believe in it, so make your own decision on if your car (vehicle) is classic enough. The bike is long gone for me now. I have a unicycle but I have absolutely no experience in riding. It was in the trunk. It may still be there. How would I know? I haven't checked that trunk yet.I felt like and idiot carrying it around and people asking, "Can you ride that? Can you ride that?" Well, what do you think I said?
